We discovered that it has, not three, but five rings. Rather than explain further, we invite you to sit back, relax, and “Come to the Circus, the Greatest Show on Earth.” MARCIA SAVIN IILO WERTHEIM LILO WERTHEIM. Editor. O. I. SCHMAELZLE. Principol. MARCIA SAVIN. Editor Principal’s Message The theme for the Surveyor this year is rather unusual and clever. One could compare our school with a circus in that both require precision, cooperation and team work. Like a circus, our school has much going on at one time but unlike a circus we change personnel frequently. To this outgoing class we recognize the contribution that has been made for the welfare of our school. We appreciate it all. After you leave us we expect your performance to be a reflection on your training while here. May the applause from your efforts be great and gratifying. O. I. SCHMAELZLE Head Counselor Your high school career is the bridge between childhood and adult life. Each responsibility you hove successfully met has been a new pier sunk—a pier which strengthened your character and prepared you for future service. Now os you go on to college or to work there will be many opportunities for you to make use of the lessons learned in high school and many opportunities to serve your family, your fellow students and your community. May the best be yours in all this work as you approach your first bridge terminal. E. PARSONS MISS ELEANOR PARSONS Head Counselor Mr. Perino Graduates of June 1953, you were a wonderful class and George Washington High School will always be very proud of you. I am certain that whotever you do in life you will always strive to reflect honor and glory on that cherished school on the hill as other classes have done who have gone this way before you. Whatever you achieved at school will always be with you and will in part determine what you will be and will do in life. I hope you hove availed your- selves of as many opportunities as you possibly could during the last three years. Furthermore. I trust that you will continue to take advantage of the many opportunities for a successful life that await you in the adult world of which you will soon be a part. In parting, I want you to know that there are many discontented and unsuccessful people in this world who feel abused and dissatisfied with their lot but who do nothing to lift themselves. Success is achieved by those who are willing to work and work hard for it. Success will not come to you if you just wish and wait. Farewell, class of June 1953, may you always have a goal and may your lives be ever blessed with health and happiness. J. A. PERINO MR. J. A. PERINO Assistant Principal MISS MYRA GREEN Assistant Principal Miss Green My first year at George Washington is over. Was it a circus? Not exactly. Although there were times when I felt as if I were performing in all three rings at once. However, this typifies the exuberant spirit which is George Washington High School. Never a dull moment but how we love it! I am so glad to have this opportunity to say thank you to all the students and faculty for your gracious friendly reception of me. You made it im- possible for me to be a stranger in a strange land. I am indeed fortunate to have a part with you in this great school. MYRA GREEN 5 Presenting I he Faculty Members MR. VASQUEZ DIANE BERMAN Vice President PRINCETON LYMAN Second Vice President ARDATH PERKINS Secretary Student Body Officers -Fall '52 BILL JAQUYSH was one of the most conscientious Student Body Presidents that George Washing- ton has ever had. Assisted by an unusually fine corps of officers. Bill planned great rallies, double lunches, and all the activities that go to make up a successful term. Our sparkling and vivacious Vice-President was DIANE BERMAN. She was a star performer in the rallies and was the first ’veep’’ to sing over the Broadcast. PRINCETON LYMAN not only expanded the office of Second Vice but originated one of our student government's most important organizations, the Coordinating Board. You just had to look for a meeting or an activity and there you would find ARDATH PERKINS, Sec- retary. A harder worker couldn't have been found anywhere. NICK KAFKAS. Treasurer, came through with another record for being 100% in Student Body cards. On ability to sell game tickets PHIL GAAL really roted high. He sold more game tickets than any other Athletic Manager. EARL SMITH was another hard worker. He never failed to give a very capable helping hand to the other officers. The term s Yell Leader was BERNIE SLAVIN. He aroused tremendous spirit and led our rooting sec- tion to fame many times. WILLIAM JAQUYSH President NICK KAFKAS EARL SMITH PHIL GAAL RERNIE SLAVIN Treasurer Custodian Athletic Manager Yell Leader 8 Student Body Officers - Spring S3 Again this term, George Washington had a fine hard-working group of student body officers who did an excellent job to make the Spring term a big success. President PHIL GAAL and his rally com- mittee produced above-par rallies all term. ARDATH PERKINS, our Vice-President, did an outstanding job of planning dances and social activities. ALLAN SEID, Second Vice-President, did a wonderful job with the May Festivol Drive, helping us collect 3,997 cans. The records and minutes were kept in the usual neat monner by Secretary BARBARA SWANSON. George Washington was once more 100% in Student Body Card sales, thanks to the fine work of Treasurer EARL SMITH. Custodian MAURICE PARKS kept the trophies shining brilliantly all term. Athletic Manager AL WOLF did a good job on ticket sales for the term. His advertising of coming sports events was also exceptional. School spirit was kept at a high level all term by Yell Leader MARIO GALANG. Mario had the students yelling at the top of their lungs in the basketball finals, when we just missed the championship. Executive Council In every democracy there must be o policy making branch. In the democracy of George Washing- ton High School, the Executive Council is that group. The lunchtime problem and rally exclusion were only two of the problems that confronted the Execu- tive Council this year. Due to hard work by all the members, many new ideas and suggestions were tried to help solve both of these major school problems. Some of the duties of the Executive Council are: the apportioning of school funds, the passing of by-laws to supplement our Constitution, and the granting of awards and honors in the name of the student body. Made up of elected Executive Council members, class officers and the student body officers, the executive council meets many times during the year in room 138 to discuss the problems of the student government. Presided over by the student body president and advised by Miss Selig. the Council makes possible a truly democratic Student Government. Washington Cabinet The Washington Cabinet, made up of representatives from each registry, is the sounding board for school problems. The cabinet meets every Tuesday at 8 a.m. in room 235. at which time registry problems are placed before Mr. Schmaelzle and the delegates. It is the duty of each elected representative to take ques- tions and problems from his registry to the cabinet. In the meeting the question is discussed and a proper solution is worked out by the members. During registry the same day. the registry students are presented with the minutes of the cabinet meeting. A discussion of them follows. Originally, the Washington Cabinet was a group of girls, one from each registry. The cabinet was so successful that Mr. Schmaelzle adopted the plan for the whole school. Today, as in the past, the Wash- ington Cabinet acts as an advisory board to the Principal and the Executive Council. Row 1 (loft to right): Marie Mothios, Marilyn Abend. Danise Blue. Milly Kalsh. SPRING SENIOR DAY Spring Class History The Spring graduating doss owes much of its success to its sponsor Mr. John Rocky, who aided the doss In putting into effect the many new ideas that they initiated. Hill Billy Doze was the theme of Junior Day, which was followed by the ’'Hick-Hop ' donee. This doss introduced wearing dresses instead of formats to the Junior Prom at their Prom. Moonlight Silhouettes held at the Palace Hotel. Then come their senior year, which will be long remembered by every class member. They tried something new again by replacing the Senior- Soph Dance with a Senior-Soph Sport Nite. Their Senior Day was ‘Omnibus which was followed by a successful dance. Next came the event that every- one had been waiting for, the Sen- ior Prom. Our Very Own, held at the St. Francis Hotel. Commence- ment was June 8. in the Opera House ABEL, DAVID — Photogrophy; Cycling; Continue privote music study. ABRAMOWITZ. IRVING —Sports: C.C.S.F. AKASHI, HELEN—Reg. Veep; S. LINCOLN Fighting valiantly the Eagles put up a tremendous defense but they just couldn't produce the offensive. They lost the bell ond the ball game by a 7 to 0 score. John Panogakis ond Bob Arterberry scored the five touch- downs. Washington beat Galileo in the second game. 26-6. The score indicates a slaughter, but the game was anything but that, as the Eaglets had Lady Luck riding on their shoulders. The Junior Varsity broke the two game win streak, with a loss to Lincoln. Washington ployed a poor game, losing to the Colts, 15 to 7. Playing their best game of the season, the Junior Varsity picked up to trounce Poly. 37-12. Washington met St. Ignatius next on a fog-swept field, beating them in a see-saw battle, 31 to 20. The Junior Varsity then met Mission, at the Mission field, for what proved to be a very important game. In beating the Bear Cubs, 20-2. the Eaglets found themselves tied for first place in the league. In this game Washington displayed a superb defense. The Eaglets flying high on a five won, one lost rec- ord, trounced the Lowell Indians 28-0. This game was not all peaches and cream, os the Junior Varsity lost two first string players because of injuries. In the last game of the season. Washington beat Balboa 18-7. The Eaglets opened the season fast with a win against Mission, followed closely by wins over Lincoln and Galileo. During these first few games they looked good, but a little inexperienced. In their next league appearance the 130's lost an upset to Lowell. Next came the Wildketters from Saint Ignatius. This was the key gome of the season and all hopes rode on this game. The 130's came through and beat S. I. in a close game. (S. I. later took the champion- ship.) Fate again stepped in as the Balboa Pirates literally stole the championship right from under our noses in another upset. The Eaglets had a bad doy and just couldn’t get any points no matter how hard they tried. The Eaglets won the next two games—ending the regular season in a first place tie with Saint Ignatius. In the semi-final game Washington met Goli'eo. However, the Lions were too much and Washington bowed to Galileo. WASHINGTON-BALBOA — The Bucs scored more points than any team against Washington up to this date. However, it was not enough. Washington on top 72l 2-40l 2, 60l 2-l6l 2, and 49-10. WASHINGTON-LINCOLN — The Eagles put an- other record in the books this time as they really slaughtered Lincoln in every divYon. The points — 105-8, 53-24. and 53-6. In the last dual track meet of the season the Wash- ington Eagles beat the highly rated Lowell Indians. The score was 66l 2-46l 2. Dennis Lantermon, setting the pace and breaking the old record set by Ron Bauer, posted a new record of 9:20.3. This is almost ten seconds better than the 1949 record set by Bauer. The Eagles won the race by beating Lowell 45-47 to win the All-City meet. Outstanding runners on the team were Al Carlson, Doug Lummis, Bill Collins, Don Robinson, Roy Eickele, Merle Martin, Dennis Moorhead and Bob Matulae. Ten n is The tennis team with Mr. Reade as coach had a very successful season. Although Lowell, who never tires of pulling in the tennis championship, defeated the Eagles in the opener by a score of 6-1, the racket squad dropped Poly by a 7-0 score. Lincoln went down to defeat before the Eagles, this time by a 6-1 score. In the netmen's hard-fought match against Lowell the second doubles team of Aanonsen and Nichols racked up the one point that wos scored against the high and mighty Indians. In the practice season they were able to hit and score runs, as they finished with an 11 and 3 pre- league record. The Choir alone has performed in an over- whelming number of activities, such as ral- lies, term-play, graduation, alumni concert and numerous other activities. One of the best loved traditions of George Washington is the annual Christ- mas tableau. Under the direction of Mrs. Myrtle Swanson, the choral group brought back the lovely music of the first Christmas in Bethlehem, displaying a stream of beau- tifully blended voices. A great deal of thanks and congratula- tions go to the well deserving members of the Choral groups. ?OW '° 79M): Morylinn Stoudt. Down Duino. Pot Hilke. Beverly Zum. Gail Coop.r, Soroh Londou. Under the direction of Mr. Her- bert Welch, the Band and Orchestra per- formed in the Spring Concert, numerous rallies and the Christmas Tableau. The Band played faithfully at all foot- ball games during the season and at all the important basketball games. The Or- chestra made a wonderful showing at the Californio Music Festival in Berkeley. The Orchestra played at the fall and spring term plays as well as for both graduations while ensembles played for various special occasions. The Eagle Published approximately every two weeks by the members of the Journalism class is the EAGLE, the school newspaper. Under the supervision of Mr. Wire, stu- dent newshawks of George Washington High School work hard to put out a pa- per that the rest of the stu- dent body will enjoy. The subscription drive was very successful this year with ROCHELLE STEINBERG GAIL WEINGARTEN Spring Editor Fall Editor over half the student body patronizing its newsprinted pages. The EAGLE also re- ceives over eighty exchange papers from high schools all over the United States. Editors for this year were Gail Weingarten, Fall term, and Rochelle Steinberg, Spring term. Co-operating with them were reporters from two Journalism classes. Left to right: Gone Larson, Fred Ingram. Bob Grant, Roy MacIntyre, Seated: Arlene Glow. The Surveyor While one half of the jour- nalism students are working on the school newspaper, the other half are using their tal- ents for the year book, the SURVEYOR. Work on the annual actually starts early in the fall semester, yet the SURVEYOR doesn't “come out until June. First the ideas are assembled, the layout is made, and the ac- tual fun (and work) begins. MARCIA SAVIN LEE WERTHEIM Co-Editors High senior pictures are taken, activities ore photo- graphed and then the book begins to take shape. The Greatest Show on Earth was originated by Editors Lee Wertheim and Marcia Savin, and made possible by the hard work of the editors-in-chief and the staff members, who worked hard to moke it truly “The Greatest Show on Earth. Activities and Organizations The activities and organizations at George Washington really need no introduction. The popularity of our clubs has grown so much that almost every Washingtonian has a membership in one or more of our nearly 20 organizations. The range is wide, from the Dance Committees to the Future Teachers of America, and every club is led by energetic students. The active Y clubs had many service and social activities this year, many under the supervision of the “Y Council. The Scarlet and Gray Society, now in its second year, con- tinued to serve the school as hall patrol during classes, besides performing many other services for the school. Two new dubs were organized this year. They are the Science Club and the Floral Arts Club. This makes two more activities at George Washington designed with the hobbies and likes of the students in mind. The many activities at George Washington only make true the motto of our school. When we work, we work hard. When we play, we play hard. Coordinating Board Row 1 (left to right): larbara Politer, Judy Pape. Elliett Wonhouer, Allan Said, iaff Strout. Ann Costre, Felicia lonfieri.
