Gl-ll CIH W S ACADEMIC YEAR 1952 53 was a , memorable one rn the school s history rt was a year filled xxrth excrtement and accomplishment For one thing every type of extra curricular activity xx as available and membership rn all clubs was constantly increasing There was also a variety of sports open to both boys and girls rncludrng the new boys soccer team whrch was immensely popu lar and made an envrable record And finally there was the excitement of student electrons special assemblies and senror week It was great fun' STUDENT ELECTIONS G O electrons had been run off in june of 1952 and early rn September the winning team sxx ung into action It consisted of the following Ronald Green President Costa Constantine Vice Presr dent and Marilyn Hersh Secretary together with an Executive Council on which among others xx ere Clifford Wersse joan Greenxxald jo Ann LaRussa Roberta Meyer and Shirley Bodenstem They were formally introduced by Mr Henry at the first A Assembly and President Ronald Green made his first speech rn office coming out strongly for 1002 membership in G O Close on the heels of the G O activities came the electrons for senior class officers The folloxx mg xxere xxrnners Socrates Constantmou Presr dent Evangeline Lmardos Treasurer and Mary jane Lindo and Eva Bloch Secretaries EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIXITII s Of the many signs that the school s Fall term xx as going along successfully none xx as more con vrncrng than the manner rn xx hrch the various stu dent organizations xx ere performing their Jobs First in the field xx as the Program Committee much of xx hose xx orlt had been done during the last xxeelx or txxo of the preceding term The xx orlx had been unusually difficult because of an unexpected increase in the Fall term registration but the Pro gram Committee did a very successful rob and much of this success was due to the experience and ability of the committee s txxo faculty advisers Mr joseph Kutcher and Mr William Kenney Meantrme the school s traditional honor society of Arista had begun 1ts program under the drrec tion of its new officers who were Barbara Levine Leader David Rodvren Vice Leader Susie Lieber Secretary and the usual committees headed by the follovxmg chairmen Susan Schlesinger Fanny Sid Barbara Blow Mmdelle Kaplan Marlorre Garfiel Victoria Vasrlescu Arthur Baron and Rita Kaplan Before long the Arista xxas staging its regular Arista Assembly at which it greeted forty four nevx comers The assembly program xxas under the direction of Faculty Adviser Miss Moran wrth Mr Gloss and Miss Spaldrng aiding rn the conduct of the musical part of the program There xxas an Address of Welcome by the leader of Arista Barbara Levine Then came an unusual feature called Explanation of Emblem rn which the par ticrpants were Torchbearer Ronald Green Scholarship Leona Wrlenslxy Service Zena Keltz Leadership Alma Cerra and Charac ter Judy Freedman The Arista pledge xx as then administered to the nexv members by Susie Schles rnger and there xx as a brief speech by Principal Dr Flredner xx ho in turn introduced the guest speaker Mr Victor Larsen of Barnard College Vlfhrle these various GO and club actrxrtres xvere proceeding merrily an ex en merrrer affair had taken place as the senrors elected txxenty three Celebrrtles The official Senior Scholarship List rn the meantime had been issued from the office of the Semor Grade Adxrser Mrs Louise ORourlxe On this list the first quarter showed marks for sexen terms averaging from 78 to 9551 The three leaders on the list xx ere Mmdelle Kap lan 95 70 Vrxren Klernman 92 25 and Fanny Sid 91 87 All three of these honor students xvere all round Xvashrngtomans xx ho had been actixe in extra curricular affairs ATHLETICS Meantrme rt had been obvrous that another ban 1 - - - , . . 1 . , , . , . . . , , 1 - . 1 I f - 1 ' - 1 Y . , 9 7 7 ' 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 , . . - V. . . . .
