FOREWORD • • • Our book of Golden Memories tells a story not only of our school, George Washington High, but also of our city, San Francisco. Many scenes that are familiar to us are recorded within this book so that we can recall with pleasure our rides on the cable car, trips to Fisherman's Wharf, and views of San Francisco from Coit Tower. All these little experiences have become as much a part of our lives as have the football games and dances that we have attended while in school. San Francisco is our treasure found by the bay; George Washington offers us precious thoughts for the future. Our school has given us the education that is so neces- sary in our world today. Our instructors have given us opportunities to gain success in our chosen courses of study; the results of our learning rest in our abilities to make use of our knowledge. We have worked hard, but we have also played hard. We attended football games and track meets, dances and sport nites; we experienced a lot of fun. Our school has given us treasured moments that we shall relive again as we read through our book of Golden Memories of George Washington High School. I. SCHMAELZLE, principal Principal s Message The Soppiest days of your life are the days you spend in high school. Because they are such happy days they con easily be called Golden Days. This volume of our school’s year book is appropriately named Golden Memories. This book will be a treasure house of golden memories of your happy high school days. It is a beau- tiful book well arranged and full of material that will bring back to you many of the events you took part in or that you had the opportunity to witness. To the student staff, and the faculty sponsor, Mr. Wire, we owe our thanks and our appreciation for this memory book with its golden days of the past. Read it, preserve it and refer to it os a record of a wonderful year. O. I. Schmaelzle, Principal MISS MARGARET POOLE Head Counselor Head Counselor Meeting students as individuals instead of a group, and getting to know them os individuals, answered Miss Poole when asked what she liked best about being head counselor. As far as schooling is concerned, Miss Poole attended Oak- land Tech High and the University of California. Before coming to Washington in 1936 as a PE teacher, she taught at Salinas Union High and Junior College and Petaluma High School. Miss Poole thinks that George Washington is one of the most pleasant and stimulating schools in the city. Miss Eleanor Parsons Our Deon of Girls, Miss Eleanor Parsons, received her A.B. degree when at the University of California. She had been our CSF sponsor and Head Counselor up until Miss Jackson retired in Spring '51. In her high school days, Miss Parsons attended Alameda High. During her college days, she worked port time for a real estate company. For five years she taught in Morin County, and then went to work for the Teachers' Placement office. Following a year at Continuation High, Miss Parsons came to George Washington, where she first taught English and Commercial subjects. Mr.]. A. Perino Mr. J. A. Perino graduated from the John Marshall High School in Chicago before he attended the Uni- versity of California where he received his A.B. degree in Sciences ond Master's degree in Education. He first taught at the Golden Gate Junior College and Fresno Technical High School before he come to George Washington as a teacher in 1946. Following this, he was Head Counsellor at the High School of Commerce, an assistant in science curriculum in the downtown office of S. F. Public Schools, and for two years was Head of the Science Department at Poly High. Mr. Perino has. for two years, been the principal of San Francisco Summer School. 7 Student Body Officers—Fall '51 As in the past, an industrious group of student body officers led the way to another successful term for George Washington High School. President Steve Gaol provided the necessary steady hand at the wheel. He did a fine job of putting across the idea that it pays to play ball with the administra- tion. Steve will attend Cal on a scholarship. Ruth Israel, first vice president, planned the many outstanding dances and decorations. Ruth plans to go to either Cal or Stanford. As second vice president, Lloyd Tunik worked hard with the Associate Rally Committee and was always on the scene, ready to help. Secretary Phyllis Rubin kept the minutes and records above standard in neatness and accuracy. Phyllis plans to attend Cal next term. Dick Levis, treasurer, upheld Washington's unbroken record of 100% Student Body card sales in five days. This is the 19th consecutive 100% term. Athletic Manager Dave Moss did a good job of publicizing the sports events and keeping the ticket sales at an impressive level. That hard-working fellow who kept the trophies shin- ing and the banner flying was Dick Fox, custodian. Head Yell Leader Bud Andress brought city-wide recognition to Washington for a high-spirited rooting section and well-planned card stunts. Student Body Officers—Spring ’52 A very copoble group of studentbody officers headed by President, Weyman Lew, provided a suc- cessful spring term for George Washington High School. Weyman helped to plan all our many activ- ities including the rallies, double lunches and the May Festival. All of the wonderful dances and sportnights were under the direction of our Vice President, Roberta Usher. Second Vice President, Bill Jaquysh, was always on hand when needed, ready to help. Neat and efficient minutes were kept by Billie Ching, studentbody secretary. All the money was handled by Bob Niccoles, our studentbody treasurer. Bob set a new record for George Washington by getting 100% in studentbody card sales within three days. The fellow who hung up the banner at all our games, and polished all our many trophies was our Custodian, Bob Ash. Nathan Tom was this term’s Yell Leader. He led the yells at all games and gave George Washington High School the reputation of having the best rooting section in San Francisco. As Athletic Manager, Gene Larson kept up our Sport Bulletin boord, took charge of all game ticket sales, and faithfully reported all sports events to the studentbody. Two types of members compose this service society: the ex-officio members, who are the class presidents,- presidents of organizations, and studentbody officers, and the twelve members who are elected by the ex-officio members. The purpose of this society is to maintain order at activities and in school premises, protect the school banner, colors, and property, and be of service whenever called. Larry Conover presided this term with Ennis McDaniel as last term’s president. 14 The Girls Service Society The Girls’ Service Society was founded when Washington was first opened, ond has done much to maintain the high standards of the school. This group created the Ten Point Code which has become the code of the entire studentbody. It is a symbol of self-government; at George Washington. The girls are elected into the organization on the basis of service, scholarship, citizenship, and recommendation. The G.S.S. is always on duty and is ready at anytime, anywhere to serve in any service capacity. The president lost term was Pat Stauffer; this term it is Connie Valencia. Executive Council George Washington High School, like every other democratic body, has its law- making branch, the Executive Council. The Council hcs as its duties the apportioning of school funds, the passing of by-laws to supplement our Constitution, and the g. ant- ing of awords and honors in the name of the student body. Another important function of the Executive Council is proposing Constitutional amendments. Our revised Constitution, proposed by the Council and accepted by the students, provides for a more truly democratic Council and for Class Committees to share the duty of school self-government. Presided over by the student body president and advised by Miss Selig, the Council makes possible our democratic government. SPRING—Row 1 (toft to right): Sidney lewin. Here too. ot Washington, we have such a democracy, our Washington Cabinet. Originally, the Washington Cabinet was just a group of girls; one from each registry. It worked so well that Mr. Schmaelzle adopted it for the whole school. It acts os an advisory board to the Principal and the Executive Council. The Washington Cabinet meets each Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. in Room 235. Every registry has on elected delegate who takes questions and suggestions from his registry. It is then his duty to bring them to the Cabinet where they ore discussed until on agreement is reached. The results are then reported to the registry by the delegate. Although the Cabinet has no administrative power and con moke no policies, opinions of the student body are brought to an understanding with the faculty, os the Washington Cabinet is a typical cross-section of the student body representing all personalities. The Washington Cabinet gives a means of expressing opinion, clears up misunderstanding, and advises the Executive Council. SPRING—Row 1 (left to right): Dennis Lantermon, Sue Suomelo, Danise Blue. The lightweights followed their big brothers’ example and followed suit. 48 to 7, and 52 to 2. Noel Dietz paced the varsity by placing first in both the diving and 100-yd. back stroke events. In the second league meet, the paddlers hit their stride in not only drubbing Balboa, 56 to 10. but also setting new school records in the process. One of the records set was a 1.50:7 time posted by the 200-yd. relay team consisting of Jose Angel, Lou Rucker. Stan Stewart and Howard Lawrence. The lightweight scores were 48 to 8, and 52 to 3. Meeting a little stiffer competition in Lincoln, the boys faltered temporarily and then sprang back to sweep the meet one. two, three, to retain their un- defeated status. The scores were 38, 2 to 27 2, 48 to 7, and 46 to 9. Galileo fell before the Eagles 52 to 11, 52 to 2. and 50 to 6. The I30’s are defending champs. Written numerically the present record doesn't sound bad. but the loss was to Lowell who is the strongest opponent. This means that we won't have a chance to meet them again and will probably hove to be satisfied with second place. The team, coached by Mrs. Koster and Mr. Reade, consists mainly of Juniors. Here are the starters: In the doubles Tom Conard teams up with Dave Browne and Ted Dahlman teams up with Len Louie. In the singles Eric Speierman, Harold Kopp, Allen Orwitz, Homer Gee and Wallace Tseng are the starters. Golf Team Golf here at Washington has tolcen great strides forward ever since Mr. John Rocky took it under his wing. As this is being written the golf team has already surpassed two teams in the league matches. If the team can get by the always strong Lowell team they will have a clear rood to our school's first Golf championship. The team consists of Jack Bacigulupi, Bob Schnal, Bob Barnard, Walt Sanders and John Sochor. Row 1 (left to right): Bcb Schnal, Walt Sanders. Bob Bornard. Row 2: Charles Pierce, Gil Brunk, John Doty. It is composed of some 250 boys, all of whom are trained in the same manner as are the men of our infantry. The R.O.T.C. Cadet is taught, in his first year, the assembling and disassembling of the Browning auto- matic rifle, the M1 rifle, the carbine, and the forty- five pistol. He is also tought first aid and the correct procedure in marching. As the Cadet continues, he is taught how to read tactical maps and the actual attack. He also learns about leading men during on actual battle. Training Corps Special awards and medals are presented to out- standing Cadets who have excelled in their field. Medals for the outstanding Cadet in each team group, in the batallion, and a miniature saber to the grad- uating Colonel are presented each term. An impressive parade is held in their honor. A rifle team, made up of the Cadets, competes against rifle teams of other schools, each year. Drill teams of each school also compete for trophies and medals. Washington hos ranked high in these compe- titions. George Washington has a right to be very proud of her R.O.T.C. Batallion. This was ac- complished by the construction of a two-story Music Annex, completed in April. The build- ing is located off the Veteran’s Court in the rear of the Audi- torium. Previous to its completion, choral classes were held in a second floor classroom, and the strains of vocal exercises could be heard throughout the school. The orchestra held its classes in a room off the cafeteria, which soon became crowded with instruments, music stands, and aspiring students. Through the long, tedious process of construction we have gained the most spacious and modern of music build- ings. On the first floor, which connects with the orchestra pit, there are accommodations for the orchestra, boys and girls locker rooms, and a music library. The stage of the audi- torium connects with the sec- ond floor, on which we find the choral room, another set of locker rooms, the music history room, and the piano storage room. The completion of this building, the first of its kind, was eagerly awaited, for the annex is an asset to its surroundings os well as concrete evidence of a dream come true. Drama -Spring Many authors have dealt with the theory of traveling into the fourth di- mension. but none have been as success- ful as John Balderston in his most creative writing of “Berkeley Square. “Berkeley Square is a romantic fan- tasy starring Ron Perry as Peter Stand- ish. a young American who wishes to return to the 18th century; Jean Baker as Helen Pettigrew, the girl whom he falls in love with in the past; and other stars are. Stan Church as Tom Pettigrew Shirley Canata as Kate Pettigrew and Marcia Savin as Lady Anne Pettigrew. “Berkeley Square shows how the 18th century was beautiful on the surface although in reality it was dirty and ugl beneath. Eagle Staff Did you know that approxi- mately 100 exchange copies of each issue of the Eaq'e are sent to high schools all over the United States? The Eagle, our school paper is published about every two weeks under the direction of Mr. Wire. A subscription fee of 50c per term, advertising, and help from the student body pay for the Eagle. There are approximately 30 staff members each term. These include Editor; News Editorial, Feature, and Sports Editors and their staffs. There is also a Managing Ed- itor, Advertising Manager, Business Manager, and Circula- tion Managers. The Editors of the Eagle this past year have been Joe Lerer, fall term, and Carole Baskin, spring term. The staff tries its hardest to put out a paper that you will enjoy. Everyone has a specie job whether it's writing for the first page, editorial, feature, or sports page; or if it is just for the business support of the paper. This is your paper, we hope you enjoyed it. JOE LERER Fall Editor CAROLE BASKIN Spring Editor Surveyor Staff Do you realize how this year- book originated? As you quickly glance through it the first time and then later, begin to study it, to look for your pictures and those of your friends, do you ever pause to think of how it was put together? Golden Memories was planned last summer by the fall editor, Amelio Simpson. She did most of the layout and originated many of the new ideas that were used. The work of assembling the pictures and putting the AMELIA SIMPSON Fall Editor book together was done by Earlene Smith, the spring editor. Ii,Everyone on the staff, the writers, the sales staff, the photographers, the advertising staff and the artists have all worked hard so that you may ERLENE SMITH enjoy the 1951 Surveyor, Spring Editor Golden Memories. This is your book, for without you, it would be utterly impossible. It s something to be proud of. to show to your families and friends. Hope you enjoy it! Here at George Washington we have a wide variety of clubs, ranging from The Lettermen's Club to the Future Teachers of America. All types of students may find the club that suits their interests best.. Recently the Scarlet and Grey Society was formed. It is an honor society created for petroling the halls during classes, and for service around the school. The present Lettermen's Society was organized in the spring term of 1951 to promote athletics here at George Washington. Any block winner is eligible to join. Larry Conover was president this last term. For outside activities and good fe'lowship, the stud nts here at Washington find the Y clubs tops. Almost every week there is some activity going on at the 18th Avenue Y. M. C. A. As Mr. Schmaelzle, our principal always soys, You o ly get out of Washington whot you put into it. Students find this very true. If you work hard and ploy hard, you will get the most out of your three years at Washington.
