This was somewhat true in your grand- father's generation and even when your parents were your age, it is no longer true today. Who can be certain today what the results will be of the inventions, the medical research, the space exploration that lie ahead? Who knows what changes will take place in terms of iobs or leisure time or family life? There are a few adventurous souls who find this exciting and exhilarating. There are many more who find it easier to accept any happening rather than think about it. But for most of us, there is a desire to plan our work and our lives with some assurance as to the future. If we fight change, we will be acting as did the workers in the early days of the Industrial Revolution who destroyed the machines that they thought would take away their iobs-a practice, incidentally, that still exists today even though in other forms. The future holds every promise of better iobs and ever higher in- comes with all that this means for a happy life if we can take advan- tage of the changes to come. l know of only one way to prepare for this and that is through increased and never-ending education. A college training can be of tremendous value, but it is not indispensable where so many other opportunities for self-education exist. We must have the knowledge that will allow us to understand the changes as they take place-more important, we must have the mental training that will make it possible to adiust to new approaches and new demands. It is this knowledge and this training that are the out- comes of education. It is very desirable to have the specific skills required by the iobs and needs of the moment but along with this must go the training to meet the demands of the future, whatever they may be. Sincerely, Henry T. Hillson Principal ACU lTY Wisdom is the key lo all galesg Teachers are the light fha! show the way Guide us to the apex of all life, Teaching us to dream, lo work, lo play. It tries to induce people to think and to convince them of various doctrines of life. Poetry is one of the freest forms of expression. We are presenting a section of poetry. It is as integral a part of school as any academic subiect and a very integral part of life. CHERRY TREE Every afternoon the Cherry Tree Office reverberated with the sounds of typing, rustling of paper, frantic last minute corrections, and lively debate among the editors. However, beneath this seemingly chaotic state, the staff of our school paper was very success- ful. l lt's a miracle!-How do we do it? -they've been heard to exclaim after the distribution of each issue.l This year's Cherry Tree was an outstanding feature at George Washington, with the faculty assistance of Mrs. Cascione. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION The Student Government Organization may perhaps be considered the most important single unit in George Washington High School. This statement is substantiated by the fact that the 5.G.O. forms the actual backbone of our school. The main theory behind this organization is that student leadership should be encouraged. By ena- bling the students to regulate and sponsor lunder Mr. Rubin's supervisionl the affairs ofthe school, and by allowing them to choose their own officers, valuable experience in leadership was gained. 27 ,.. Our minds become hazy when we think about the differences between congruent and similar tri- angles, and we have already forgotten many of the verb coniugations we learned in our French or Span- ish classes. When a lower termer looks toward us with admiring eyes for some help with his history homework, we turn our noses up and say, 'l've taken the Regents already. l'm above that stuff now. Or perhaps someone more modest says, Well, I would like to help you, but you know history was never my best subject.
