S El-SCH Aside from the specialized courses given in the English Department, there is a full extra-curricular activ- ity program. Lv The Drama Guild, headed by Miss Pat Collela, is at present taping was scenes from plays read in school. During the school year they will pre- sent a show which will be seen by the entire faculty as well as the student body. The Guild also helps to inspire the prospective young actors and actresses by adopting work and succeed as their motto. The Drama Guild has two very important purposes: To supply the assemblies with entertainment, and to provide members with experience in acting, directing, stage-managing, scenery, and lighting. lVlR HAROLD ZLOTNIK chairman with members of his Poetry Club Michael Rieman Leslie Gerber Abigail November Liga Volmars Karen Kwartin Helen GLISH To enable the student to increase his knowledge of the theater and movies, the English Department offers two distinctive courses. The first is the Film and Theater Class, taught by lVlrs. Ethel Solovay, and the second is the Drama Class, taught by lVlr. Ellis lVlarmor. The Film and Theater Class, which is only offered to seventh termers, teaches the art of analyzing and reviewing a movie or show, thus enabling the student to become a critic in his own way. Writing, direct- ing, producing, and acting are also discussed, and a brief synopsis follows each study. Although the Drama Class does a brief study of shows both on and off Broadway, the history of the theater is delved into thoroughly. In preparation for college, lVlrs. Solovay teaches an Honors Background Class in English Literature. To be a student in this class, one must possess extremely high grades in English and be in the seventh term. To increase one's knowledge of poetry in both the under- . standing and writing of the same, a poetry club is sponsored Blitzer June Feigenheimer w .. - e by the English Department. SCDCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Department, under the leadership of lVlr. Louis Fried- lander, offers an area of study which includes: two terms of World Geography, World History, American History, and one term of Economics. These courses are a necessity for all students working toward an Academic or Commercial diploma. The faculty includes lVlr. William Abramowitz, lVlr. Paul Becker, lVliss Evelyn Berman, lVlr. Julius Bloom, lVlr. Stanley Finger, lVlr. Gerald Fleisher, lVlr. Saul Friedman, lVlr. Norman Geschwind, lVlr. lVlartin Goldberg, lVlr. Morris Kraskow, lVlr. Jacob Lange, lVlr. Richard lVliner, lVliss Clarice lVlithers, lVlr. Melvin Rook, lVlr. William Warmbrand, lVlr. George Weinstein, lVlr. Blerney Yukolis, and lVlr. Harry Zeiger. Aside from the regular curriculum, the department has a number of special classes, clubs and events. There is the course of Problems in American Democracy KRADJ which involves a study of United States government, its functions, obligations and challenges. For the first time in Wingate's history, the class of Political Science is beng offered. lt is the study of the way power is gained, distributed and used in the public sphere. ln the way of clubs, there is the history club open to all students who desire to embark on some exploration of that field.
