lNAl'Nft YOU ARE AN AMERICAN THE courtroom was ahve wlth people people IH and out of unlform people w1th books and people wlth cameras pom pous business men wxth f1fty cent c1gars Army Cfhcers and Navy men In the cor ner the members of a marme band dressed 1n shlny blue unlforms wer nervously waxtlng In the m1dst f this mllllng throng there stood a fear ful and wonderlng woman A woman bowed by years of toll A black shawl wls thrown over her shoulders and shadows partlally concealed her face But even n the sem1 darkness a close examrnatlon would leveal that she was a Japanese She was unnotlced 1n the crowd The Whlti? ha1red Judge came forward and rapped the gavel Sllence fell lnstant Anna Isamora come forward please he sald Anna approached t1m1dlv wlth her head low She had been summoned to Anna the Judge sald gently as you know on the seventh of December of last year the Army of N1ppon struck a treach erous blow at the Un1ted States At the same tlme Amerlcans 111 Japan were thrown 1nto concentratlon camps some of them are dead now Anna you are gorng to go avg av from Los Angeles You are golng to a town near Bellevue Indlana The town 1S to be populated by Shlnto Amerlcans You w1ll stav there for the duratlon All of youl lace on the Paclflc coast w1ll accompanv you Now Anna I want you and vou people to make that camp a c1ty an Am erlcan clty Most of you are loyal Amer lcans a few are agalnst our govelnmenf We have no way of telhng between the two Anna I w1sh we could' Anna turned to go but the Judge lnter rupted Anna walt a moment th1s man has somethlng to say to you Anna turned uncertalnly A Navy man came forward he was be decked w1th shlny medals and multi col ored rrbbons He looked at hex wxth pam filled eyes pa1n that only men who have had to do a dreaded thlng know Anna he sald simply You have 1 son m the Navy Anna bowed uncertaxnly Anna I have somethmg to tell you ,our sen Hls vo1ce broke He pxcked up a yellow cablegram and handed It to her Anna could not read but somehow she seemed to sense what It sald Great tears swelled rn her eyes and they blurred her vlsxon The officer took out a white paper He began to read ln a deep reso nant voice For conspxcuous gallantry over and be vond the call of duty the Congress of the Un1ted States of Amer1ca awards the Con gre 1onal Medal of Honor to Hlro Isamo 1a m1dsh1pman Un1ted States Naval Re rve k1l1ed 1n actxon at Pearl Harbor De cember 7th 1941 He halted abruptly and then a blue rrbbon passed over her head and a gold medal swung from It Thats, all Anna except for one thmg Wherever you are whatever you do 1f you hv to be a thousand years old dont for vet YOU RE AN AMERICAN CITIZEN' ANIMAL COURAGE 'IHE cat had been starmg at h1m for more than an hour Not a port1on of her body moved She was as lmmoblle as the Sphmx She glared at h1m w1th yellow green eyes Even when he turned h1s head he knew that she was watching h1m He was swearmg under h1s breath Great drops of persp1rat1on rolled along the rldge of h1s nose and dropped onto h1s shlrt front He ran a stubby red finger alone the 1ns1de of hlS collar He had long SIHCC emoved h1s neckt1e but he was Stlll un comfortable A great 1dea struck h1m Why n t unbutton h1s collar button9 Dehghted wlth h1s ldea he reached up two trembllng hands and tr1ed to dlsengage the button but It d1d not work Suddenly he gave a d1sgusted wrench and tore at the button It came off w1th a loud pop and rolled onto the carpet He touched It ruefully w1th a pollshed shoetlp On the desk 111 front of h1m lay a 32 26 Xl llllwl' .'
