MISS RUTH ADAMS, PRINCIPAL DEDICA TION The editors of the 1963 Surveyor wish to dedicate this yearbook to the first woman principal of George Washington High School, Miss Ruth Adams. A native Californian, Miss Adams has devoted all her time and energy to the education and development of young people. During her college years, Miss Adams taught tennis and swimming to younger girls in her home town of Redwood City. Her first teaching assignment was at the College of Notre Dame where she taught Physical Education. In 1937, she joined the faculty of Lowell High School, and during the next twelve years worked as a counselor, a P.E. teacher, a co-ordinator of school activities, and an assistant to the Dean. Then she became Assistant Principal at Commerce High School, and in 1951 transferred to Balboa. In I960, Miss Adams returned to Lowell as the Dean of Girls, and in 1962 was chosen to succeed Mr. Schmaelzle as Principal of George Washington High School. We would like to wish Miss Adams success in her coming years as Principal of George Washington High School. 3 AD MINISTRA TION 5 Miss Adams talks over the yearbook plans with co-editors Donna Baldocchi and Karen Gainey. MISS ADAMS' MESSAGE If one were asked what makes a school great each of us would give answers reflecting our own experience and our own interests. However, we could all agree that excellent teachers and diligent, disciplined students are basic to scholastic success. In addition we would agree that certain important conditions promote school spirit and morale; namely, strong student government, good sportsmanship and a well balanced program of athletics, social activities and special interest clubs. George Washington High School has all of these hallmarks of greatness and has them in generous meas- ure. By way of extra distinction we can point to the beauty of the buildings and the million dollar view in all directions. Finally since you, the students, are our most important product,” your every day performance is of the utmost importance in maintaining the stand- ards that have given the school its fine reputation. You need only look at the outstanding record made by George Washington graduates for proof that their con- sistent efforts have been rewarded with success. This past school year has been a big one from the standpoint of enrollment with over 2900 students and 121 faculty members. However, size alone is no dis- tinction, nor is it a reason for rejoicing. Rather it should have given us a sharper awareness of the need to work harmoniously and courteously with others. You have shown your good will in many ways and I am most appreciative of your cooperation. Certainly the first year as the principal of George Washington High School has been a rewarding experience for me. Your gracious welcome and the continuing support of the whole student body, the faculty and the Parent Teacher Association have made this a great year. I am especially frateful to the seniors — graduates of Fall '62 and pring '63 for their part in my education as a principal. To them I give my thanks and sincere congratulations. May their future success be measured not only in ma- terial ways but in more lasting and satisfying things of the spirit—human understanding and respect for the rights of all mankind. 6 Ruth M. E N I 0 R Sally Guillon Vice-President Gustavia Gash Treasurer CLASS OF FALL 1962 In February, 1959, the Class of Fall 1962 entered Washington as low sophomores. We were a very small class, but we possessed a great school spirit and sense of responsibility toward our school and our class. During the first year at Washington, the class par- ticipated in three successful projects: the planting of shrubbery, a car wash, and the collection of the Eagle newspapers for the servicemen. In the Junior year the class had three more suc- cessful endeavors: a cake sale, the Junior Day and Dance entitled Ragtime Razzle,” and the memorable Stairway to the Stars” Prom. The Senior year included such activities as present- ing the unforgettable Senior Day and Dance, Nordic Nights,” and dancing at the enchanting Senior Prom, Blue Fantasy.” The Class of Fall 1962 will never forget their three years at Washington. We are extremely grateful to our class sponsor, Miss Alexander, for all her help and guidance. AUTOGRAPHS 100 A U T 0 G R A P H S 101 Vice-President Beth Wilson Treasurer Jean Hashamoto CLASS OF SPRING, 1963 Our first term in Washington began in the Fall of I960. The majority of the class came in with great enthusi- asm and anticipation for our high school days. We began our fabulous Washingtonian history by selling cakes in order to buy shrubbery for the landscape of ”our school.” Noah Griffin, our class president, with assistance from Beth Wilson, vice-president, successfully carried out this project. Our high sophomore term project was the collection of Eagle newspapers for servicemen. Finally, w-e became juniors. Naturally we eagerly awaited for Junior Day and Junior Day Dance. Of course, we cannot forget our Junior Prom, ’’Midnight Magic,” at the Grand Ball Room of the Fairmont. We had great fun and then we realized that our Senior year was at our doorstep. We now- ascended to that final step. We were the high and mighty seniors. Time surely flew by fast. Our finale, Senior Day ‘63, was a great finishing touch to our wonderful years. We danced the last dance of the Senior Prom with tears in our eyes. We wished each other good luck and lots of happiness in the future. This year was led by George Whitsell and Beth Wilson. There is one person to whom wfe owe lots more than words can say. He is our never-tiring sponsor, Mr. O’Day. Without his devoted assistance we could never have been as successful as we were. We would now like to say ’’Thank You, Mr. O'Day, from the bottom of our hearts. The opener of the season was against the Irish of Sacred Heart, when the Eagles suffered the first of many crushing defeats. The final score: Sacred Heart 21, Washington 6. The second game of the season proved to be the most heartbreaking. With only seconds left to play, and the Eagles carrying the ball, they missed a first down and Lowell took over. With 30 seconds to go, Lowell made a touchdown, making the final score Lowell 24, Washing- ton 19. VARSITY GRIDDERS IMPROVE OVER ’61 SEASON Bob Hurley (32) catches a pass in the S. I. game. The next game the Eagles played was their first victory of the season; it came on a fifteen yard pass from Zingmark to Hurley, and a 3 yard jaunt by Russ Ma- lone for the PAT, making the final tally 14-13. Seth Hicks (58), James McGee (44), and Ron Balakian (54) go after the Mission Ball Carrier. Galileo Game action. The fifth game, like the Lowell gamef was a heartbreaker for the Eagles, with the Eagles losing to the Bucs by a score of 18-14, although the Eagles had made four touchdowns. The Mission game, although the Eagles were scoreless, proved to be one of the most exciting of the season. Both teams displayed terrific pass- ing, running, and blocking, but the Bears over- ran the Eagles 19 0. On Saturday, October 20, the Eagles were met and defeated by the Mustangs at the annual Lin- coln-Washington Bell Game. The Eagles kept the Mustangs in line during the first half, but lost by a score of 40-6. Vic Bessabava (39) carries ihe hall in the Mission Game. Even though S. I. has been picked as the top high school football team in the nation, the Eagles put up a fight that really surprised everyone. The Eagles kept the score 0-0, for almost the entire first half, and not until the end of the game did the Wildcats tally up their points. The final score: Wildcats 27, Eagles 6. The second and last victory for the Eagles came on the closing game of the season with a victory over Galileo. The first play of action touched off an 84-yard run by Bob Hurley to bring to the Eagles a quick 7-0 lead. Washington makes Lowell bite the dust. 139 J. V.
