Pauline Newman SPRING I943 Awake, and hear 'I'he summer's firsf refrain Thaf fhrobs in Na+ure's hearf. Behold fhe flighi' Of sun besprinkled wings: fhe ripening lane Of pefals laughing in fhe golden lighf. And hear fhe dreamy founfain serenade The vale. Look well along fhe leaf crowned bough Thai' calmly suns ifs drooping hair, besprayed By flighfy April's ever fearful brow. Wifh whal' precision Nal'ure's friumph dawned, Recall 'rhe whifened shroud on fields sfripped bare Of seed, fhe branches cringing al' fhe faunf Of winfer whisfling fhrough fhe burmal air. Away wifh sorrow on a flicker's wing As fhrough fhis field of winfer sfeals fhe spring! Pauline Newman THE WAGES OF SIN ARE DETENTIONS Though fhe sun may be burning ouf fhere in fhe disfance, All fhe chemical changes inside merely bore me. SUFQWVE THE SYMPLEGADES From: Jason and lhe Golden Fleece A+ Jupifer's command fwo rocks As huges as any rocks could be, Were placed upon fhe surging waves- Two mighfy perils of fhe sea. They formed a mons+er's gaping moufh, An eager moufh kepf open wide .lusf waifing-wailing for some prey To enferg hope fo leave denied. No choice befween fhe vicfims made, Mankind, or bird, or beasf was doomed. lfs lagged laws no mercy knew, For deafh o'er every porfal loomed. No voice fo say- Beware! beware! The floaling rocks obsfrucl' your course To Colchis, easf of fhis Black Sea, Because a god has used his force. No means fo cross befween +he rocks, No help derived from gods fhrough pleas, For life ifself ne'er wenl' beyond The clufches of Symplegades. Beryl Hunfe THE OLD STORY You declare your love in glowing lerms, You swear fhis fime if's real, You fhink you'll furn my woman's head Wifh all your earnesf zeal, You press my hand upon your hear? To hear 'l'he mighfy beal' Wifh firmesf expecfalions fhaf You'll-sweep me off my feet Your 'technique is 'rerrific and Your line I iusf adore il+'s iusf a shame you've fold 'lhe same To fhirfy-fhousand morel. JaneH'e Goldberg l fhink fha? I shall never see A yearbook picfure look like me. Perhaps, and fhis l greafly fear, l'll have a beH'er one nexf year. Charles Munoz A FLEETING MOMENT Above fhe ken of brooding fhoughf, A lighl' appears-a beacon sfar, My hearl' Iifis up wifh ioy fo greef This silenf sfranger from afar. l hold, l grasp, I pledge fo keep, Bul' like a swallow in ifs fIigh+, lf preens ifs wings and soars on high And flies away beyond my sighf. Beryl Hunfe T O D A N T E Noi' Vergil, Livy can compare lheir fame To you whose words have sealed fhe fafe of kings, While pleb and genfle clamor your acclaim, On Mounl' Olympus, Zeus your praises sings. Hell's learned men wifhsfood your mighfy wrafh As did fhe enemies you ne'er forgave, You hafed all who dared fo block your pafh On earfhg in Hell each served you as .a slave. Now love, revealed al' lasf behind dark clouds Bursl' forfh in glory, casfing hafe aside, And Danfe, fhough cool deafh his love enshrouds, ln heaven, fakes fair Beafrice as bride. Thus love unfhreads all earfhly sfrife and pain, And weaves a fairer iusfice in her reign. Irene Gsovski ROMANCE When Casanova meefs his HenrieHe Thai' modern lady grabs a cigareffe, And smiling sweefly of his earnesl gaze, She coyly whispers, Have you gof a blaze? lnanely grinning al' his lady love, He reaches for a mafch wifhin his glove. She burdens him wifh bundles, purse and books, And grabs her compacl' 'lo adiusf her looks. His hearf is pounding wifh a mighfy roar, As on fhey wander +o fhe candy sfore. The Fascisf TighTing men, unskilled in sporTs, did noT have The insTincTs of combaT ThaT can only be used in peaceTime in clean games. While engaging in agreeable recreaTion, American soldiers have learned how To Take deTeaT and come back To win decisive vicTory. Now ThaT The war is on, some skepTics sTill say ThaT we should give up all sporTs and Turn To more serious maTTers more direcTly connecTed wTih The war eTTorT. We, The youTh, and TuTure defenders oT our counTry, however, believe ThaT sporTs are direcTly linked wiTh The successful TerminaTion of The war. Here aT George WashingTon, beTore The war, we had gradually relinquished our aThleTic Teams unTil we had buT Three leTT. As soon as The U. S. enTered The conTlicT we began To demand increased aThleTic parTicipaTion. We esTablished inTramural sporTs, which while lacking in The lusTre oT inTerscholasTic acTiv- iTies, allowed more To parTake in Them. We realized ThaT The essenTial parT of sporTs was building ourselves up physically and menTally by playing cleanly and hard. Now, upon leaving High School, we will be more able To serve our counTry, since we, Too, wish To Take our places in The armed services or on The home TronT. We will serve wiTh The confidence ThaT sporTs have Trained us in The rudimenTs of boTh Teamwork, which is necessary in This greaT era oT mechanizaTion and coordinaTion of power, and individualiTy, needed in leadership and iniTiaTive. We, The TuTure leaders of This naTion and The world, should be indeed Thankful we live in a counTry of sporTlovers, because, in The long run, The Tremendous experience and upliTT in morale has made our naTion invincible. SporTs have been, and shall always be, The ToundaTion Tor VicTory. We found ouT all The informaTion concerning The encyclopedias, The Brifish and American Dicfionaries of Biographies, The card caTalogue, and Who's Who in America. We were all fainTly bored by explanaTions abouT The lasT of These. Heavens! Every- one knew iT's a biographical dicTionary of famous living Americans. The only hope for ThaT book would be The addiTion of new names. If we were wriTing The lisT, iT would include all The names our parenTs have heard since lasT February. The book migh+ sTarT as iT does now, buT The B's would cerfainly have a new name-Irene Behrens, class of June, '43, firsT baby To wear heels and lipsfick. Under C you'd find John Capsis, WashingTon's nominee for This year's Oscar, and Bill Crowley, Apollo The Second. EdiTh ETTman would share wiTh ArisTa secrefary, Miriam Jacobs, The TiTle of Newspaper Woman of The Term. There would be Ricky, ll'd love To call him Dicky, if I daredl Friedenberg, leader in sTudenT governmenT, Talenfed DoTTy Persh, and poeT-laureaTe Pauline Newman. Miriam Kerans, successor To BernhardT, Joseph Leo, mosT popular boy, and Barbara Davies, besT-dressed, would have Their places. The M's would include AniTa Manel, able G.O. secrefary, Marilyn McNally land her address and Telephone numberl, Howard Monderer, leader of The honor socieTy, and AniTa Morrissey, senior class secreTary and mosT popular girl. Chris Pappas would be lisTed for her sweeT disposifion, John Kelly and HarrieT Cohn for Their copies of Mona Lisa. Eddie Von Halle, presidenf of The senior class, would no doubT have many paragraphs afTer his name, The lasT phrase reading: One of The Ten recipienfs in The U.
