Our Student Body Officers Fall, 1964 — Spring, 1965 Jackie Jew Fall President G. S. S. The Girl’s Service Society known on campus as the GSS, was started in the first year of the existence of George Washington High School. Charter members were five in number, and the purpose of their society was to pro- mote the high morale and general welfare of the school. Today the GSS has fifty mem- bers, but its purpose remains unchanged. By helping to keep order at rallies, helping to supervise clean-up on campus, and by per- forming other such acts of service, the GSS has become one of Washington’s greatest assets. GSS members are chosen upper division girls who have shown high qualities of service, scholarship, and citizenship. Being a GSS is both a privilege and the greatest honor that can be bestowed on any girl. The Student Body Officers gave much time and effort to make this term one of Washington’s greatest. The year started off with a bang, as the biannual Treasurer’s Rally, presented by the officers, told a suspenseful and funny story of the Roaring 20’s and Elliot Mess. Following this kick-off, began the Student Body Card Drive, in which 93% of the Student Body purchased membership in the United Students of George Washington High School. Soon the football season got under way, and Washington proved to be a champion in every respect. Not only did we have a championship team who retained the Bell and won on Turkey Day, but we had championship spirit as well. Thanks to much hard work and planning, our rooting section was one to be proud of. The L10 class of Fall, 1964, under the guidance of the 2nd Vice President, worked hard to make their first semester at Washington a successful one. Many new activities were instigated, including LlO Song Girls and an LlO Booster Day. There’s no doubt that, with the great start this class got, they will go on to accomplish much while attending Washington. Perhaps one of the most significant achievements of the term was the reinstate- ment of successful Student Body dances. Noel was loads of fun for all who went. There is no doubt that this Christmas Dance set the pace for many Student Body dances to follow. As the term ended, it was clear that much had been accomplished. The installation of voting machines for elections and an after school dance for the LlO’s are only a few of the many new ideas which emerged in Fall, 1964. For the officers, whose greatest wish was to lead the school wisely and who worked hard for the success achieved, it was a term never to be forgotten. Mr. O'Day Faculty Advisor Kathy Gerson Secreta ry Claire Handelman Treasurer Susie Miller First Vice President Boh Thompson Custodian Stan Shields Athletic Manager Rich Christensen Head Yell Leader OFFICERS spring 1965 The Spring 1965 term was filled with as much excitement, fun, and accomplish- ments as was the Fall term. The Student Body officers made this term one of the best and most memorable. Early in February the officers presented the Treasurer’s Rally which was a great hit and brilliant success. The officers characterized the Addams Family from tele- vision, and tried to persuade Pugsley Addams to buy a Student Body Card. The drive lasted several weeks and concluded with 92% of the Student Body buying cards. The next exciting event was the LlO welcome dance. It proved a huge success drawing over 500 students dancing to the jerk, philie, and many other popular dances. The Class of Fall 1967 added another tradition to George Washington. Yell Leaders were selected to represent Washington at all the forthcoming baseball games. The team appreciated their fine efforts and spirit. George Washington High School was again bestowed the great honor of the Award of Merit from the University of California for the highest grade point average from any high school in California from the graduating class of June 1962. To celebrate this occasion several graduates from the class returned to school for a Scholarship Rally. Junior and Senior Days were different this semester being subject to new' regulations. The dances were both successes drawing a substantial crowd from the student body. The drama department once again presented one of the greatest term plays seen at Washington. The Sound of Music was presented with vigor and enthusiasm and received a good response from its several performances. Two selections were presented on television Easter nite. The students of Washington should all be congratulated for the fine effort that they put forth for the May Festival. A long forgotten tradition of collecting paper back books to earn the May Festival w-as revived. A quota of 3100 books was set, but the students collected over 12,000. The May Festival was fun, exciting, and hilarious for all the students who attended the teacher’s rally and the events of the evening. The semester ended and the work of the officers ceased. Those who participated in the many events offered had many thrilling experiences. Its membership is based on high standards in scholarship and school service. The society was created when the school was opened and has grown to out- standing stature since then. The society’s purpose is to assist in establishing successful function- ing of school activities. Some of its duties are those of maintaining order at rallies, helping the con- fused new sophomores, patroling various areas of the campus, and escorting visitors in school. A school like George Washington offers so many opportunities that it is often difficult to make choices with regard to subjects and activities. For a majority of students these years have been happy, busy, and profitable. For others, unfortunately, more time may have been spent on personal en- joyment than on the self-discipline that makes for success. However, the very fact that nearly nine hundred students have joined the ranks of the alumni this year is proof that there has been accomplishment; and hopefully, there has also been a realization on the part of most as to what needs to be done to achieve responsible citizenship. I am happy to extend congratulations to the many members of the classes of Fall 1964 and Spring 1965 who, having made their choices, are ready to move on with confidence to the next phase of their lives. May I also express my appreciation for the enthusiasm, co- operation, and good work done by class and student body officers. Deserving of my gratitude and yours are those hard- working sponsors Mr. Lai, Mr. Ferrero, Miss Matheu, and Mr. O’Day, whose constant concern for class and school in preparing and supervising the many activities of these past three years has contributed so much to their success and to your pleasure. Finally, I would like to thank Miss Parsons and Mr. Pagano for the truly dedicated service they have given to the students and faculty of George Washington. Without their advice, support, and understanding my assignment here would have been a most difficult one. Instead, my experiences from beginning principal to a veteran of three years have beenTnteresting; educational, certainly; and entertaining — never dull, you may be sure. t-t ■4 'J ) l Ldxi. There are two crews of custodians working from 6 am to 3 pm, and 2 pm to 10:30 pm. They clean and make various repairs around school. Every night they clean the chalk trays, erasers, rooms, and the area around the school. During the term they wax and polish the floors, scrub the walls, and clean the bleachers after every football game. Any other minor repair jobs that are neces- sary are performed by our cus- todians. Cafeteria staff The Cafeteria workers must be complimented for the fine job they do in making, baking, and serving food to the school. There are eight different places where people can buy food during lunch. These places include the cafeteria and carts on the espla- nade. A spot check one day noted that 2200 people buy food during lunch. The cafeteria workers have surely done a wonderful job in serving and cooking for so many people. It should be noted that this is a small picture. This is so because the other workers were too busy serving students to be able to take time out for a picture. Principal’s Cabinet Principal’s Cabinet is a direct line from the stu- dents to Miss Adams. It is a select group of represent- atives from each registry. Any questions or ideas that a student may have are pre- sented to his representative to be asked at each weekly meeting. In turn. Miss Adams answers these ques- tions and she along with any other students are able to make announcements to be delivered to all students by their registry represent- ative. Row 1 (1-r.) During the first year their spirit was shown when many class members took part in two successful projects: the planting of shrubbery and the collection of the Eagle newspaper for servicemen. The junior year was highlighted by a viva- cious Junior Day entitled A Venture in Para- dise, the Junior Day Dance Tahitian Tuist, and a memorable Junior Prom Midnight Mist. Their many activities during their senior year included a highly original Senior Day which was called A World in Distress, and the Senior Day Dance Stardust. The Saturday before Graduation the Senior Prom was held at the St. Francis Hotel in the Italian Room. The theme of the prom was Bella Note. The class was sponsored for a year and a half by Mrs. Friedman, after which the spon- sorship was taken over by Mr. Lai. Because of their capable guidance and devotion, they will long be remembered by the Class of Fall 1964. Marty Gold President Mr. Ferrero Sponsor HISTORY . . . CLASS OF SPRING 1965 As low sophomores the class got off to a rapid start under the leadership of its President Stan Shields, Student Body Second Vice-President Noah Griffin and class sponsor, Mr. Ferrero, with the success of its class project, planting rose hushes in the Veterans Court. The class held its first cake sale and first car wash, both tremendously successful. The class was then the largest in the school with nearly 1000 students. During its second semester with John Adams as president, the class again held a car wash and a Cake sale, both adding a substantial amount to the treasury. The project that term was sending old copies of the Fagle to alumni overseas and was accomplished with enthusiasm. With Stan Shields again as president, the class had a memorable low junior term. It held the largest cake sale in the history of GWHS with over 200 cakes contributed. As high juniors and under the skillful leadership of its officers including Mark Bautista, the class had an eventful term. Junior Day, entitled How to Succeed in Baseball Without Really Trying, or On the Bench”, under the direction of Claire Handelman, was very successful. The Junior Day Dance entitled Baseball” was attended by hundreds and was a roaring success. The Junior Prom, Shangri-La was held in the gym. The King and Queen were Mark Petersen and Ciail Goldstein. With John Adams as President the class was busy in its next to the last term. A Hootenany given by the class was a tremendous success financially. The class also helped with the PTA membership drive, in addition to making plans for Senior Day and the Senior Prom. High seniors, under its capable president Marty Gold, worked hard. Senior Day, with a theme of entertainment in San Francisco, directed by Bart Wechsler displayed the class’s talent. It was followed by a very successful Senior Day Dance entitled Senior a Go-Go . The Senior Prom, The Twelfth of Never , was held at the St. Francis Hotel and was truly a night to remember. Aided by the funds from another cake sale, the class was able to leave a gift to the school as a memento. The class, having dwindled to about 650 members, was now a united group, one which will remember Washington proudly and which will be remembered by future Washingtonians. ACTIVITIES When we work, we work hard: When we play, we play hard - Christmas Tableau Brightens Season The Angels protect the Madonna and Child. The Angels sing Mary and Joseph being turned away at the Inn. One of the most picturesque and enjoyable traditions at Washington is the Christmas Tableau. Through the coordination of Mr. Harris, head of the Drama department, the program featured the A Cappella Choir, the girls chorus and the orchestra. The Drama Class portrayed a scene on the stage, while the chorus sang a related song. The Tableaux, which were designed by Mr. Brandt's art class with the help of Mr. Ruane’s stagecraft, depict scenes from the Annunciation through the birth of Christ. An Angel guides a hand for the paint- ing of the Madonna. The Angels plea for peace on earth. 100 The A Cappella Choir Whips Row 1 (1. to r.): Wong, Cohen, Clark, Traccner, Traig, Murphy, Avilla, Tung, Krauss, Hodgkinson, Chu. The money that these students collect is used to subsidize many student body activities such as the dances, the May Festival, and the term play. The money is also used to buy the uniforms for the athletic teams. The top WHIP of the year was Jane S. Wong. Broadcast Staff (L. to r.): Gore, Soriano, Mack. To give the people of affluent societies a chance to share their wealth with those who have little, and to break down the walls and barriers between people, are the chief goals of the Red Cross Society here at Washington. In the past, the Red Cross had aided in time of disaster and war. Last year, the society undertook good-will projects for both the fall and spring semesters. Last fall, besides holding the annual membership drive, the Red Cross sent a Friendship Album containing pictures of Washington to Australia. During the spring semester, the Red Cross painted orange-juice cans which were sent to hospitals to be used as flower vases. In general, the High School Red Cross is a program designed to help our students better understand the relationship of one human to another. MM Award of Merit Assembly m 1 1 Poisoning time again! THE GREAT SEASON The 1964 Varsity Football Team was probably the finest that Washington has ever had. The first game against Lowell saw the Scarlet and Grey win in the final quarter on two quick touchdowns. The next two games against Balboa and Poly found Washing- ton losing its only games of the season. Washington pulled the upset of the year by defeating Lincoln 39-31, a game that will be long remembered by Washingtonians as the greatest Bell Game. It was the first game in which our of- fense came alive . After the Bell Game, Wilson and Galileo were overwhelmed by the Eagle eleven. The Eagles played SH in a driving rainstorm, winning the mud bowl classic 25-0. We then defeated Mission 60-7. This victory set a new school scoring mark with the Eagles rolling up 487 yards against a mere 78 for the Bears. In the final game, the defense sparkled and turned back SI after they advanced inside our fifteen yard line four times. Revenge was sweet against Poly in the playoff game as the Parrots fell 19-0. Turkey Day left no doubt as to who was the city’s number one team as the Eagles beat Lincoln for the coveted CHAMPIONSHIP 27-6. The Eagles placed five men on the all-city team. QB Pete Mullins finished the season with 22 TD passes and 1,537 yards passing. Nate Kirtman was named Back of the Year in the AAA. Conrad Harris caught 13 TD passes and was as brilliant on offense as he was on defense. Not enough can be said about Seth Hicks and Mark Petersen, co-captains of the team: both were all-city guards, Seth for the second straight year. Center John Adams made second string All-City, and five others received honorable men- tion: They were Lee Benton, Ken Price, Perry Edwards, Greg Pedrin, and Steve Lassiter. It was the big year, the great year, a season which will long be remembered by Washingtonians. ’etcrsen gives its througl WASHINGTON RETAINS BELL Co-captains Mark Petersen and Seth Hicks with Bell Queen Donna Harris This year Donna Harris was chosen as Washington’s Bell Queen to represent our school at the traditional Washington-Lin- coln football game. Her court included Judy Cortopassi, Suzi Ching, Kathy Gerson, Karen Nakai, and Carolyn Tung. The 1964 Bell game will probably be remem- bered as the greatest game of the rival series. This was due to the offensive leadership of Pete Mullins and the defensive leadership of Nate Kirtman, both of whom, for their fine efforts, were co-awarded the S.F. Prep Writers’ Prep of the Week Award. Lincoln was rather surprised when Pete Mul- lins completed 14 of 25 passes for 247 yards and 5 touchdown passes. Conrad Harris was on the receiving end of 4 of those passes. At the end of the first half the score was tied 19-19. Washington, falling behind in the second half 25-19, stormed back with three consecutive touchdowns. Mike O’Neal rambled in from the 14 yard line for the first TD and then Mullins took to the air again. Nate Kirtman and Conrad Harris each scored on aerial bombs from Pete Mullins. The game ended with the rooting sec- tion pouring onto the field. The final score was 39-31. Washington retained the Bell for an- other year. ‘Hull! FALL SONG GIRLS AND YELL LEADERS PLAYOFFS 19-0 Turkey Day, here we come! Washington blanked Poly 19-0 in the playoffs to give the Eagles a shot at Lincoln for the league title. Nate Kirtman was the offensive star against the Parrots. He gained 179 yards rushing, scoring twice. The first touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery by Conrad Harris. Kirtman ran it in and Dane- man added the extra point. In the fourth quarter Pete Mullins hit Harris ;.n the end zone to put the game on ice. Later in the period Kirtman scored again to make it 19-0. Revenge was sweet for the Eagles. EAGLE CHAMPS For the first time in the history of Washington, the football team won both the round-robin and the playoff championship. It took quite a bit of doing, but the victory erased the doubt that many had. The Eagles scored four times in the first half to put the game out of reach. The Eagle defense, led by guards Mark Petersen and Seth Hicks, did most of the damage. Each of the touchdowns came as a result of a sparkling effort on the part of the defense. Three passes intercepted and three recovered fumbles were cashed in on four scores. Lincoln relived the defeat of the Bell game. The victory was Washington’s eighth in a row. The sea- son was finished with a 9-2 record. Washington won 27-6. Congratulations to Coaches Lubamersky and Nelson for their success. Team Lowell Balboa Poly . After an undefeated season in 1963, it wasn’t until the sixth game, Mission, that the Eagle JV’s tasted defeat under Mr. Firpo’s coaching. Three Eagle TD’s were called back and five members of the team were hospitalized as the Eagles lost 21-19. Just before the Lowell game, which could have meant the championship, five players were moved up to the varsity. The game was lost 6-0 on a blocked punt. The team was led by captain Juan Gaines at flankerback, Daryl Strickland and Doug Gillon at the halfback spots, and Sam Holmes at end. Holmes averaged two TD’s a game. Outstanding linemen included Steve Pera at guard and Tony Gaitani at tackle. The team finished the season with an excellent 6-2 record. (Kneeling) Coach McGrath. ___________________________ Unlike most basketball teams at Washington, the varsity did not win the championship. In fact, the year was a very disappointing one with the varsity compiling a 2-7 record which was good enough for sixth place in the AAA. Rich Gray led the team in scoring and rebounding and was followed by Reed Gash. Pre-season bright spots were few, but Gene Holman was named to the All-Tournament Team in the Riordan Tournament and Reed Gash was given the same honor for the Palo Alto Invitational Tourney. Concluding the AAA season Rich Gray and Reed Gash were named honorable mention members of the AAA All-City squad. Backing up the above mentioned were Steve Bell, Dick Moses, Sam Holmes, and Steve Mizel. ps two against Gal. During Christmas the team won the Los Altos Invitational Tournament. In doing so the Eagle five established a single game scoring mark of 61 points and the three game scoring record of 171 points bettered that old mark by over thirty points. Playing Lincoln in the final game before the playoffs, the 130’s tied the single game school scoring mark of 75 points. The team went on to defeat Wilson in the play- offs and then clobbered Mission for the Cham- pionship. The varsity track team went undefeated in the round robin for the second complete year which covered almost 25 dual meets, but failed to duplicate last year’s victory at Kezar. There were however, many bright spots. The team scored 36 points in the All-City Meet. Ernie Provost won the 100 and 220, then went down to the State Meet and ran a 9.6 100, and a fantastic 20.8 220 to take a third and second respectively. In the All-City Meet Sims and Kirtman placed in both hurdles, Duckworth took a second in the shot and Williams placed in the Discus. The relay team captured a second. The 130’s finished the dual meet season with a 6-2 record then finished third in the All-City meet. The team was led by sprinters Otto and Ray Coleman, Allen Nassau, Jeff Shifs, and 1320 runner, Jim Martin. In the field events Mike Rago was the best in the shot and Neyland was the same in the high jump. The team scored 29l z points in the All-City Meet. The 120’s scored 24 points in the All-City Meet, but that was two and a half points short of Galileo, who won the championship. The team did turn in some very fine marks. Arthur Wong won the 660 and Doug Rader was right behind. Butch Colyear won the 330 and placed in the 150 relay. Doyle Miller took a third in the hurdles and Heida did the same in the shot. The swimmers concluded a very successful season at Fleishacker Pool by winning the 120’s championship and finishing second in both the varsity and 130’s divi- sions. Each of the divisions in the dual meet season did very well. The 120’s and 130’s were undefeated and the varsity lost two meets. Alex Moskowitz broke the city record in the 100yd Breast stroke in the trials, and in the finals the 120’s 200yd medley relay team, composed of Wayne Hiroshima, Ron Omori, Howard Terada, and Steve Blumenkrantz, also broke the city record. Other finalists in the All-City meet were Ron Omori in the 50 free and Keith Hori in the butterfly. Both took firsts. Shimamoto, Pearl, Rogers, and team captain Constine rounded out the scoring for the cham- pionship 120's team. The 130’s lost to SI by a single oint, 53-52. Both relay teams took firsts as did Roger trauss in the back stroke. The varsity finished second to a strong SI team, scoring 38 points. Shestakov, Harris, Clark, and Bangert roundea out the scoring for the varsity. ■■ii Through the fine shooting of city champ Brad Lucy, the golf team won the city championship. The teams only loss of the season was to S.I. and the Eagles beat them in the all-city finals for an undesputed first place finish. The teams biggest win was over arch-rival Lowell. It was Steve Back’s fine round that enabled a two shoke Eagle victory. The varsity baseball team had a disappoint- ing season with a record of 6-12. The team, however, was somewhat better than their record indicates. They lost six, one-run games, but they rose to the occasion to defeat some of the league’s top teams. Steve Lauer was the club’s leading batter and Roger Sarria was the leading pitcher and team’s most valuable player. In his honor and memory an annual award is given to the athlete who best exemplifies his spirit. Super- ior competitive attitude and excellent physical ability, both on and off the playing field, and in the classroom were the reasons for Mike Ivanoe and Nate Kirtman being chosen as the AL CATIMON AWARD WINNERS for Fall 1964 and Spring 1965. AL CATIMON AWARD Spring Nate Kirtman Mike Ivanoe was a goalie on our cham- pionship Soccer team and made all-city each of his three years at Washington. In the Spring Mike turned to baseball, playing all infield positions. He was an excellent athlete and team leader. Nate Kirtman’s achievements speak for his ability on the gridiron. A halfback on our championship Football team, Nate was chosen as the AAA Back of the year, All- Metropolitan Back of the Year, Scholar- Athlete Aw'ard representative from SF, and named as the Northern California Back of the Year. In the Spring Nate turns to Track, running the hurdles where he placed in the all-city meet for the past two years. GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT — Chris Cavas Fall 1964 Board of Officers L. to r.: Penny Bull, Donna Fung, Judy Holt. Membership in the Girls Athletic Association now totals approximately 600 girls, half the amount of girls at G.W.H.S. To become a member of G.A.A. a girl must join one of the many offered sports, and must participate weekly. Some of the sports offered are bowling, ice skating, tennis, modern dance, folk dance, volleyball, badminton, and basketball. If by the end of the semester, the girl has attended % of the sport meet- ings, she will receive the Numeral award. The Chevron, Circle W, Block W, Star and the Gold Pin, respectively are the awards which follow the Numeral. To become a recipient of the Gold Pin, a girl must have partici- pated in G.A.A. since her low 10 year. In April, the G.A.A. hosted a volleyball playday to participants from all S.F. high schools. The Washing- ton G.A.A. has also been invited to and has participated in many similar play days from other schools. In May, the G.A.A. held their annual Jinx — refreshments were served, there was entertainment, and the Block, Star, and pins were awarded. The G.A.A. welcomes all girls, and each girl in turn is rewarded by meeting new people, and by participating in exciting sports. The Block W is the Society made eligible to girls who have received their block in the Girls Athletic Association. Receiving a block does not make one automatically a member of the Block W Society; a member must regularly attend meetings and must be active in GAA. During the fall, the Block W society was quite successful in the candy sale in which they collected one hundred and fifty dollars for their treas- ury. Also during the fall, the old members hosted a welcome pot luck dinner to the new block members. Members have also assisted in sportnights, the G.A.A. Candidates rally, and the G.A.A. Awards Rally. Fall officers were: President, Joanne Cordellos; Secretary, Naida Soriano; and Treasurer, Sophia Chung. The big event in the year held in the spring, was the weekend trip to Mt. Tamalpais which was made possible by the fall candy sale. This was the first trip of its kind made by the Block W Society, and its huge success showed that there will by many more trips to follow. The Spring members also hosted a welcoming dinner to the new block members. Watch the Sitting down on the job? A TRIBUTE WE SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER . . . That you were present at every school function. That you always had a friendly smile and an encouraging word. That you always put the welfare of George Washington High School above all else. That you spent many week-ends and vaca- tiondays at school to make life easier for all of us. WE SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER . . . That while, at times, we may have grumbled about your decision, eventually we realized that you were right. That what you proposed was for our best interests. WE SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER . . . Your constant concern for our developing standards of behavior for every social occa- sion. Your patience during the many long re- hearsals for Junior and Senior Days. Your smile that played about your lips when we tried to put something over ’ and you knew exactly what we were doing. WE SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER . . . Your loyal devotion to the Girls Service Society — Your concern for knowing the names of each member. Your defense of the group whenever anyone criticized its value to the school. WE SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER . . . That you listened to the same excuses of girls trying to convince you that they did not cut class when you knew they did. That for many of these girls you made some incident a lasting and memorable occasion by your kindness and understanding. You are truly a remarkable person, Miss Parsons, being able to cope first with the problems of the classroom, then with those of the Counseling Office, and lastly with those of the Dean of Girls’ Office. In all your dealings with other people, in all matters large or small, you were always fair. No problem was too trivial for your attention—no disappointment too unimportant for your sympathy. It must have been rewarding when you saw a class graduate and realize how many of those girls you had helped either directly or • indirectly. Now you are leaving George Wash- ington High School, the school in which you have spent many years and on which you have made a lasting impression. We shall miss you, but we shall always remember you with respect and affection. 220
