And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the road less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. ROBERT FROST Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by . . . And being one traveler long I stood And looked down one as far as I could . . . Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. 9 You are there is an expression that well-fits the atmos- phere of the American history classes as the halls of Butler ring with the enthusiasm, vigor and interest of an excellent teacher wholly engrossed in her subject. Three times this person has been chosen Star Teacher. It is with pride that the Candela staff dedi- cates this volume to MISS BARBARA McGAHEE, an outstanding teacher. ACADEMICS THE MAKING OF A TEACHER Select a young and pleasing per- sonality; drain off all mannerisms of voice, dress or deportment; pour over it a mixture of equal parts of the wis- dom of Solomon, the courage of young David, the strength of Samson and the patience of Job; season it with the salt of experience, the pepper of animation, the oil of sympathy and a dash of humor; stew for about four years in a hot class room, testing occasionally with a fork of criticism. When done to a turn, garnish with a salary and serve hot to the community. There is an ap- preciation for excellence, capability and performance of those who choose the road less traveled by . It is with pride that The Candela presents outstanding students in the Features Section. Senior girls are eligible to enter the Miss Candela contest. Local judges narrow the field to three contestants. The final selection is made by an out-of-town judge. The highest scholastic average is a coveted award, which is made on the basis of three and one-half years' grades. The Sportsmanship award, made by the Athletic Department, goes to seniors who have deserved it for good behavior and co- operation on the athletic field, classroom and all school situations. The Most Representative boy and girl are chosen by the Senior Class. The qualities of dependability, class participation, scholastic performance and the ability to get along with others are the deciding factors for this award. The Citizenship award exemplifies acceptance of responsi- bility, dependability, and behavior beyond reproach. The selection is made by the faculty. The Homecoming Queen is selected by the vote of the student body on requirements of beauty, poise, grace and per- sonality. The Star Pupil is the student who makes the highest score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. The pupil in turn selects the teacher who has meant the most to her during her school years. Miss Senior, Miss Junior and Miss Sophomore are selected by class vote. This award is given on the basis of scholastic ability, friendliness and personality. The leadership prize goes to those students who have proved during four years their interest in and appreciation for the school. CLASSES The future is like a vast maze of intricate pathways. Some- Which walk of life should be chosen? The choice will shape lives. In years to come the student will look back and remem- ber experiences, faces of fellow students, teachers, and friends. Perhaps these memories will evoke a peal of laughter, a whim- sical smile, a joyful tear, a feeling of pride. These experiences may have guided the student in choosing the right road of life. The path chosen embodies an individual's needs and de- sires. This road must serve as a challenge toward inspiration and personal enrichment. The future of each individual is dependent on the decisions. where along the winding paths lie many forks in life's road. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both . . Why don't you take our picture? We're all seniors. What do’ we do after we find the gizzard? I told you I had one I WISDOM By wisdom, a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowl- edge the rooms are filled with all precious pleasures and riches. A wise man is mightier than a strong man; and a man of knowledge, than he who has strength; for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of councelors there is victory. Wisdom is too high for a fool; in the gate he does not open his mouth. PROVERBS 24: 3-7 I'm sure glad this is my last year! That was how it all started at the beginning of this frantic wonderful year for the Candela Staff. We've laughed and scolded, worked and worried, and now, although the work is over for the staff members, we have wonderful memories of the long afternoons we've spent creating the yearbook. Sharon, here's a quarter; will you bring me a hamburger and a Coke when you go to the Brazier? Yes, there were days when we were working long past suppertime, but none of us would trade the fun we've had and the joys we've shared. We've tried to capture the spirit of our Butler for you so you will have it to treasure long after the excitement of that special game fades, and the Spring Formal is only a dried corsage in a scrapbook. In pictures and in words we've tried to bring back the special moments in our lives to treasure, laugh, and cry over in the years to come. And now as we say good-bye, we hope you will enjoy the 1967 Candela as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. c VoJ 0v Sharon Harms Candela Editor Diane Brooks Vicki Blackburn Beverly Bailey Sheryl Duncan Sandra Edwards Debbie Eskew Patrice Eskew Patty Cecil Richard Harveston Martin Saumweber Sandra Schwiebert Imogene Powell Catherine Toomey Julie Keel Mrs. Ann Edenfield—Advisor C It has taken hard work and persistence to be a member of the Candela Business Staff. It has been a full-time job. The members of the staff begin selling ads early in the summer, in order to finance the printing of our Candela. This year's staff has been very successful and cooperative. To you, the Business Staff, goes my deepest thanks for your cooperation and endless hours of work. On behalf of all the members of the Candela Business Staff, I would like to thank our advisor, Mrs. Ann Edenfield, to whom we owe our deepest respect and gratitude for her help and patience.
