Dedication, devotion, and drive were the watchwords of the '86 season for these six- teen talented girls. After grueling tryouts lasting over a month, Coach Younglove had the seemingly impossible task of selecting the proverbial cream of Walton's tennis crop. When the team tri- umphed at the County Championship Tournaments and seized the second place region title, it was obvious that Coach Younglove could not have made any better choices. However, success never comes easy, and the Varsity girls found this to be true. Their incredible enthusiasm and team spirit helped them endure those long practices and tiring matches. Coach Younglove always says, Teamwork pays off . There is no doubt that the strong sense of pride boosted the Raiders to winning status and cemented friendships long after the season ended. The sweat and strained muscles certainly paid off for the Girls' Varsity Tennis Team. 1. Great game Jennifer! 2. Nail it Julie! 3. Coach Bowen YW led the Boys Varsity Tennis team to their ' Region Champion- X ship for the sixth , time in the school's history. Walton beat Wheeler in the first round put- ting them in the finals with Riverwood. The Walton team came together to de- feat Riverwood, one of the toughest teams in the region. Playing singles were: 111 Chris Clay, 112 Ronnie Hass, 413 Kevin King and 114 Steve Brooks. Doubles were 1-'rl Tommy Brooks and Greg Gayden, and 1-12 John Denmark and Scott Nelson. The awards for the season were as follows: Most Valuable Play- er-Chris Clay, 100'Z5 Award-Ron- nie Hass, Most Improved-John Denmark, Best Record-Tommie Brooks, Academic Award-Steve Brooks. Chris Clay went to the indi- vidual region. I feel like Walton will continue its domination in tennis due to the dedication and practice of our play- ers year roundf, Coach Bowen will make these words ring true by con- tinuing to coach the Raiders onto more Region Championships.
