Text from Pages 1 - 180 of the 1958 volume:

4 n 11 c - hail, all hail to thee.. ... we love thy halls... thy campus fair ■ ■ ■ ...our high school days so rare. george Washington Q high school danville, Virginia foreword Wc live by traditions and they have become integrated with our high school life. Through our campus we feel a close kinship to those who have preceded us, and through them we have become conscious of our unique heritage as students of George Washington High School. Our loyalty is strongly evident in the harmonies of the Alma Mater, in the striking school colors, and in the resounding yell at a pep rally. We are proud of the physical structure of our new building and of the closeness which unites the student body. We will hold in our memories, cherished thoughts of thee.” It is by these familiar traditional words that we pledge to always be a part of the rich heritage of George Washington. It is hoped that in looking through this 1958 Cavalier, you will feel the greatness of devotion which is felt by each of us to the traditions of George Washington High School. dedication For being a teacher in the true sense of the word . . . for giving friendship, understanding, and ideas as well as facts . . . for your untiring work on the Cardinal Talent Scout . . . for your great interest in our student government and the foreign student program . . . we, the Senior Class, dedicate the 1958 Cavalier to you, First Row: Mary Blair Compton; R. This governing body of the Student Council has as its leaders this year Charlie Crowder, Jo Annette- Savage, and Nancy Pretty. The main purpose of the Judiciary is to hear cases involving breach of honor and dishonest practices among students. It suggests suitable punishment for students involved. Members of the Judiciary help to promote school projects. They also serve as guides for the orientation of new students entering GW in the coming year. Another duty of this group is the tabulation of votes in all major elections, such as the S. C. A. officers held at the end of each year. The homeroom representatives are chosen for their qualities of school spirit, leadership and must main- tain a C average. Law-making and law-governing are the main duties of the Student Council. Each member of this group sets an example of behavior for the other members of the student body to follow. The main project of the Student Council this year was to raise seven hundred dollars to send a G. W. student abroad for the summer. Some of the other projects undertaken were the Red Cross Drive, printing of Student Directories, Clash of the Classes, Faith Home Drive, and selling of GW pennants. The Student Council is the most important of all school organizations because it is the representative body for the school, through which each student can have a voice in the school government. These were selected by a faculty committee composed of Mr. Christopher, principal; Miss Walton, sponsor; Miss Estes, chairman of the senior sponsors; Mrs. Davis, guidance department; and Mrs. Cotton, faculty at large. Scholarship was the primary consideration in selecting the new members; however, character, leadership, and service were also considered. In order that more seniors may compete for the National Honor Society Scholarships, the number of juniors elected in March was increased. This scholar- ship is based on the score made on the Scholastic- Qualifying Test which is given in October. The Honor Society, in cooperation with two other organizations, won recognition in the fall by having the winning float in the annual homecoming parade. A dub for first year Spanish students was organized to foster in- terest in the Spanish language and customs. This organization gives the students a greater opportunity to learn alsout their Spanish- American heritage. The activities of the club included the learn- ing of Christmas carols in Spanish, the viewing of Spanish movies, and the composing and pre- senting of skits. In cooperation with the second year Spanish Club, this group sent a basket to a needy family at Christmas. The purpose of the Second Year Spanish (dub is to further the interest in the language by learning more about Spanish speaking coun- tries, their people, and their customs. The for- eign language itself is used more, and movies and outside speakers add variety to the meet- ings. Sporting only ten seasoned men and battling the Asian flu were continuous drawbacks to the hard-hitting squad who showed a definite improvement during the course of competition. Even with thes;- tremendous burdens, the ex- perienced team took two victories of a total of ten outings compared to the one-win season of 1956. Several of the lost causes found the Red- birds way out in front in all departments except the final score. This year the Cardinal gridders were host to the Rcidsvillc Golden Lions in their 1957 sea- son opener. The much improved Reidsville eleven were held close in tack the first half but exploded early in the third quarter to fleece the outmaneuvered Cards 26 to 0. Facing a three- game road stand, the Rcdbirds met their first opposition when they clashed with Andrew Lewis Wolverines of Salem. Fumbles by both teams snuffed out possible scoring chances but Salem managed a shutout with a score of 7-0. Journey- ing to Pulaski to face a team new in Group I football, the Wilson men again showed good potential in the early periods but long end runs by the Orioles in the second half spelled defeat for the Cardinals, 39-12. Continuing on the road. GW turned to Covington. The Cards were able to shove the Cougars around the field, but as the clock stopped, the scoreboard tallied a 13-7 win for Covington. Lewis Everett made a touch- down and Otis Bradley ran for the extra point for the GW score. First Row: B. Wentz, T. Vaughn. W. E. Samuels, R. Henderson, G. Ellison, T. Wilmarth, T. Alfriend. R. Returning to Danville for a two-game home stand, the Girds prepared to meet their biggest arch rivals, E. C. Glass of Lynchburg, in a tilt which gave the Hilltoppers a swamping victory of 37-7 over GW. A long drive for a touchdown by Bill Wentz and an extra point by Ronnie Bry- ant, prevented a Glass shutout. Facing the Hal- ifax Blue Comets, the GW gridders made their annual Homecoming Game an occasion to cel- ebrate when the)' trounced the Comets for a score of 7-6 and their first victor)’ of the football season. Otis Bradley and Bryant brought in the points for the home forces. Taking to the road again, the Redbirds were handed a shutout by the Martinsville Bulldogs, a Group II squad sporting a fine record. The final score was 19-0. The Cards were blasted for a 33-19 Fleming victory although Jerry Squires scored three times for the Danville Redbirds. With odds greatly in their favor, the Magicians underdoged the Cards with a crushing 47-0 victory. A return meet with Blacksburg resulted in a close 24-23 defeat for GW. Traveling to the Virginia High School League Tournament at Norfolk, the GW wrestlers took the number 7 spot with a 34 point team score. Lewis Everett who had won 11 consecutive matches for the GW forces during their regular schedule, entered the tournament with a perfect record but was de- cisioncd in the State Championship finals, placing him second in the state.
