Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1956 volume:

The Compass, 1956 George Washington High School Alexandria, Virginia l WAFT Before you begin a mad dash through this book, stop and think a minute. Are you going to plow through its pages just for the pictures of yourself and your friends, to see who is photogenic and who looks positively silly, or to see who appears on the most pages? Or is it the memories of days gone by in a classroom or on an athletic field that you're looking for? In the '56 Compass some of these days of fun, excitement, and test-cramming are captured for you—from a bird's eye view! Something new THE FORWARD LOOK - The long, sleek lines of the new school appeal to all viewers. CEILING UNLIMITED - Patrice McCarthy and Pat Baker seem lost in the vast, bookless library. THE NEWCOMER Extra interest arose in G.W.'s future competitor and friend, Francis Hammond High School, at its April dedication. SNEAK PREVIEW - Bucky Bourne, Pete Latimer, Jo Smith, and Dixie Haislip find F.H.H.S. very intriguing. Someone special Milt Mildred E. Bane ABILITY UNLIMITED — Min Bane instructs Darlene Moore, Phyllis Evans, Joan Burch, Janice Jefferson, and Nancy Lee Hanson, members of the A Cappella, in preparation for the District Festival. DEDICATION Miss Mildred Bone holds both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Illinois-Wesleyan University and a professional diploma from the Teachers College of Columbia University. Her summers are spent perfecting her musical technique by working with many well-known musicians at workshops. Among those she attended between 1951 and 1955, were the Virginia State Workshop at Massanetta and another under the direction of Fred Waring. Since her arrival here at G.W. from Newport News and her advancement to the head of the Music Department, the enrollment in this department has more than doubled. DEDICATEE AT WORK - Miss Ban. directs the A Cappella Choir during an assembly commemorating Easter. During the holiday the group also sang for the Women's Club of Alexandria. 5 Ah, how easy it is to tell a senior from the rest. CLASSES 7 Take a million friendly greetings WEll ON THEIR WAY — Senior itart on their grand march on graduation night. PARIS IN A DAY — Putting up mural for the Junior-Senior Prom are Regina Burton, Barbara Lemmon, and Nancy Richardton. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The Spirit of '56 has been many places this year wherever a single member of the senior class could be found! Spirit was especially high in the spring when the class play, Diploma Daze, took place. The comedy, featuring flashbacks on events typical of the senior year, was written and directed by class members. However, as important as these things are, the class left more than laughter and happy memories behind. They left encouragement and help to those who would follow them. One outstanding aid was a $400 scholarship which will be awarded to a '57 graduate. A second gift, with yet another thought in mind, was a donation for flowers for the memorial for World War II veterans. The third was the customary farewell gift, in this case, the presentation of two flags to replace those in the auditorium. Seniors gave backing, spirit, to G.W.—and received in return an unforgettable year! 8 SENIOR SURVEY — Officer! of the senior class are: Mr. Lindsey, Sponsor; Johnny Nottingham, Secretary-Treasurer; Nancy Moncure, January Chairman; and Martha Duke, President. Absent from the picture, Alan Bugg, Vice-President. MARTHA DUKE Senior Class President SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Even from a bird's eye view one could see the senior class officers working at their task of leading 270 seniors. The main leader was, of course, the president, Martha Duke. Presiding over senior class meetings, portraying Mr. Pruet on Senior Day, and setting up committees for various activities were a few of her jobs. Besides being class prexie, she was also head majorette, president of the Quill and Palm, and a member of the Music Club. Vice-President Allan Bugg took over the aforesaid tasks when Martha was absent, besides helping her accomplish them when she was present. He was Quill and Palm treasurer and a varsity football player. John Nottingham was appointed class secretary by Martha and Allan. He kept minutes of class meetings and was chairman of the Pep Club, assistant editor of the Compass, and historian of Quill and Palm. NANCY MONCURE January Chairman SANDRA SMITH Secretary of Jan. FACULTY 67 From where they sit MR. PRUET CITY AT A GLANCE — Mr. Pruet points out the new high school boundary of Alexandria The very important job of running G.W. belongs to its principal, Mr. Edgar G. Pruet; however, he is very ably assisted by Mrs. Josephine Tolbert and Mr. Robert W. Garner, Dean of Girls and Dean of Boys, respectively. It is on them that the proper functioning of discipline and general school affairs depends. While not busy as G.W.'s principal, Mr. Pruet devotes himself to civic affairs. He is an active member of the Kiwanis Club and an associate teacher of business and professional men at the Baptist Church. The principal spends some of his spare time caring for his fish, which he has just recently acquired as a hobby, and reading. Somehow, Mr. Pruet finds time to crowd a few more activities into an already busy schedule. He is a member of the Administrative Council Repetition of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, which chooses schools from Texas to Virginia for accreditation; and as if this isn't enough, he is the chairman of the State committee, also. Patrick, Professor of Military Science and Tactics, the students and faculty of G.W. have lost a great man, friend, and leader. Born into a pioneer family of Charleston, South Carolina, Colonel Patrick received his education in the public schools of that city and graduated from The Citadel in 1917. He entered the Artillery Corps of the Army where he saw service in Panama, and the Philippines. Later he taught at The Citadel, his alma mater, from 1934 to 1939; but because of illness, he retired from the Army in 1941, and in 1942 came to G.W. to head the cadet corps. From a straggly, undisciplined, half-uniformed group. Colonel Patrick developed the corps into a superbly-drilled, prize-winning unit of young men and women. Under his leadership, the corps won many trophies, medals, and other honors. Even after his passing, his spirit will still linger as an inspiration to others. The memory of his leadership, sense of humor, loyalty to the school and to the corps, and his ready willingness to help will always be treasured in the hearts of those who knew him. 140 At-ten-tion!
