We have humbly selected our class sponsors--Mrs . Viola P. Blair and Mr. Frederick I. Hawkins, who have patiently worked with us during our eventful Senior year. Mrs. Blair is a graduate of Virginia State College, where she received her A.B. degree in English; and she has also taken graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and Virginia State College. Mrs. Blair has taught in Culpeper for eight years. Mr. Hawkins is a graduate of Livingstone College and has taken graduate work at New York University. He is a major in social studies and has taught school at Carver four years. With profound gratitude to Mrs. Blair ana Mr. Hawkins, we aeaicate this Yearbook in remembrance of their guidance ana inspiration that have led us thus far. On October the first, in the year of nineteen forty-eight, one hundred and seventy- nine ambitious Freshmen entered the spacious new building of the George Washington Carver Regional High School. The step from elementary school to high school was frighten- ing enough-but our class, the first Freshmen group to enter the newly erected building, felt, perhaps subconsciously, that our debt to ourselves as well as to society was even greater. Along the way some of us failed; that is, all of us were not able to even complete our Freshmen year. But those of us remaining were well represented on the honor roll, In the choir, the dramatic club, and the band. In our present Senior class we have in our advanced band James Porter, Margaret Price, Maria Lewis, Marshall Jones, Roberta Young, Lucille Ferris, Bertha Walker, Hebert Young, Beaure Jackson and Evelyn Jenkins (majorette). In our choral group we have Ruth Phillips, Marshall Jones, Mary Colbert, Virginia Christian, Bertha Walker, Maria Lewis, Roberta Young, Evelyn Jenkins, Beaure Jackson, Catherine Dennis, and Annette Lovell. During that year several members of our class appeared in a pageant that was written and directed by Mrs. Carrie Michle, a faculty member. These class members were Hugh Ferguson, John Gales, Richard Slaughter, Cynthia Smith, Thelma Mickey, Deloris Shirley and Catherine Dennis. The Sophomore year is often considered the up-hill year, so we continued to strive. Sometimes the going was tough , but with the aid and guidance of our instructors we happily became Juniors. As Juniors we were represented in dramatics by Johnnie Yaeger, Iris Mathews, John Barbour, McKlnly Dennis, Robert Johnson, Polly Shelton, Richard Slaughter, Valma Kilby, Mable Miller, and Havanna Johnson, who appeared in the presentations of Little Miss Somebody and Society Rides Again. Valma Kilby protrayed the main character in Society Rides Again . We were not forgotten in the realm of athletics, fcr that year we won the intramural basketball award. Our own Bertha Walker and James Porter represented us in an interracial talent contest. They won first and second prizes respectively and are yet outstanding students in music. This, our triumphant Senior year is ’Before us, and the sixty-nine of us are con- tinuing to aspire. Humbly we take a backward glance, for we know our true History is yet to be written. Catherine Dennis ALMA MATER Carver High School! Carver High School Sing we now our songs of praise. Song of praise and adoration With our voice now we raise. Since this year was the team r s first season, it did not have a winning year because of the lack of experience. However, the team as a whole made very good showing. i j i ' poat att Sqcuid Captain -- James Terrell Girls ' Varsity Captain Eleanor Jameson Co-Captain Peggy Washington Sponsor Miss Young i i 1 . Having fulfilled our duties to the best of our ability and Integrity, e d o hereby subscribe our names and affix our seals to this document, witnessed: Catherine Dennis Valma Kilby. Dora Jameson @L !« m ‘Ptofi ecy Gazing into my crystal ball, I see the following events taking place: Margaret Pig Price is now the owner of a large pig farm in the Midwest. Her foreman is Duke Jackson. On your next trip to Culpeper don’t forget to stop at the Lord Taylor Hotel, which is managed by Andrew Taylow and his charming wife, the former Catherine Dennis. The latest recording by James Porter and his combo, with Evelyn Jenkins as vocalist, will be heard in the Blue Room at the Marshall Jones Hotel. Roscoe Ford is still driving the Number 15, while his lovely wife, the former Valina Kilby, is home raising chickens and children. The pastor of the Mount Zion Baptist Church of New York is Hugh Ferguson. Herbert Young, an old classmate of his, is head deacon. Now appearing at the Club Ebony in Philadelphis, doing a song and dance act, which she calls The Chicken Hop , is none other than our own Genevieve Pendleton. Two old pals of mine, Jessie Smith and Vera Grasty, are still following the Army around. They have been to almost all of the important places in the world. Dora Jameson and Roger Sonnie Ford are running a nursery school in Culpeper; most of the children are theirs. The Lewis Family Singers have added a new member to their group. He is Buster Reed, the husband of Maria Lewis. On television you will see Iris Mathews and Carroll Bolds playing the title roles of Maggie and Jiggs. Bertha Walker will give her second annual concert in Carnegie Hall this spring. Guess who is p__fessor of French in Scottsville College, Tennessee? He is Mr. French Himself, James Scott. A large modeling and charm school has just opened in New York, operated by Mary Colbert and Helen Jones. Two of their best models are Julia Wanzer and Ethel Carpenter. You all remember Mable Goose Miller. Well, she is majoring in nursing at the University of California, and Deloris Shirley Is her roommate. Bulletinl William Phillips and Virginia Christian have finally decided to tie the knot. They will reside in Hawks Nest, North Carolina. I Just received a marraige invitation from Anthony White and Frances Jones. The hottest dance partner s to hit the Savoy Dance Hall in New York are-you guessed it- Frances Jackson and Robert S. Lewis. Louise and Estelle Rucker are now teaching quietness at Carver. Have you seen the latest dance number? It is called the Shelton-Robinson R umba, named after its originators Polly Shelton and Arminta Robinson. The next time you are in need of a beauty facial, stop In at the Orange Beauty Salon, which is managed by Havanna Johnson and Mary Marie Snead. The latest gospel singers to hit the big time are the Madison Stars. The members of this famous group are Louise Wright, Betty Blakey, Marlene Mitchell and Tabetha Tibbs. A new station wagon has Just been purchased by Solomon Meney and his delightful wife, the former Ruth Brent, to transport their children. In Hawks Foot, Alabama, a public library was recently opened for business by Lucille Ferris and Annie Lambert. The Hill Sisters, Anna and Beatrice, are on tour in the East. Their most sensational number is Two Old Crows on the Fence . Evelyn Starks will render a musical program at the G. W. Carver auditorium this Friday. A most outstanding typing student at Carver is Roberta Young. Of course, she would be nothing else because of her teachers, Evelyn Jones and Shirley Spottswood. Have you eaten at the famous Red Heck Restaurant yet? The proprietors, Ruth Phillips and Lucy Warner, and the head waiters, Daniel Minor and Robert Johnson, are waiting for your order. Starring in the new B roadway Musical, Come Where There ' s Music , Eire Deloris Yager, Elsie Lindsay and Cynthia Smith. The lma Mickey is now preparing to swim the English Channel in the early spring. The first medal given to William Shermon and Jefferson Brown by the Salvation Army was the Distinguished Medal of Chicken Stealing. Richard Slaughter and Johnnie Yager are football coaches at Virginia State College. While going through Death ' s Creek, I stopped at a grocery store, where James White and Beaure Jackson were clerks. Teaching Home Economics at Carver are Elizabeth Woolen and Lucille Carey. It seems that the floors at Carver get swept once a month and the windows washed at Christmas. The janitors are Fred Poindexter and Robert Simpson. If you live in the vicinity of Washington, Virginia, stay on the sidewalk at all times because here come John Barbour and William Noakes in a flashy yellow convertible Cadillac. The Brooklyn Dodgers, bless them, are still losing. Can it be because of their two new players, Samuel Glasker and McKinley Dennis? Who. other than Annette Lovell, is playing opposite Clifford Jackson in the new MGM picture The Pursuit of Happiness ? Attention! All sports lovers! Harold Greene is the heavy weight champion of the world, as announced by his manager, Archie Kenny. On your way home stop and eat at John Gales ' Snack Bar.
