l Foreword INIETY years ago a log tavern on the banks of the Red Cedar proved to be the beginning of a settlement which de- veloped into Cedar Rapids. The contrasting activities of the years from lS30 to 1929 bring vividly to us the opportunities which we are taking for granted today. The land of the prairie grass and tiger lily, the grey wolf and the deer, the Sacs, Fox, and loway Indians has changed to a city of beautiful homes, inviting parks. impressive concrete bridges, and a bristling sky line of factory chimneys, and tall buildings. ln I8-fl the settlement gained dignity by being surveyed and named Rapids City. The erection of a crude dam in the following year made milling an industry, and soon a thriving village had developed. The steam- boat bringing supplies up the river, and the coming of the first railroad in IS59 further assured progress. The first public school was established in I8-13. and the first private one in l850. Washington School was built on the site of the present high school in 1856.
