AS'.UM AV e Compass, A9SS George V asV ' r g or HvgVv ScVvoo Mexancina,V rg n a Students' memories that linger on Our Town FOREWORD In the midst of our progress, we are reminded to look down the corridor of yesteryear, for 1955 is the Twentieth anniversary of the founding of George Washington High School. The first G.W. students laid a strong foundation for progress with their gifts of spirit, tradition, friendship, and scholarship. Their successors have held on to these gifts and shared in their development these twenty years. In comparing the past with the present, we tip our hats to the days of yore. 4 Our School At Work The Real Beginning a Tried, tested, and true Scaled. Mr. Archer Millican, Mi t Helen Iddings, Mi Suo Floronte, Mr. William Hillman, Mr . Ruth Elgin, Mr . Agne liptcomb, Mi Chorlene Kiracofe. Standing Mr. Irving lindtey, Mr. Robert Garner, Mi Dolly Collahon. DEDICATION In appreciation of their help for the last twenty years, the 1955 Compass honors Miss Dolly Callahan and Mrs. Ruth Elgin, social studies; Miss Sue Florance, biology; Mr. Robert Garner, dean of boys,-Mr. William Hillman, chemistry; Miss Helen Iddings and Mr. Irving Lindsey, mathematics; Miss Charlene Kiracofe, Latin; Mrs. Agnes Lipscomb, English; and Mr. Archer Millican, physics. Here are some interesting facts in the lives of these teachers; Mr. Garner is president of the Alexandria Education Association. While in college he played baseball and basketball and still plays an occasional set of tennis. Mrs. Elgin, who has visited eleven European countries, and Miss Callahan, whose favorite vacation lands are Scotland and Norway, derive keen pleasure from their travels. Miss Iddings comes from a family of eight children, all of whom attended Hanover College in Pennsylvania. 6 Mr. Millican, alias Pop, has taught thirty-three years in Alexandria. He majored in languages at Randolph-Macon College. Mr. Hillman played varsity football for two years at Emory and Henry College. He now enjoys golf for relaxation. Mrs. Lipscomb, who graduated from George Washington University and Georgia State, paints portraits and serving trays. Miss Kiracofe, graduate of Mary Baldwin College, also paints, and her greatest desire is to become an accomplished pianist. Miss Florance, a graduate of William and Mary College, lives on Florance Lane, named for her family, where she studies her garden firsthand. Mr. Lindsey enjoys classical music and gardening, and he is an avid TV fan. He formerly taught at the University of Virginia. Where to look CLASSES........ FACULTY........ ACTIVITIES..... SENIOR CLASS HISTORY With graduation just around the corner 1955 seniors' fancy turned to announcements, caps and gowns, the Senior Prom, and all the other activities leading up to the long-awaited event. That night seniors found themselves reminiscing about the shy eighth graders who were already old hands by their freshman year, and were well into the social and academic swing as sophomores. They recalled, too, when they received class rings and danced amid moonlight and roses at the Junior-Senior Prom. ONIY ONCE—January graduate file into the Baccalcurcate Service. The senior class was part of the great melting pot of the Washington metropolitan area, with a constant flux of students from all over the world. Many came from military families or countries such as Mexico, Israel, Germany, or Peru. In their midst were all-state football players, a State spelling champion, and the best actor in Northern Virginia. IT'S GRADUATION TIME—The speakers for this momentous occasion are Esther Alexander, Don Wosscr-mon, Alan Reynolds, Cloy Burchell, and Charles Cupples. 10 By popular demand SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Mr. Irving Lindsey, Sponsor; John Cox, President; Alon Reynolds, Vice-President, and January Class Chairman. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS John Cox, an outstanding leader, has presided over the class since his freshman year. A good student and sports enthusiast, his friendliness and sense of fair play were apparent in everything he undertook. Alan Reynolds has a dual role as a class officer this year, being Vice-President of the Senior Class and President of the January Class. A quiet and hard working honor student, he was active in many extracurricular activities. His sincere concern for his classmates won him the respect of everyone who knew him. Lillian Lucas, a member of the Quill and Palm, was appointed Class Secretary. She will be remembered for her striking beauty, her friendly smile, and her outstanding scholarship. Standing: Mrs. Snider, Sponsor. Foremost in the mind of the junior class this year were their arrangements to provide a successful spring prom for the graduating seniors. A heated campaign selling class cards raised money for their treasury along with a cheery Christmas Sock Hop, complete with Santa Claus and his little helpers. May brought the long-anticipated and planned-for dance featuring a theme straight from gay Paree. The juniors worked hard to be rewarded with an occasion which will last long in the memories of those who enjoyed it.
