COMING ATTRACTIONS Sophomores I I IIII W PARAMOUNT L CAFETERIA GYM ' CDN WASH i N GTO YWCA MANAGERS DIVISICN MANAGER l Mr, Deameri f'l have asked you to come to my office to talk over plans for Washing- ton l-ligh School, As you know, under pres- ent conditions, possibilities for a new building seem remote The school enrollment, how- ever, is increasing, and we must therefore devise ways and means of utilizing our space to the utmost, and improving conditions in the old building. Have you any suggestions to offer in regard to changes in the curricu- lum which might alleviate existing conditions? Mr. l-lallman: Yes, Mr. Deamer, we have been giving this feature considerable time and thought, in fact some changes have already been effected, and others are being planned for introduction next fall. For in- stance, Speech has been discontinued, An- cient l-listory is to be abolished in the ninth grades of iunior high schools, and Business Arithmetic and Geography in the tenth grade of senior high school. On the other hand, World History is to be introduced as o new subiect and a required course for all pupils in the tenth grade, Of course these changes will not remedy conditions as to crowding, but it is thought they will be beneficial to the school at large. Mr, Deamer: What do you think of using the old Adams School building as an Annex for relieving congestion in the main build- ing? Mr. l-lallman: l think it has helped great- ly, The addition of the eleven rooms at the Annex has not only increased the total num- ber of classrooms, but has also permitted the enlargement of some of the smaller rooms in the main building, as well as the abolish- ment of the small, so-called 'pocket' rooms, which were a fire hazard on account of their having no direct exit to the hallways. These changes also made it possible to transfer the band and orchestra practice from the Y. W. C A. to Washington, and all in all the entire building is a safer place to study in. Mr. Deameri l have always felt our situa- tion in regard to sanitary showers has been inadequate. What changes have been made to improve this? i4 I-ICDLJSE MANAGER Mr. I-lallman: I have always agreed with you about this, and the old proverb, 'Where there is a will, there is.a way,' is quite applic- able here. A good shower after strenuous exercise is not only healthful, but very neces- sary, a decided step in the right direction, in my estimation, was the introduction of show- ers as well as lockers in the basement of the Franklin Junior High School for Washington I-ligh athletes, Mr. Deamer: I-lave the changes outlined above resulted in an increase in operation expenditures? Mr. I-lallmani No The grade school pu- pils formerly attending Adams, have been distributed among the other adjacent ele- mentary schools without over crowding. And the added expense of using this Annex for high school purposes has been offset to some extent by reduction of rentals to the Y. W. C. A. as well as by a slight decrease in our teaching personnel Mr. Deamer: By the way, Mr. Hallman, do you know what has become of some of our former teachers, and l'd like to hear who has succeeded each? Mr. I-Iallmang Yes, indeed I do, Mr, Deamer, Mr. Theide, our former drafting teacher is now taking post graduate work at Iowa State College at Ames. Mr. Guyott is our new drafting teacher. Miss Lois Mc- Broom, attendant clerk last year, is attend- ing Coe College, Miss Dotson, who taught Speech, was married January I, and is now living in Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Ives, our for- mer teacher in Journalism, was also married, and is residing in Cedar Rapids. I-ler place has been taken by Mrs Gorman. Miss Larson did not return for the fall semester, and Mrs. Torstenson substituted for her until the sec- ond term. Miss Frances MacGregor and Miss Winifred Lillie, both graduates of Wash- ington l-ligh School, are the new clerks. Mr. Deamer: Although I hope that some day we'll have a new building, I am well satisfied with the improvements which have enabled us to accommodate more pupils com- fortablyf' I5 ASSISTANT MANAGERS MISS JANET ARIE - - Librarian MR DONALD E BAUM - Voice MR, R LYLE BONI-IAM - - BioIogy MR A G BOWNE - V - Chemistry MISS NELL G. Bill Gray: The class day program was the best I've seen it l do say it as shouldn't, Mrs. Green: 'fThe idea ot imitating a broadcast was a clever way to bring in the variety at things you had on the program. Bill: That night club scene was realistic, wasn't it? Ot course the palms helped a lot, and the dancing added to the attraction. Mrs. Green: Everyone enjoyed the comic opera in the second act. There was a lot ot musical talent in your class. Bill: Yes, several ot its members vvon high honors in state music contests. But music wasn't the only tield we were active in, Mrs, Greeni Indeed not. You have been active in athletics, dramotics, and declama- tory work, too. Billi Wasn't the senior play well done? Those who took part got splendid notices in the paper. Mrs. Green: The class banquet at the Roosevelt was a gay affair. Didn't you all regret that it was your last meeting togeth- er?l' Billi Yes, but we are all looking forward to successful careers in the tuture. The eve- ning vve received our diplomas will be remem- bered by all ot us. 'lWe realize that much ot our success as a senior class has been due to our advisers this last year-you, Mrs. Green, and Miss Boyack, Miss Whaley, and Miss Chaney. 20 DONALD M. Fred K.: That's right, and later, despite his size, Uncle Tom, the old negro, did a neat disappearing act. Bill C.: That was after things got so mixed up I couldn't straighten them out. One thing is certain, David Barry made a good peppery gentleman and Gage was as typic- ally Irish as he had been dumb in the Senior Play. Louis l-loltman Well, first of all, under the leadership of Mr Peterson, we held our annual Inter-Class tournament, Preparation for the tournament started in the latter part of September and the first debates of the tourney started on November seventh, Thir- ty-two students, representing all six classes took part in the debates, After many hotly contested battles the semi-finals were reach- ed. The semi-finalrsts were the teams com- prisingi Robert Waples-William Jackson rep- resenting the lOB's, Culver Brooks-Bernard Kehoe representing the llB's, Warren Carr- John Blomguist of the l2B class, and Nor- man Berg-Don Wilson of the l2A class. Eliot Waplesi l won't forget the final de- bate for the trophy. lt was a good one. Eugene l-lawkinson and Bob Lamson held up the l2B honors in the finals, while Culver Brooks and Bernard Kehoe represented the llB's, After a heated debate, the llB's emerged victorious and as the result hold undisputed possession of the cup. George Koehni What happened after the tournament? John Blomguisti After the tournament the first debate sauad consisting of Bernard Kehoe, David Stookey, Jack Palmer, Warren Carr, John Blomguist, Norman Berg, Donald Wilson, Eugene l-lawkinson, and Bob Lamson was chosen by Mr. Peterson. Don Wilsoni By the way, do you remem- ber the debate assembly between lowa Uni- versity and Iowa State College? lt was liked by everyone and was the subiect of conversa- tion around the school for days afterward. We've phoned them, and sent them cards, and got- ten their assignments for them, Madge: Well, I thought the most fun came when we decorated the Christmas tree in the library, Then we took the same tree and four or five hundred gifts from the stu- Adent body to the Community I-louse Martha Speaking of good deeds, we know the families to whom the I-lome Rooms took the Thanksgiving baskets appreciated them a great deal, Madge. And wasn't the auction sale fun? The best part of it was that we earned enough rncney to pay for our Cedar picf tures. Malcolm Metcalf, Well, fellows, l'm in- clined to believe that the Council has done a lot From the first meeting it was on its toes. Why, the first business to be brought up at the meeting that day was to appoint somebody to take the toys from the Christmas tree in the library to the Community House, Ned: Doesn't that alter your opinion a bit, Culver? Malcolm: The following meetings, every other Friday noon at the Y, M C.
