Young's first year as - Walton s head coach players experienced 5' 55 'f challenged to accept 31 new attitudes toward 1 the game. Early in the ' summer players re- ported to Raider Is- land. Here, the 1987 Camp Walton Full Metal Jacketn training program began. The day start- ed at 8:00 a.m. with a crisp, two hour practice in the cool morning dew. By 8:00 p.m., the players were exhausted and fatigued, but they knew they accomplished a great task. Camp Walton lasted for four grueling days, and it was the beginning for the Raiders quest for the Region 5AAAA crown. I as ,W 1' X -I IW I X new concepts and were I ' 7 5 I A N , t 1 Q r 4+ X s Raider Valley was the site for the Raiders first game. Douglas County was the obstacle. This years game was the closest meeting be- tween the two teams. The Raider defense al- lowed only three points, but that was all D.C. needed to capture the victory. Moving on to Lassiter the Raiders again had a close-call. A 17-14 score was a disappointing Raider defeat, but confidence was high. The Ragin' Raiders, under sophomore quarterback Keith Grunewald, ruled off some straight wins to climb back to the number one position in the Region. Walton would finish the season with seven region wins including a long awaited pay- back to Lassiter. As the playoffs began it was Walton and Ros- well for the second year. The Raiders defeated the Hornets in overtime by a last minute field goal. The Region Championships challenged Wal- ton to take on the Wheeler Wildcats. The Raid- ers had defeated Wheeler once during the regu- lar season play. Unfortunately, Walton came up just short with a 16-15 defeat.
