uv- V- 1- V-r-v - Dear Boys and Girls, There was once a time when any seventeen year old could predict with a reasonable degree of certainty what his life would be like ten, twenty or even fifty years later. This was somewhat true in your grand- father's generation and even when your parents were your age, it is no longer true today. Who can be certain today what the results will be of the inventions, the medical research, the space exploration that lie ahead? Who knows what changes will take place in terms of iobs or leisure time or family life? There are a few adventurous souls who find this exciting and exhilarating. There are many more who find it easier to accept any happening rather than think about it. But for most of us, there is a desire to plan our work and our lives with some assurance as to the future. If we fight change, we will be acting as did the workers in the early days of the Industrial Revolution who destroyed the machines that they thought would take away their iobs-a practice, incidentally, that still exists today even though in other forms. The future holds every promise of better iobs and ever higher in- comes with all that this means for a happy life if we can take advan- tage of the changes to come. l know of only one way to prepare for this and that is through increased and never-ending education. A college training can be of tremendous value, but it is not indispensable where so many other opportunities for self-education exist. We must have the knowledge that will allow us to understand the changes as they take place-more important, we must have the mental training that will make it possible to adiust to new approaches and new demands. It is this knowledge and this training that are the out- comes of education. It is very desirable to have the specific skills required by the iobs and needs of the moment but along with this must go the training to meet the demands of the future, whatever they may be. Sincerely, Henry T. Hillson Principal
