ilu emuriam RR MARTYN The CHERRY TRLe and HATCHhT staffs were deeply grreved to learn that therr beloved frrend and faculty advrser Mr Burr Martyn passed away on March 17 1955 as the result of a sudden heart attack The entrre faculty as well as both publrcatron staffs was shocked rnto a mournful srlence The rnevrtable event so hard to belreve had hnally happened Mr Martyn a famrlrar figure at George Washrngton for almost two decades retrred at the end of the fall term rn February to enjoy a well earned rest So devoted was he to hrs yob as moderator of the CHERRY TREL and HATcHET that even after hrs retrrement he returned to school to rnsure the smooth runnrng of our atfarrs Strll eager to help he met several trmes durrng February and March wrth the HATCHLT staff for needed consultatrons on prrntrng lrterary rtems prctures and the busrness matters assocrated wrth publrcatrons It rs at trmes lrke these that we become aw are of the rnadequacy of words Too often words sound hollow rn therr attempt to express a great loss We can lost a beloved and surely rrreplaceable frrend advrser and companron Mr Martyn easrly won the respect and admrratron of all w ho had the good fortune to know hrm He w as a teacher s teacher especrally noted for hrs unusual love and knowledge of poetry and yournalrsm He was known for hrs qurck wrt and eagerness to help He was a rare man As a student at Columbra College Mr Martyn rmpressed classmates wrth hrs abrlrty on the football freld As a teacher at George Washrngton he rmpressed hrs students wrth hrs everlastrng devotron to therr rnterests Mr Martyn rn sprte of or perhaps because of hrs stalwart form w as as tender a man as one could desrre He had all the frne qualrtres to w hrch one could possrbly asprre To lvlr Martyn we dedrcate thrs book It rs a volume started under hrs gurd ance but completed wrthout hrm We trust that rt meets the hrgh standards tow ard whrch he at all trmes drrected hrs energres We are grateful that we knew hrm We are certarn that we shall never forget hrm B U .
