I-ICDLJSE MANAGER Mr. I-lallman: I have always agreed with you about this, and the old proverb, 'Where there is a will, there is.a way,' is quite applic- able here. A good shower after strenuous exercise is not only healthful, but very neces- sary, a decided step in the right direction, in my estimation, was the introduction of show- ers as well as lockers in the basement of the Franklin Junior High School for Washington I-ligh athletes, Mr. Deamer: I-lave the changes outlined above resulted in an increase in operation expenditures? Mr. I-lallmani No The grade school pu- pils formerly attending Adams, have been distributed among the other adjacent ele- mentary schools without over crowding. And the added expense of using this Annex for high school purposes has been offset to some extent by reduction of rentals to the Y. W. C. A. as well as by a slight decrease in our teaching personnel Mr. Deamer: By the way, Mr. Hallman, do you know what has become of some of our former teachers, and l'd like to hear who has succeeded each? Mr. I-Iallmang Yes, indeed I do, Mr, Deamer, Mr. Theide, our former drafting teacher is now taking post graduate work at Iowa State College at Ames. Mr. Guyott is our new drafting teacher. Miss Lois Mc- Broom, attendant clerk last year, is attend- ing Coe College, Miss Dotson, who taught Speech, was married January I, and is now living in Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Ives, our for- mer teacher in Journalism, was also married, and is residing in Cedar Rapids. I-ler place has been taken by Mrs Gorman. Miss Larson did not return for the fall semester, and Mrs. Torstenson substituted for her until the sec- ond term. Miss Frances MacGregor and Miss Winifred Lillie, both graduates of Wash- ington l-ligh School, are the new clerks. Mr. Deamer: Although I hope that some day we'll have a new building, I am well satisfied with the improvements which have enabled us to accommodate more pupils com- fortablyf' I5

DIVISICN MANAGER l Mr, Deameri f'l have asked you to come to my office to talk over plans for Washing- ton l-ligh School, As you know, under pres- ent conditions, possibilities for a new building seem remote The school enrollment, how- ever, is increasing, and we must therefore devise ways and means of utilizing our space to the utmost, and improving conditions in the old building. Have you any suggestions to offer in regard to changes in the curricu- lum which might alleviate existing conditions? Mr. l-lallman: Yes, Mr. Deamer, we have been giving this feature considerable time and thought, in fact some changes have already been effected, and others are being planned for introduction next fall. For in- stance, Speech has been discontinued, An- cient l-listory is to be abolished in the ninth grades of iunior high schools, and Business Arithmetic and Geography in the tenth grade of senior high school. On the other hand, World History is to be introduced as o new subiect and a required course for all pupils in the tenth grade, Of course these changes will not remedy conditions as to crowding, but it is thought they will be beneficial to the school at large. Mr, Deamer: What do you think of using the old Adams School building as an Annex for relieving congestion in the main build- ing? Mr. l-lallman: l think it has helped great- ly, The addition of the eleven rooms at the Annex has not only increased the total num- ber of classrooms, but has also permitted the enlargement of some of the smaller rooms in the main building, as well as the abolish- ment of the small, so-called 'pocket' rooms, which were a fire hazard on account of their having no direct exit to the hallways. These changes also made it possible to transfer the band and orchestra practice from the Y. W. C A. to Washington, and all in all the entire building is a safer place to study in. Mr. Deameri l have always felt our situa- tion in regard to sanitary showers has been inadequate. What changes have been made to improve this? i4
