PIONEER NETMEN BOAST BEST SEASON IN EIGHT YEARS Coach Ed Shields and his 1951-52 netmen had their best season since 1944 when the Pioneers captured the Conference title. The 1951-52 cagers placed third in the Western Division with an 8-3 mark and ran the season count to 15-9- In the year 1951 the Robertsdale lads won only four while dropping five, but when the bell tolled and 1952 rolled in, the Pioneer machine began to move. First they checked Tolleston, Wallace and Whiting from climbing too high on the Western Division ladder, before they tumbled to Johnny Barrato ' s league-leading Senators. Valpo, Fort Wayne South and Gary Horce Mann were the next to try, with no avail, to stop the red-hot” Shieldsmen. The basketeers closed the season with a loss to the Wildcats, a win over Emerson and a defeat to second-place Froebel. 22

The Clarksters outscored the Oilers 13-2 in the last three minutes to notch the win. Clark beat fundamental sound Merrillville, 54-48, in the evening session and edged Noll, 37-30, in the semi-finals. It was then that the Pioneer machine began to falter. But it didn ' t run out of gas until the final half of the Sec- tional final against Hammond High. The Shieldsmen held a half-time three point margin, but dropped the classic by a 51-41 decision.
