FOR THE SENIORS of BHS, this was their final autumn, and autumn meant football. As the memories of high school days grow dimmer, they will no longer recall the B-Varsity games, or rumors of insane practices. Only the scenes of Friday night, hot, freezing, hysterical, and some- times disappointing, will remain in their minds. And then they will remember the sweet tast of their victories, and the sadness that lingered after a loss - the 1971 football season - when we almost . . . 3 it , p ,,,, . .'ri K ' 1 f ', , W' ' ,ira X, iiii . But after careful review and reform of the team, Coach Russell matched the Bull- dogs against North Augusta in the Shrine CWaterJ Bowl on Sept. 17, and Butler arose victorious, 12-6. Next, the Bulldogs combined its highly-praised defensive ma- chine with its methodical and powerful ground game to produce a field'day romp over respected N.E. Macon, 40-0. For the grande finale of the preconference games, Butler narrowly escaped from hot and humid Savannah as they scored a last-minute touchdown to defeat the Sol Johnson Atomsmashers, 13-6. BACK IN AUGUSTA- the following Friday-the Bulldogs opened the con- ference race playing host to Lucy Laney High School. The two teams were held to a deadlock the majority of the evening. But Laney managed one solemn touch- down which proved to be the margin, O-7. The loss was partially avenged when the 'Dogs traveled to Bald- win Co. and completely shut out the Braves, 39-O. Coming back to the Garden City, but not to Butler Stadium, the following weekend held more roses as the Bulldogs bulldozed past ARC in their 3rd shutout, 26-O, But then, on their final road game, Butler was treated to a heart-breaker, losing once a- gain to Laney via a 'Cat touchdown in a game of literally inches, O-7. The next match, however, ended with a very satisfying home- coming victory over Baldwin, 20-0. In the last game of the season, Butler was dis- illusioned at losing her chan- ces for the Region, and Richmond had apparently im- proven. The result: Butler was held, 6-28. Final verdict: a successful season, won 6, lost 4. On March 31, a member of Butler passed away. He was not an alumnus, nor a member of the faculty or staff: yet he was the staunchest supporter that Butler ever had. Willie Potter never had the privilege of attending our school, but his pride and loyalty to Butler exceeded by far that of anyone who ever has attended. No matter how poor a season the Bulldogs had, or how low the spirit of the students, sank, Willie's spirit never faltered. Willie was blessed with eternal childhood and he possessed the love of life that only children can have. Willie was often the target of good-natured ridicule, but he never took offense. Although Willie was retarded, he knew the difference be- tween right and wrong. Willie loved the Lord and lived a life far above the standards of many Butler students both past and present. We all could profit from having known Willie. Willie loved Butler and Butler loved Willie in return.
