Teaching, teaching well, teaching with evident pleasure—these traits are exemplified in the everyday class procedure of Mrs. Beaird. A lively personality brimming with enthusiasm is also characteristic of her. She makes the pages of literature glow as she conducts her students along paths of cultural development and aesthetic appreciation. The Candela Staff respectfully salutes an outstanding person and a splendid teacher.

Features Many things make up a school, though education is the primary factor; the appreciation of beauty, capability and excellence is held high. It is the efforts of the individual student which the Feature Section of The Candela presents. All Senior girls are entitled to compete for the honor of Miss Candela. After screening tests made by local judges, the competition is narrowed to three from whom the winner is selected. The Homecoming Queen must meet the standards of grace, poise, beauty and personality. She is selected by the vote of the student body. Miss Senior, Miss Junior and Miss Sophomore are the awards given on the basis of scholastic ability as well as poise and personality. They are selected by class vote. The highest scholastic average is a very honored and coveted award. It is achieved as a result of three and a half years of long, hard and diligent study. Merit Scholars are chosen for having demonstrated high potential for college achievement by distinguished performance in the National Merit Program. The Star Pupil is the student who achieves the highest score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. It is also the privilege of this student to select the teacher who has inspired him most during his school years. The D.A.R. Award is given to a senior, who through a speech before the local chapter and their grades, show that they deserve this honor. The leadership prize goes to those students who after four years have proved their interest and appreciation for the school. The Elks Club of Augusta gives recognition to students who have shown ability in the areas of leadership, citizenship, perseverance, resource- fulness, sense of humor, and neatness. The students assembled a book for the lodge. The Sportsmanship award, presented by the Athletic Department, goes to deserving Seniors who have shown good behavior and cooper- ation on the athletic field as well as in the classroom. The Citizenship award is given to a Senior boy and girl who have excelled in the acceptance of responsibility, dependability and participa- tion of school activities. The faculty makes the selection. The Most Representative boy and girl are chosen by the Senior class. The deciding factors of this award are the qualities of dependability, class participation, scholastic performance and the ability to get along with others.
