Candela George P. Butler High School AUGUSTA, GEORGIA Volume 7 Editors: Rod Radford and Patricia Sheldon Business Editor: Martin Saumweber Advisor: Mrs. Julia Chatt Business Advisor: Miss Ann Edenfield 1968 I Table of Contents Features 12 Academics 26 Athletics 50 Activities 84 Classes 122 Ads 190 THE STUDENT IS THE SEEKER THE INQUIRER THE BUILDER The sun rising boldly over the edge of a distant horizon patiently waits to catch a glimpse of the fresh youth awakening from his restless slumber, starts and waits, hopes and anticipates, that this, this present generation will complete the task bequeathed upon them by the old . . . THE STUDENT Then Fully realizes That without diversion life seems pointless And without learning life remains uncertain And without faith life remains empty The truths of yesterday Are today's lies The noes that were before Are quick becoming yesses It's not hard to find himself In a multitude of messes He must speak out and let his voice be heard He must create a feeling of unity, brotherhood He must march against the wrong To doubt not that the universe Will hear his song He must create beauty and peace He must extinguish hatred and anger To prove to a doubting, jeering world That this is a new generation And at the sunset To find that this generation has reshaped, remade, and recreated a better tomorrow in which laughter, peace and achievement reign over tears, wars and waste. 2 3 6 GEORGE HIGH 9 Dear Butler Hi, Our Butler Hi, We lift our song to thee And pray thy love and truth and light our guide will always be. May honor reign and strength prevail to keep our spirit bold; With splendor grand. We proudly stand Forever White and Gold I . BUTLER C HOO L 9 Teaching, teaching well, teaching with evident pleasure—these traits are exemplified in the everyday class procedure of Mrs. Beaird. A lively personality brimming with enthusiasm is also characteristic of her. She makes the pages of literature glow as she conducts her students along paths of cultural development and aesthetic appreciation. The Candela Staff respectfully salutes an outstanding person and a splendid teacher. 12 Features Many things make up a school, though education is the primary factor; the appreciation of beauty, capability and excellence is held high. It is the efforts of the individual student which the Feature Section of The Candela presents. All Senior girls are entitled to compete for the honor of Miss Candela. After screening tests made by local judges, the competition is narrowed to three from whom the winner is selected. The Homecoming Queen must meet the standards of grace, poise, beauty and personality. She is selected by the vote of the student body. Miss Senior, Miss Junior and Miss Sophomore are the awards given on the basis of scholastic ability as well as poise and personality. They are selected by class vote. The highest scholastic average is a very honored and coveted award. It is achieved as a result of three and a half years of long, hard and diligent study. Merit Scholars are chosen for having demonstrated high potential for college achievement by distinguished performance in the National Merit Program. The Star Pupil is the student who achieves the highest score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. It is also the privilege of this student to select the teacher who has inspired him most during his school years. The D.A.R. Award is given to a senior, who through a speech before the local chapter and their grades, show that they deserve this honor. The leadership prize goes to those students who after four years have proved their interest and appreciation for the school. The Elks Club of Augusta gives recognition to students who have shown ability in the areas of leadership, citizenship, perseverance, resource- fulness, sense of humor, and neatness. The students assembled a book for the lodge. The Sportsmanship award, presented by the Athletic Department, goes to deserving Seniors who have shown good behavior and cooper- ation on the athletic field as well as in the classroom. The Citizenship award is given to a Senior boy and girl who have excelled in the acceptance of responsibility, dependability and participa- tion of school activities. The faculty makes the selection. The Most Representative boy and girl are chosen by the Senior class. The deciding factors of this award are the qualities of dependability, class participation, scholastic performance and the ability to get along with others. Richmond County School Superintendent: Roy E. Rollins. Assistant County School Superintendent: Harvey Duncan. The Richmond County Board of Education plans and executes effective pro- grams to meet the needs of the students. Butler appreciates the conscientious efforts of the board for their many educational developments that add purpose to learning. 28 Mr. D. K. McKenzie Principal Throughout the school year Mr. McKenzie has endeav- ored to make Butler High School an institution where each student becomes an individual with talents and abilities of his own. Because of his interest in and un- derstanding of the student body Mr. Mac holds a spe- cial place in the hearts of Butler students. His stabilizing influence is felt in the daily rhythm of school life, as he deals with the problems major and minor of student and faculty member alike. To Mr. Mac Butler owes a debt—one which cannot be paid easily. He is Butler High School. Mr. McKenzie prepares to make the daily announcements. 29 Tim, Danny, Donald, Mrs. McKenzie, Mr. McKenzie, and Malinda share a happy home life. Emily, Mrs. Hinely, Martha, Ann, and Lewis, Jr. always stand behind Mr. Hinely in his work. Mr. Lewis J. Hinely Assistant Principal A student can turn around any corner, glance down any corridor and find Mr. Hinely. There is no problem too large or small for him to listen quietly and diag- nose correctly the trouble. If he does not have the solu- tion one can always walk away with the feeling there's someone who cares! Mr. Hinely is deeply concerned with the well-being of the student body and the faculty. His one desire is that Butler be a school where each student can fit into the environment, and progress according to his abilities. It would be difficult to find a man with more impartialty, consideration, and indulgence than our own Mr. Lewis J. Hinely. 30 Mr. Hinely pauses in his busy schedule to make an important phone call. Miss Balk and Mrs. Griesel help Mr. Davisson prepare the absentee list. Office Personnel May I help you? greets each But- ler student as he enters the office. Without the capable office staff, But- ler would not operate as efficiently. To each of them the students express deep appreciation. One of the busiest places at But- ler is the clinic. The clinic is efficient- ly run by Mrs. Markert, Butler's school nurse, who is always ready to lend a helping hand. 31 Mrs. Markert, always willing to help. Guidance Butler's counselors aid students by offering scholastic assistance. Such problems of sched- ule changes, courses of study, and college placement are handled efficiently by these people. Mrs. Sigman and Mrs. Trahan work together to give students the best counsel. Library A wide variety of books rang- ing from science-fiction to refer- ence books can be found in the well stocked Butler Library. The library is a source of information and knowledge and it provides unlimited travels through the world of imagination. Mrs. Hardin seeks further information to better help the students. Miss Barbara McGahee, head of the Social Studies Department. Social Studies A knowledge of the past helps to understand the present. Through subjects such as geogra- phy, government, economics, American history, and world his- tory, Butler students study the development of the world and its people. English The English Department of Butler intro- duces the student to the puzzling world of grammar and the fascinating world of litera- ture. Through active study of each, students come to appreciate the language of the day - English. Mrs. Barbara Abernathy, head of the English Department 33 Mathematics Mathematics has grown in use and complexity in the space age. The con- struction of build- ings, the firing of missiles, and the suc- cesses in business or the world of science evolve from the use of mathematics. The subject, therefore, lays the foundation for the individual's thinking and thus leads to the individ- ual's doing. Mr. Harold Johnston, head of the Math Department Science Science courses at But- ler include biology, chemistry, general sci- ence, and physics. Each subject presents a chal- lenge to Butler students. Through thoughtful study and experimentation each student receives in- sight into the challeng- ing world science offers in the space age. Mr. Franklin Boulineau, head of the Science Department 34 Business In the modern business world speed and ac- curacy are highly valued. To be ready to meet the demands of this business world, Butler's busi- ness department prepares the student to work effectively and efficiently. Miss Janis Bargeron, head of the Business Department, and Mrs. Varn, her student teacher. Psychology Through psychology, Butler students study the mysteries of the mind, especially those asso- ciated with consciousness, be- havior and the problems of ad- justment to environment. Psy- chology provides an answer to many searching questions con- cerning the emotions and actions of the individual. Mrs. Ginny Sikes Language Language courses are important in the curricu- lum of Butler. The courses offered at Butler are French, Spanish, Latin, and German. These courses are the keys which unlock the doors of commu- nications with the world. Miss Marilyn Mann, head of the Language Department Home Economics Home Economics is more than learning to cook and sew. It prepares young women to be responsible adults, future homemakers, and worthwhile citizens. Butler's Home Economics Department is well-equipped to mold these young women into these special characteris- tics. Mrs. Barbara Hooton and Mrs. Virginia Stockton, co-hcads of the Home Ec Department 36 Art Whether it be through pop art or the classic landscape scene, students express their inner feelings and thoughts through art. Art not only develops creativity, it teaches an appreciation of natural artistic ability and talent. Miss Diana Brehm Mr. B. H. Walker Band The band under the direction of Mr. B. H. Walker, has done a fine job of representing Butler this year. Long, hard hours of work and practice help to make a fine band member. Butler appreciates all the time and effort spent by these faithful members. Miss Jane Hadaway Chorus The performances of the chorus help to further represent Butler. Sessions of practices help chorus members maintain good pitch and good harmony. The chorus under the direction of Miss Jane Hadaway has done a wonderful job this year. 37 Diversified Cooperative Training Butler's Diversified Coop- erative Training is an effect- ive program which offers on the job training and scholas- tic achievement. Students are able to prepare for a success- ful career in a chosen field. Mr. Edward Dechau Drafting Drafting teaches the student to draw for a definite purpose and to learn precision while drawing. Draft- ing is a graphing language known all over the world. Many worthwhile jobs await capable craftsmen. Mr. Ray Timbs Driver’s Education The driver's education program guides many young drivers down the road to safety each year. Driver's Education teaches good driving habits, necessary rules, road courtesy, and a general knowledge of car mechanics. 38 Mr. Harvey Jackson Mrs. Elizabeth Penny, Miss Helen Faulkner, Mrs. Nancy Brower, and Mrs. Sylvia Strelec being their usual selves. Joe is always hard at work. 50 Athletics First comes the painstaking preparation, hours and hours of practice for Butler ath- letes and cheerleaders. Then, the anticipa- tion and excitement of the competition. Each participant experiences his own spe- cial feeling of enthusiasm and anxiety as he awaits the beginning of activity. Suddenly, almost without warning, everything is in motion. It comes so quickly—the joy, the dejection, the victory, the defeat—and then it's over. 51 Bill McGahee, George Berry, David Palmer, and Gibson Girrard— Managers Coaches Russell, Kline, Mathison, Williams, and Overton. THE BULLDOG'S LIFE IS A HARD ONE Butler's first football game of the season was on September 1, 1967 with Butler losing to the North Augusta Yellow Jackets by a score of 21-7. The Bulldogs suffered their second defeat a week later at the hands of Thomson, but their next four games ended in victory for Butler. The 36-7 win over Benedictine Academy especially featured Steve Crislip, Pete Leisey, Ricky Kemmerlin, Rocky Turner, and Gerald Smith for their touchdowns and Lacey Holton for his field goal. Steve Crislip was ready to shine again on September 22 when his two touchdowns helped in pro- ducing a 14-6 win over Savannah High. The next week Butler slipped by Glynn with a score of 10-7. The really big game of the season was the Butler-Richmond game held on Friday, October 13. Steve Crislip scored the first Butler touchdown with a little less than five minutes left in the first half. Early in the third quarter Richmond scored a touchdown without the extra point, making the score 7-6. Later Rocky Turner caught a Kemmerlin pass making the final score 13-6. For the second time in the school's history, Butler was victorious over Richmond. Butler lost its homecoming game and its chances of winning the Region 2-AAA championship by losing to Jenkins of Savannah by a score of 19-3. Lacey Holton was responsible for Butler's only points. Butler finished its season with three victories—a 39-12 win over Aquinas, a 47-6 win over Groves, and a 21-0 win over Swainsboro. 53 Final instruction from Coach Overton before that big sweep to the field. First of all, it takes a devoted and understanding coach. Secondly, it takes qualified managers and trainers to pre- pare the boys for their rigorous season of basketball. But most of all, it takes a talented and dedicated team. Several of the boys made known their feelings toward basketball in the comments below: Steve Crislip: I love basketball, as I do most all sports. I have enjoyed and learned a lot from playing basketball. Basketball has given me friends and moments I'll never forget. I am proud to say I was a member of Butlers' Basketball Team. Cres Hendrix: It's been great being on the team and I'm proud to help represent Butler High. Jimmy Napier: Coming to such a great school as Butler, making the basketball team, and most of all lettering my first year has really been great. Roberto Petro: I enjoy playing on the basketball team of Butler High because it helps me physically and mentally. I appreciate Coach Poss giving seniors an opportunity to re- present the senior class in athletics. Al Sutton: It has been great being on the basketball team. I would not have traded the opportunity of playing basket- ball at George P. Butler High for anything. 62 L. to R., STANDING: Bobby Maddox, Mike Newcomb, Benny Cox, Coach Mathison. Next year they will be a little older and a little better, but the beginnings are here. Some of them have revealed their opinions concerning basketball here: Benny Cox: I enjoyed basketball, mostly because it kept my mind off of lots of other things. I also had a chance to get to know more people at Butler. Robert Krause: It has been both an honor and a thrill playing for the Bullpups this year. I have learned a lot about basket- ball that will help me in years to come. Bobby Maddox: Being a Bullpup this year has made me conscious of the excellent school spirit we have. It has also been an honor for me to be able to play on a great basketball team like Butler's. Mike Newcomb: Playing basketball has taught me to work with other players as well as individually. I have also made many new friends. But most important to me is that it has helped to strengthen me physically and improved my coordi- nation. I like the game and plan to apply myself more so I may be a better player. Kirk Shepherd: It keeps me out of trouble. Also, I learned to work with the others on the team. I play because I love it. 63 DONALD NORRIS 64 AL SUTTON ROBERTO PETRO CRAIG LINDSEY GEORGE LANDRETH LARRY HICKS LEO GREGORY RONALD DORRIS 65 Move, don't relax! Vickie Bufford: The key thing I've learned from basket- ball is sportsmanship. Miss Baker has always told the team to be good sports—no matter what happens. Basketball has a winner and a loser just as life. I hope that playing basketball the last three years at Butler will make me a better person in life so I can be a winner, not a loser. Cherry DeVaney: Basketball has given me the privi- lege of representing Butler. It is not a privilege I take lightly, but an honor I am very proud of. There's nothing that gives me more pleasure than to compete on a basketball court and especially in the great bas- ketball atmosphere here at Butler. To love and respect Butler and everything it stands for comes naturally but one becomes more aware of it when she lives, works, and travels with a team determined to win. Basketball has taught me great respect and love for Miss Baker, who gives most of her waking and a lot of her sleeping hours to basketball. Being around her, this love of the game just has to rub off. Most of us love it so much that we sometimes play with our hearts instead of our minds. Leslie Dittmer: From November to February for the past three years to come I think, eat, talk, and live basketball. That's about all a person does when she plays it six days a week. But believe me I love every minute of it. I don't know what I love more—Butler or basketball. Dianne Dunn: Basketball is a daily routine for me. Everyday I wait for school to end so we will have practice. This happened in 1966, 1967, and 1968, too. This year is something like the repeat of last year with great improvement in me and my fellow players. We have one game left to determine who goes to the state tournament. It will be rough, but if we all are determined enough to win, we will. I would not have changed anything that happened this year at Butler for anything (except the fire). Debbie McWaters: I am proud to be recognized as one of Lou's Lassies, and not only on the basketball court! Sportsmanship is the word; a few teams may out-play us, but Lou Baker's team outshines some opponents with a winner's attitude! Some days I find myself coming to school just to be with the team and so I can play in the next game. Anything I can do to put George P. Butler on top is done; I am proud of the mighty eight-year-old ! Basketball offers lessons to live by,- the way to happy existence is 100 per cent teamwork and love! The golden silence Many duties are embodied into a cheerleader's obligation to urge the team on to victory. She must know enough about the game and her team to choose her method of encouragement. She must never allow a word or a smile to appear at the wrong time. A cheerleader must be strong enough to hold the fans together when their feelings overcome them. She must know when to start a chant, or when to quiet the crowd. She is closely involved with the victories and defeats of her team. Since her emotions have such a great effect on everyone, a cheerleader must always know when to laugh and when to cry. Having ability is vital to every team for victory, but ability without morale often leads to defeat. But- ler's cheerleaders have done their best to boost mo- rale, and they deserve a word of thanks. But not, an insuperable one. If a reasonable number of its members choose to try to change the world gradually they probably will accomplish more than they now expect. The real heroes will be not revolutionary dema- gogues, but the obscure teachers who work out better ways to train underprivileged children; the businessmen who manage to upgrade unskilled workers; the politicians who devise new institutions to govern our metropolitan areas; the journalists who persuade a reluctant citizenry the change is not only necessary but inescapable. These individual efforts may add up to a surprising sum of accom- plishment. For the arriving generation shows more potential than its predecessors. It is healthier and better educated. It is more willing to work for the common good, rather than for purely selfish ends. i John Fischer 123 Ser Adams, Paul Adams, Steve Akridge, Roy Aldenn, Susan Anderson, Russell Ansley, Sandra Anderson, Susan Arnold, Jack Alewine, Carolyn Allen, Jimmy Allen, Ray Allen, Ricky Anderson, Albert Anderson, Linda 124 Bruce Howerton tells brother Eddie, Dream on, Sophomore. ors The ring-bearing hands of seniors.
