NX X, X,Jf c is iim ll' EDITORML Education makes a people easy to lead but dlfficult to drrve easy to govern but impossible to enslave HE ABOVE XVORDS are attrrbuted to Lord Brougham famous BflflSh statesman of the nrneteenth century They explain neatly why a free democratic society such as ours places great stress on education The education we mean con sxsts of free access to all the facts and opmrons rn all the fields of sc1ence art and phrlosophy and not just a llmrted access determlned by a governrng group that thinks of educatron chrefly as a means of propaganda The use to vyhrch the machinery of education rs put has much to do yyrth a peoples faith rn an education and rn the goy ernrng group that controls rt If people are confident that the educatlonal rnfor matron they are recelvrng rs unbrased sincere and reasonably complete they yyrll rn turn have confi dence rn the leaders yy ho supply the information and yyrll follovy them rn peace and yy ar even to the hnal sacrifice of life itself On the other hand rf they doubt the smcerrty of the rnformatron belng gryen them they yyrll folloyy therr self appolnted leaders yyeakly and only under strrct compulslon and yxrtual enslayement It rs plam that today yye lrye rn a yyorld that IS sharply d1v1ded on the basis of tyyo conflrctrng concepts of educatron one a complete education freely arrrved at and the other a lrmrted education carefully controlled for prop aganda purposes The battlefields of Korea and the varrous areas of tenslon throughout the world are brrngrng this rssue sharply into focus Meantrme we students at George Washington have no doubts as to the type of education yye are recervrng rt rs a free educatron determined by democratic processes and desrgned to grye us com plete and truthful mformatron on which yve can base our dec1s1ons and to this great herxtage of free educatron we are ready to dedrcate our ener gnes our fortunes and rf necessary our lrves But though the busrness of gettrng an education rs a serious one rn the kmd of world we face today yye have been happy to discover that the process yy as not entlrely a grrm affarr It has rncluded lots of fun and excltement such thrngs as the thrill of running for student offices belonging to clubs and teams and takrng part rn the unending round of escapades and practical jokes For all of rt we are Indeed grateful and we herewith express our thanks and apprecratron to the school that made rt possrble In particular we pay a final trxbute to our faculty for its splendid work to our Prrncrpal Dr Leonard J Flredner for hrs far sighted competent leadershrp to the Deans and Grade Advrsers for their careful gurd ance and last but not least to our teachers for thenr patrence and fortitude rn seeing that we alyy ays got the best and did the best we could To them all a final salute we may leave you but we shall never forget you' .yx l r n y All y. 1, y I 1 A-1 ly ' ir ii . ll r 1 -' .
