WCIRIID OF GW 12:15pm Bobby Riggs? It couldn't be!” Well, it was. Although not too popular with Billie Jean King, Bobby Riggs was a big success with a large Danville audience. After speaking to a group in GW’s auditor- ium, he took on two of Danville’s best ten- nis players, one of which was Mrs. Martha Woods. Not a sore loser, Mrs. Woods asked for her opponent’s autograph. 3:15 PM A weekend eagerly anticipated by all was the weekend of Fes- tival in the Park. Students always enjoyed this event, especially the dunking booth. 29 5:30 pm Many students enjoyed rafting. Penny West, Sandy Van deVisser, and Berkley Bidgood were tired after a day on the river.

A DAT IN THE Weekends 8:00 am Many GW students enjoyed weekend activities in the J.T. Christopher Stadium. Whether it was a football game or track meet, the stadium was filled with students. 10:00 am Members of the Medical Careers Club gave up parts of their weekends to help the elderly at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home. As part of the training for their career, these students did varied things - from giving the residents their daily baths to simply taking the time to sit down and have a nice, friendly conversation with them. 11:00 am GW students often took off to the beach for a weekend during the summer months. Dawn Holliday was caught by surprise by a camera bug after coming in from a day on the beach.

A IDaVT IN THE Homecoming 3:10 pm Which class would triumph? Sophomores, juniors, and seniors tried to prove their own class was tops. Spirit Week, sponsored by the SCA, involved many different contests between the classes. This all climaxed at a pep rally when sophomores proved their “superiority” by yelling the loudest in a cheering contest. However, they did not retain their throne for long. Within five minutes after their champion- ship, they were out-and-out defeated by the GW Marching Eagles. Introduced at the pep rally were the twelve Homecoming candidates. 7:15 pm A Homecoming tradition-bon- fires. The Monogram Club gathered after school to build a pryamid of wood and cardboard. Later that night, GW students became school spirited as the flames of a bonfire danced before them. The football players had gathered to predict who they thought would get burned in the Homecoming game. Crosses, representing the Charlottesville Black Knights of course, were thrown into the fire. Cheering and singing, led by the band and cheer- leaders, added to the fun.
