Prologue PROLOGUE Before God began the creation, the world was in total darkness. God’s first act of creation was to separate the light from the darkness. It is God’s desire that all men should live in the light. To live in mental darkness is to live in a world that is void of meaning. The lack of knowledge is one of the great destroyers of mankind. But through the light of knowledge one finds himself and the world of which he is a part and is called upon to serve. Wilful ignorance can be a black canopy that veils the vast possibilities which lie beyond the limited horizons of the mind clothed in darkness. We who have passed through the halls of knowledge of the Butler High School have passed from the darkness into the light. We are grateful to our school and faculty for the guiding hands which have steered us upon a true course. The truth of knowledge has become “a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path.” We are confident that we can meet the challenge of the future because we have come into the light and truth. It is a knowledge of truth that sets men free. Wih this first issue of Candela it is our earnest desire that Butler High will always be symbolic of its meaning. As students go and come, may they know they have passed through a light that forever shines. 3

OUR OWN “MR. MAC! “The Thinker” D. K. McKenzie Principal It has been said that education is a companion which no misfortune can decrease, no crime destroy, no enemy alienate, no despotism enslave. You might ask, “Education for what?” The mere possession of knowl- edge is not enough but it must be coupled with a sincere desire to serve your fellowman in a spirit of humility. The goals we set for our life are important and must be rooted in the love of God and the love of country. The loftiest path of life leads through the avenues of learning and the future belongs to those of you who ac- complish the most for humanity. The Master Teacher said, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works.” There are two ways of spreading this light—to be the candle or to be the mirror that reflects it. Either way, to give life meaning and to make it full, we must show compassion for the less fortunate, practice honesty in all things, and be fair to all men. History is in the making here at Butler and I am proud to be a part of it. It is with pleasure that I present the first edition of Candela of Butler High School to my co-workers and friends. To the annual staff and sponsors, we say congratulations and a million thanks for your efforts. We join you in the enjoy- ment of the fruits of your labor. 4
