Dorothea Tolbert was chosen by her fellow cadets to represent Butler at the Military Ball; it was held in April at the Civic Center. She is a major of the Alpha Co., Drill Team Commander, and president of the Semper Fi Club. As president, Dorothea was in charge of the election of Toys for Tots Queen. The Bulldogs fell short of this feat, placing 8th in the region, bi posting a record of 2 wins and S losses.Five of the losses were by the narrow margin of two touchdowns or less. The defense dominated the first four games of the season, allowing only two touchdowns, Northside of Warner Robbins, 4 in the state, scored both, in a 14-0 victory. After such outstandin performances, the Dogs were ranked the region’s best defense, and slipped down to 5th in the region at the close of the season. On the other hand, the offensi with only four starters returning, got off to an inavspicious start, not scoring until the third game of the season, against downtown rival A.R.C. The offense was clicking on all cylinders, with over 00 yards rushing, in the 25-0 drubbing o the Musketeers. Next, arch-rival Hephzibah journeyed between the slabs, to continue the heated rivalry. The cheerleaders are among the busiest students at Butler. Last August the Varisty and J.V. squads attended the Universal Cheer leading Association Camp at West Georgia College in Carrollton, where they won many excellent and superior ribbons. Every night they received a spirit, stick, which was presented as a symbol to the teams who showed the most spirit that day. When they returned from camp, they started preparing for the annual mall competition, the football games, and pep rallies. The cheerleaders were dedicated and hard-working and thus had a very successful year. 190 V A OCITV PUC COI c a ncoo V VI NUI I I IL LI XLLAUU «J i a nY nnr?c oo iwo u n mc LAU I UUUiJ UIMI IU I IUI IL The 1985 Lady Dogs Softball Team brought home the third state championship title in the past five years. After the regular season of play the team had to win the region in order to have any hopes of going on to the state playoffs. The Lady Dogs did just that! They defeated Northside 5 to 1 and Hephzibah 4 to 0 in the final game. The team had a struggle ahead of them after clinching the region 4-AAAA title. The Lady Dogs had to go on the road to play Tift Countyin the district playoffs for the best two out of three series. The team had a difficult time with Tift county in a fifteen inning game 1 to 0. Then won the next game 5 to 3. It finally arrived the day that they had all been waiting for - the State Playoffs. The Lady Dogs were competing with three other schools; Brookwood, Heritage, and Shaw. Despite the cold weather, and other complications, the team swept the state title in three straight, beating Shaw 6 to 2, Brookwood 12 to 4, and Shaw again 7 to 2. It was an exciting time for all players, coaches and fans. It took hard work and dedication to get the Lady Dogs to the playoffs. Early in the season, the team met many problems head on, but when neccesary, all problems were put behind them and the winning tradition was continued. 192 The 1985 team was made up of eleven seniors and four juniors. Five of those seniors had been on the varsity team for four years. Each played an important role in the winning season. The Lady Dogs will look toward a rebuilding stage in next years season with the loss of the starting seniors Coach Sylvester Rosier has been leading the Lady Dogs for the past six years. During this time, the varsity team has acheived a spectacular record of 130-13. Coach Rosier is dedicated and works very hard with the girls to aquire a winning team. He teaches them many drills to enhance the basic fundamentals of softball. A team’s success with base running, hitting and defense is the key to having winning or losing season. We feel this is an appropriate title for the yearbook and staff because our purpose is to reflect memories of the past to the students. We hope the student body appreciates our work and we hope it will remind them of their experiences at Butler. This year the Candela Staff worked hard to produce a book we felt would satisfy the students. We chose Captured Time as the theme and used digital lettering throughout the book. With the addition of a computer, the letter style was perfect for our theme. We would especially like to thank the editors of the various sections. However, many pages would not have been completed without the help of the entire staff. We would like to extend our appreciation to our advisers, Mrs. Walters and Mr. Stalk, for supervising us, Mr. Rogers and Mr. Sherman, for all the time they spent taking just the right pictures, and to Mrs. Jett, for changing the typewriter ribbon whenever we needed it. A special thanks also goes to Melanie McNair for allowing the staff to use her dog, Mischief , on the divider pages and throughout the book. Thanks to anyone else who helped to make this yearbook the best it could possibly be. 256 . :«W|
