This is no ordinary voyage; it is one that requires courage, poise, rectitude, faith, probity, and intellectual adaptation. The completion of your work here marks the epitome of the beginning of your navigational course. However, in 1965 the world demands more than a beginning. Those who would succeed must become forti- fied with educational preparation, philosophical principles, and attitudinal congeniality, lest they become a wandering vagabon--lost at sea. Many of these objectives are realized by allowing students to concentrate on related ex- periments for which class time is not sufficient to give the desired training or practice. Students may become members of the club if they show a great interest in mathematics and maintain an average of 80 or above. The Number Sense Club has as its officers: President Anna Lewis Vice President Virinda Banks Secretary Mary Lewis Assistant Secretary Patricia Mayhew Treasurer Rosie Banks Chairman of Program Committee Jennifer Mallory Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Jackson Reporter - Diane Lewis Sponsors: Miss S. M. Graham, Mr. R. Singletary 54 THE SCIENCE CLUB Science Clubs afford pupils an opportunity for specialization which they do not have in a science class. Members work on their own with topics of their interest and enjoyment. The science -interested student is probably characterized by the inquisitive mind seeking the answer which is not apparent. He does not accept the obvious as the best, but tends to explore beyond the obvious for the answer to what, why and how. The Science Club plays an important role in developing characteris- tics of pupils which may give rise to the true scientist. The Carver Crucible, the Science Club, has been registered as Chapter 2592 of The Future Scien- tists of America. There were 228 of us enrolled that first year. At that time Carver seemed like an enormous and complex building, but as the year progressed we relaxed and began to concentrate seriously on our schoolwork. To help us make this transition were our sympathetic and understanding sponsors- -Miss Reavis, Mrs. Walters, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Harvey, and Miss Taylor. Our ninth and tenth grade years passed very swiftly. We participated in the various extracurricular activities. By then Carver had taken on the appearance of a second home to us. During those two years we sponsored different activities, such as school dances, cake raffles, basketball games and selling Journal an d Guides to raise funds for the Junior- Senior Prom we were to give our Junior year. Our ninth grade sponsors were Miss Thomas, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Harvey, Miss Keith, and Mr. Finlay. Unfortunately, during our sophomore year we lost two of our best sponsors but we were lucky enough to retain Miss Keith, Mrs. Parker, and Mrs. Harvey. During our Junior year we worked long hours to make the Junior-Senior Prom an unfor- gettable experience for our departing seniors. We had for our theme With a Song in My Heart . The Rocking Riffs provided the music for us that night. We also crowned Joyce Ruffner Miss Junior. Mrs. Harvey, Mrs. Parker, and Mr. Finlay were our kind and help- ful sponsors. Although we were quite happy as Juniors, we were overjoyed at the thought of becoming big shot seniors. In 1964 we entered Carver for our final year. Almost from the start plans were made for that great day of graduating. We also worked wholeheartedly to produce a good year- book worthy of our many years at Carver. We were proud and thrilled to have Sylvia Beasley crowned Miss Homecoming for 1964. Our advisors were Mrs. Harvey, Mrs. Par- ker, and Mr. Finlay, to whom we owe our deepest appreciation and gratitude for their wise counseling . Throughout our many years at Carver we have left a large number of our former classmates behind in our struggle to reach the top. But those of us who will march down the aisle, hold our heads proud and straight and gaze into the future. Carver will al- ways have an inspiration, rrforal, social, and memorable effect upon our hearts and minds and the path we choose to take. 72 ML Advertising mm The Most Distinguished Name in School and College Jewelry EDWARD C.
