The work of the Mixed Chorus is exemplihed by the choral exhibition at Christmas and at contests. ln history of music, note books are made correlat- ing music, art, and poetryg these are attractive as well as valuable. The fact that the voice classes this year are larger than ever before shows the interest of the student body in music. Here solos are studied and opportunity given for public appearances at Musical Teas during the year. In the past years the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs have won both the state or midwest championships. This year they will represent Washington High at the district contest at Waterloo. lf they are successful there, as we hope they will be, they will compete for the state championship at Iowa City. The band and orchestra comprise the other sections of our music department. The orchestra has, on several occasions, played for the luncheon clubs of this city. lt has also given a concert to defray the expense of sending its representatives to play in the National Symphony Orchestra. Both these musical bodies have dis- tinguished themselves in the past in state and national meets. M., graduate of the Royal Academy of Music of London and the director of our band and orchestra, has had three honors come to him this year from the National Supervisors' Conference. He not only has had eight of his players chosen to play in the National high school symphony orchestra, and been appointed one of the tive judges to test out these young people, but Major Doetzel has also been chosen a member of the State Advisory Com- mittee for the conference. The appointment of eight members of our orchestra to play in the National high school symphony orchestra is a tribute to their ability and to Major Doetzel's talent. Representatives are selected from all high schools in the United States, chosen for their musical ability. They will play before the National Supervisors' Conference at Detroit, April l6, and will be directed by Gabrilowitsch, leader of the Detroit symphony orchestra. Cedar Rapids can rightfully be proud that of the two hundred musicians sent to Detroit, eight were selected from its high schools, seven from Washington and one from Grant. Those who have brought this honor to us are Mabel Graepler, Margaret Clark, Mildred Owen, jean Lindsey, and Catherine Maloney, playing on the string bass: Max Kornitsky and Henry Vysko- cil, violinistsg and jack Deamer, cornetist.
