Dedication One of the rarest gifts with which a person is en- dowed is that of understanding. In Mrs. Markert this characteristic is her predominate quality plus a genuine interest in the individual. She does not count the hours in the day, but she finds time for the problems, trou- bles and happiness—physical or emotional—of the students and faculty members. Her capable mind and heart vibrate to the pulse beat of Butler High School. The Candela Staff gratefully dedicates the fifth vol- ume of the yearbook to the school nurse, Mrs. Ethel Markert.

Creatures While the pursuit of academic activities is of primary importance, an education must include time for the ap- preciation of beauty, capability, and excellence. There must be a time to remember magic moments of laughter and pleasure. It is with pride that Butler presents beauty and outstanding ability in the features section. Senior girls are eligible to enter the Miss Candela contest on the basis of grades, character, poise, and personality. After a screening test by local judges, the final selection is made by a former Georgia football player, Francis Tarkenton. The Homecoming Queen is selected by a vote of the student body. She must meet the standards of poise, grace, and personality. Homecoming is one of the high- lights of the year. The coronation of the queen was the climax of the Homecoming game and dance. Miss Senior, Miss Junior, and Miss Sophomore are selected by the class vote. This award is given to the girl with scholastic ability as well as poise and person- ality. Monuments are built as remembrances to deserving persons. After three years of working together Butler High School honors those students who exemplify learn- ing, citizenship, promise of success, and the qualities of personality that make for a well rounded person. These students have been selected for the following honors: The citizenship award is voted by the faculty to a boy and girl who have excelled in qualities of depend- ability, cooperation, acceptance of responsibility, and participation in school activities. One of the facets of an education is that of learning to be a leader. Club sponsors select students most pro- ficient in such characteristics as ability to organize and plan, willingness to work, and cooperation. The sportsmanship award goes to seniors who have displayed good behavior on the athletic field as well as in the classroom; who are valuable to the team; and who cooperate in all endeavors. The highest scholastic average is a very coveted award. The selection is made on the basis of grades. Into the making of the grades have gone long hours of study, research, and diligent application in the classroom. No higher honor can be obtained than to stand highest in a class of five hundred. The most representative boy and girl are chosen by the Senior Class. Qualities considered include dependa- bility, class participation, scholastic application, and abil- ity to get along with fellow classmates. 12
