Foreword ways lriendl5'. Among the early settlers and the lndians the pipe of peace was smoked, and the children ol' the two races contested with one another in various sports. Robert lifllis and William Abbe, the lirst who set- tled in this prairie wilderness, walked here to set up a trading post and to distribute government supplies to the Winnehagoes and the Meskwakies. These tribes, who pitched their tepees along the river to tish and hunt. held their council meetings in two places well known to boys and girls ol' Cedar Rapids, High Rock up the river and Eagles Nest on lndian Creek. Today that hrst settlement is a prosperous city. 'l he primitive little mill has been sup- planted by the Quaker Oats of world re- nown. The prairie schooner and the steam- hoat have given place to the automobile and the airplane, But though Cedar Rapids has grown and expanded, there remains unal- tered the spirit of the pioneer-that sturdy spirit' which overcomes every obstacle. The purpose of our book is to show hy contrasting the conditions and the activities of those early years with our experiences of todav that our work, our sports, our advan- tages have taken on an added meaning. :X ,..- lvl?
