ALMA MATER Carver High School! Carver High School Sing we now our songs of praise. Song of praise and adoration With our voice now we raise. Striving onward, striving upward; Striving with a heart so true. Carver High School! Carver High School As we go to fight life ' s battle, May we all thy teachings bear; So that we may all work to be like he Whose name thy front doth bear. May we move upon life ' s road To bear our hardships trials too. Carver High School! Carver High School We ' ll fore ' er be true to you. Carver High School! Alma Mater! May we ever, ever be; A great service to thee. Still now wearing thy dear colors Of maroon and golden hue. Carver High School! Alma Mater! We ' ll fore ' er be true to you. Coda Ever be true to you.

On October the first, in the year of nineteen forty-eight, one hundred and seventy- nine ambitious Freshmen entered the spacious new building of the George Washington Carver Regional High School. The step from elementary school to high school was frighten- ing enough-but our class, the first Freshmen group to enter the newly erected building, felt, perhaps subconsciously, that our debt to ourselves as well as to society was even greater. Along the way some of us failed; that is, all of us were not able to even complete our Freshmen year. But those of us remaining were well represented on the honor roll, In the choir, the dramatic club, and the band. In our present Senior class we have in our advanced band James Porter, Margaret Price, Maria Lewis, Marshall Jones, Roberta Young, Lucille Ferris, Bertha Walker, Hebert Young, Beaure Jackson and Evelyn Jenkins (majorette). In our choral group we have Ruth Phillips, Marshall Jones, Mary Colbert, Virginia Christian, Bertha Walker, Maria Lewis, Roberta Young, Evelyn Jenkins, Beaure Jackson, Catherine Dennis, and Annette Lovell. During that year several members of our class appeared in a pageant that was written and directed by Mrs. Carrie Michle, a faculty member. These class members were Hugh Ferguson, John Gales, Richard Slaughter, Cynthia Smith, Thelma Mickey, Deloris Shirley and Catherine Dennis. The Sophomore year is often considered the up-hill year, so we continued to strive. Sometimes the going was tough , but with the aid and guidance of our instructors we happily became Juniors. As Juniors we were represented in dramatics by Johnnie Yaeger, Iris Mathews, John Barbour, McKlnly Dennis, Robert Johnson, Polly Shelton, Richard Slaughter, Valma Kilby, Mable Miller, and Havanna Johnson, who appeared in the presentations of Little Miss Somebody and Society Rides Again. Valma Kilby protrayed the main character in Society Rides Again . We were not forgotten in the realm of athletics, fcr that year we won the intramural basketball award. Our own Bertha Walker and James Porter represented us in an interracial talent contest. They won first and second prizes respectively and are yet outstanding students in music. This, our triumphant Senior year is ’Before us, and the sixty-nine of us are con- tinuing to aspire. Humbly we take a backward glance, for we know our true History is yet to be written.
