JACK O'BRIEN President Student Body LOIS CURRIE Vice-President NAT GARIBALDI Tren surer Student lady in Stkide with fu By JACQUELINE THOMPSON The Student Body of George Washington has been devoting itself to the serious business of aiding in the national emergency during the school term just closed. Students were found eager to serve in any capacity, to aid as Auxil- iary firemen, in the Red Cross disaster relief units, and in the sale of war bonds, a field in which the school led all high schools in the city. Symbolizing the youth of San Francisco on the birthday of Colonel Andrew Summers Rowan, Student Body President jack O'Brien, Vice- President Lois Currie, and a color guard from the R.O.T.C., went to the Letterman General Hospital to visit him. Colonel Rowan was the man who carried single-handed a vital message to the rebel Colonel Calixito Garcia in the Cuban jungles during the Spanish-American War. To start the social activities of the term rolling, the traditional Senior- Soph Reception was held in the girls' gym, and served to acquaint the low sophs with the high seniors. During the basketball season bigger and better game rallies were held, with President Jack O'Brien officiating. The social activities were very ably taken care of by Vice-President Lois Currie. One of the big events of the term was the May Fete, held on April 30, and was very successful. The Senior Advisory Committee under the direction of Barbara Schlegel and Edward Smith was very active during the term. The last dance of the term was given by the G.S.S. and Eagle Society. President Jack O'Brien, with his smiling Irish personality, and vivacious Vice-President Lois Currie led the Student Body to greater heights. Hard-working Alice Penna, secretary, took care of the Executive Council minutes, and Treasurer Nat Garibaldi who so ably conducted the sale of Student Body cards, Dick Behrens, custodian, who kept our many trophies in their sparkling condition, and Athletic Manager Ted Harris who so successfully handled the sale of game tickets. Our school spirit was boosted by Head Yell Leader Girard Rhine. Altogether this term has been one of the most successful at George Washington and will always be remembered by the students.
