Defense Secretary P; pays a visit to G During the ship's four years of service. George Washington has entertained scores of distinguished visitors, both in port and underway. Because of that fact, GW Sailors are old hands at rolling out the red carpet. and they did so once again when the Secretary of Defense, William Perry, paid a visit to the “Spirit of Freedom on June 29. Perry was accompanied by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, and the senior enlisted leaders of the joint military services. The group took a tour of the ship, interacted with crew members, and got an up-close look at many of the nuances of life onboard an aircraft carrier. During his visit. Perry used the ship’s breakthrough video-teleconferencing capabilities to conduct live interviews on This Week with David Brinkley and Meet The Press. He and the senior enlisted leadership were thoroughly impressed with the carrier’s technological advances, as well as the hospitality of its Sailors.
