Almost an institution, Mr. Roesel has earned the respect of science and math students at Butler for the past 18 years. I n addition he leads an active life in the community as a singer and actor. He is assistant choir director and soloist at Resurrection Lutheran Church and he has performed in numerous productions by the Augusta Players. A native Augustan, he and his wife have a daughter, Chris, who has danced with the Joffrey Ballet. We wish him continued success as we extend to him our appreciation for his contribution to a great Butler High School. Answer: Since 1976 when Mr. Charles Wolf became principal and number one bulldog at Butler High. When he enters pep rallies, the gym vibrates with the bark, Wolf, Wolf, Wolf!” as students pay homage to Butler's most loyal fan. Our principal was born in Johnstown, Penn, and spent his childhood there. He had a career in the Army and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. He has his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Specialist Degrees in Education Administration from Georgia Southern College in Statesboro. He and his wife, Helen, have two sons. We may not always agree with or like the policies set by Mr. Wolf, but it is no coincidence that Butler has become the best high school in Augusta since he came to us. The quality of education, the achievements of our athletic teams and clubs, and our improved reputation should partly be attributed to his leadership. 20 Thomas J. Bennett Mr. Thomas Bennett is assistant principal in charge of student affairs. He graduated from Paine College, has a Master’s Degree from South Carolina State, and an Education Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern. Previously he was assistant principal at Sand Bar Ferry Jr. High. He is married and has three children. John Black Mr. John Black is assistant principal in charge of school affairs. He earned a Specialist Degree in Education at Georgia Southern College and taught Math at Glenn Hills. He and his wife, Diane, have three children. ADMINISTRATION Thomas Clark Mr. Thomas Clark is our newest assistant principal and is in charge of Vocational Education. He has a B.S. Degree from Savannah State, a Master's from South Carolina State, and he is working toward the Specialist degree from the University of Georgia. He is married and has one child. Miss Shirley Ledbetter is assistant principal respon- sible for instruction. She received B.S., Masters, and Specialist Degrees from Georgia Southern College. Before coming to Butler, she taught at Fleming Elementary, Sego Jr. High and Glenn Hills. Shirley Ledbetter 21 SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Barry J. Ayres Mrs. Lounelle Beecher Mrs. Teresa Blair Mrs. Mona A. GOVERNOR’S HONORS The Governor's Honors Program is an instructional experience held during the summer for a highly select group of high school students. It was inaugurated by the State Board of Education in 1964 to provide gifted tenth and eleventh grade students with enriching opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Students who have exceptional abilities and unique potentials are nominated, and after a lengthy and extremely competitive elimination process involving testing and interviewing, the state’s best 600 youths are chosen. The culmination is a six-week program during the summer in which these students learn and grow realizing their own potentials. Butler is proud of having 4 such outstanding young people. Stephanie Bell, Kanna Since the onset of organized softball in Richmond County high schools, Butler has proven to be a dominating force in region play. This past season was no exception Behind the skillful coaching techniques of Coach Sylvester Rosier, the Lady Bulldogs compiled a 12-0 region record, to accompany an overall 14-1 record at the end of the regular season. After winning the Region, the ladies were on their way to the State play-offs against Statesboro High School. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Statesboro with great base running, place hitting, and a sound defense, advancing them to the State finals. There, they won three straight games to capture the State Championship The offensive attack was led by Janet Walden, Mary Chavous. Jenny Milton, and Leigh Ann Martin. The entire team played great defense in earning the team a 24-2 overall record and the school s first State Championship. Congratulations to the 1981 Softball team and Coach Rosier! Immense talent, hard work, and good coaching combined to lead the Bulldogs to the Region title and into the State Playoffs. After months of practice the Dogs hosted North Augusta in the season opener. Superior protection gave quarterback Trent Mercer ample time to throw two touchdowns to Tony Brown. After a North Augusta score and a Mercer field goal the final score was Butler 17. North Augusta 7. The following Friday night turned out to be one of frustration as Westside jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half and managed to hold off a determined Butler comeback. After scoring 15 points after the half the 'Dogs were thwarted by a series of incomplete passes and a controversial penalty. The last second heroics came up short as Butler lost 17-15. The Dogs fared much better against ARC as standout Dino Yarbray started his first game of the season Great defense sparked by ends Cyrus Miller and Raymond Fleischauer and superb running lead the Dogs to a 14-0 shutout. Iq a non-region game against Glenn Hills the 'Dogs showed their awesome might, crushing the hapless Spartans 42-13. Using balanced attack. Butler amassed over 430 yards of total offense. Dino scored three times while Tony Brown caught scoring tosses from quarterback Mercer and Bo Long. In a key Region game against Laney the Butler defense held the Wildcats to only 95 yards. This feat coupled with a solid offensive effort gave the 'Dogs a 10-8 victory. Evans fell 21-0 the following week as Greg Roberts returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. The other Butler scores came on two passes to Leon Bacon and Curtis Davies Butler met Westside for the second time in a crucial Region battle. The game was tied up with only three minutes left when the 'Dogs faked a punt on fourth down and one to get a first down. Two plays later Richmond Stadium roared as the Dogs scored, defeating the Patriots 21 -14 The win can be attributed to a devastating offense that gained over 360 yards This victory tied Butler with Westside for first place in the Region. Against ARC. superior defensive play preserved a 9- 0 shutout of the Musketeers In their next outing, against Laney. ball control keyed the Butler effort As the offense amassed 324 yards, the defense allowed only 100 This combination lead to a 21-7 victory. Trent and Company took the spotlight in a 24-0 stomping of Evans. In the final regular season game, the Butler offense completely over-powered the Knights, scoring three touchdowns and a field goal while grinding out over 370 yards. The entire season came down to one game as Butler clashed with Westside for the Region title and a spot in the State Playoffs. Butler overcame an early lead with a strong air attack. Even though several long plays were called back the 'Dogs prevailed 27-12 to win the Region. In the first half of the State quarterfinals game in Coffee County it seemed as though a Butler victory was imminent as the offense drove on two long scoring drives. At half time the score stood 14-14 following a short Coffee touchdown. In the second half. Butler only attempted one running play even though Dino and Calvin Prior averaged 10 and 7 yards per carry, respectively In their attempt to push, the 'Dogs, subject to fierce Trojan rush, were intercepted four times and fumbled; these turnovers gave Coffee numerous scoring opportunities. The strong throwing arm of Carl Lovelace anchored an excellent and reliable pitching staff. The timely hitting of Trent Mercer and Rudy Broome drove in many runs which proved a major factor in the team’s success. It encompassed many of those incidents associated with becoming a teenager: first love, dances, teenage birthday parties, teenage rebellion and the change of attitude towards greater independence which ear- marks the teenage years. It was handled in a lighthearted style and reflected a positive ap- proach to the joys and disappointments of becom- ing a teen. It was written as a play within a play. 172 Superstar Day was an original, fantastic solution to a problem— what to do with Juniors and Seniors while Sophomores were being tested. For several hours on two consecutive days, represent- atives from junior homerooms competed in the gym against the senior homeroom representatives. Planned by Mrs. Strelec, events included balloon-popping, tug-o- war, broom-riding relay, speed dressing, and basketball shooting. Teachers participated in hula hoop, jump rope, and bubble- blowing contests, among others. The spirit generated by this activity was tremendous and the juniors, class of '82, emerged as champions. Each winning participant was presented with a gold star to wear at school the remainder of the day. Following the conversion of Butler to a comprehensive high school this year, a vocational education program has been added. Mr. Clark is the assistant principal of this program. A few of the courses offered are auto mechanics, data processing, electronics, cosmetology, and drafting. Vocational education enables the students to learn skills which can be used fortheirchosen occupation. §■ CillllllllB an® I '.'=5 1. SIGNED: CLASS OF ’83! 3324 Emerson Drive Augusta, Ga. 30906 EDITORS’ MESSAGE Karen Stagmeier Editor Carl Sweat Assistant Editor The 1982 Candela was a challenging experience for this year’s advisors and staff. In our transition to a more economical production method there were several obstacles to overcome. In order to begin work, the entire staff including the advisor and editors had to learn the new procedures. Many tense moments were spent in debating and voting on which traditions should be continued as well as which new ones should be added. Our thanks to the Candela advisors will be this yearbook itself. Mrs. Walters’ help in artistry and design coupled with Mr. Stalk’s valuable work in business and photography proved to be a successful, if not unique, combination. We would also like to thank Harriette, Jeff, Tammie, Bruce, and Chester for the many hours they spent in the dark; as well as Francine for making the club section special in a different way. Also thanks to Angela, Susan, Clarissa, and Lynda for giving the faculty and student section class. We appreciate the hard work Juanita, Robert, Johnny, and Dean did on the sports section and the many pages of artwork Brian drew to make this yearbook a little more to look at. We’re grateful for the many hours Paula and Julie contributed organizing and putting together the ad section. And Karla, Donna, and Bobby, we couldn’t have done it without you working where you were needed and doing all the odd jobs you did for us. We owe a lot to Ann for keeping our business straight. But there wouldnt be a yearbook without the students and staff of Butler. We thank everyone who had a part in the creation of this annual and offer our best wishes to next year’s Candela Staff. We love ya, Karen and Carl IN MEMOR 1 Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell; When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far. I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.
