From Darkness Unto Light GEORGE P. BUTLER HIGH SCHOOL Augusta, Georgia Volume I 1961-62 STAFF Editor Bonnie Fox Assitant Editor Dianne Chavous Business Editor Danny Carrington Copy Editor Faculty Editor Class Editor Martha Kitchens Evangeline Mutimer Marlene Bromley Feature Editor Susanne Edenfield Activity Editor Sport Editor Art Editor Charlotte Hardy Steve Bush Linda Rader Photographer Stenographer Sharon Webb Dianne Langston Sara Grygo Advisor and Cover Designer Amabell Lansdell Business Manager 2 Prologue PROLOGUE Before God began the creation, the world was in total darkness. God’s first act of creation was to separate the light from the darkness. It is God’s desire that all men should live in the light. To live in mental darkness is to live in a world that is void of meaning. The lack of knowledge is one of the great destroyers of mankind. But through the light of knowledge one finds himself and the world of which he is a part and is called upon to serve. Wilful ignorance can be a black canopy that veils the vast possibilities which lie beyond the limited horizons of the mind clothed in darkness. We who have passed through the halls of knowledge of the Butler High School have passed from the darkness into the light. We are grateful to our school and faculty for the guiding hands which have steered us upon a true course. The truth of knowledge has become “a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path.” We are confident that we can meet the challenge of the future because we have come into the light and truth. It is a knowledge of truth that sets men free. Wih this first issue of Candela it is our earnest desire that Butler High will always be symbolic of its meaning. As students go and come, may they know they have passed through a light that forever shines. 3 OUR OWN “MR. MAC! “The Thinker” D. K. McKenzie Principal It has been said that education is a companion which no misfortune can decrease, no crime destroy, no enemy alienate, no despotism enslave. You might ask, “Education for what?” The mere possession of knowl- edge is not enough but it must be coupled with a sincere desire to serve your fellowman in a spirit of humility. The goals we set for our life are important and must be rooted in the love of God and the love of country. The loftiest path of life leads through the avenues of learning and the future belongs to those of you who ac- complish the most for humanity. The Master Teacher said, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works.” There are two ways of spreading this light—to be the candle or to be the mirror that reflects it. Either way, to give life meaning and to make it full, we must show compassion for the less fortunate, practice honesty in all things, and be fair to all men. History is in the making here at Butler and I am proud to be a part of it. It is with pleasure that I present the first edition of Candela of Butler High School to my co-workers and friends. To the annual staff and sponsors, we say congratulations and a million thanks for your efforts. We join you in the enjoy- ment of the fruits of your labor. 4 Lewis J. Hinely Assistant Principal You can turn any corner, glance down any corridor and find our friend Mr. Hinely. There is no problem too small for him to listen quietly and diagnose the trouble. If he does not have the solution you always walk away with the feeling there’s someone who cares! His personality reaches into the heart of each student. To know Mr. Hinely is to love and respect him as a friend and as assistant principal of Butler High School. 5 6 ETHEL SIGMAN—Counselor Language DOLLY HOGAN WYNONA LONDON HEROINA THOMPSON Homemaking “This is where the girls are!” JEAN HOLLAND JEANNETTE WASDEN T!............................; :TT SANDRA PLATE SHIRLEY PARSONS ANNE PRATT SYLVIA SEYMOUR English JEAN FORTNEY SARA GRYGO FAYE MONTGOMERY BETTY LYNN SNIDER MARY TALLENT SARAH YOUNGBLOOD Math is a Must! Williamson, Lynn Peebles, Glynda McAfee, Janice Armstrong, rFarewell” As I gaze into tlie past my thoughts are comprised of the numerous ac- tivities in which we have engaged during the school year; my heart is filled simultaneously with joy and sorrow. The joy alludes to the many wonderful friends I have made, to the problems we encountered and successfully resolved. The sorrow is created by the thought that the end of this school year may bring about a separation of ways for many of us. If I could express the feeling that is deep within my heart, then, and only then could I project my true feelings as I write this “Farewell.” Being the editor of the first annual of a school that is destined for his- tory has been a grand, glorious, rewarding experience for me. For this I am indebted to you, my fellow schoolmates of 1961-62, and I shall preserve this in my memories forever. In years to come we will leaf through our “Candela” with mixed emo- tions; some will rejoice and some will be sad. Therefore, it is my earnest desire that you feel this message is for each of you. To give full acknowledgement of my indebtedness is impossible; regard- less of how much I might tiy. This arises because the sources of ideas dis- tilled during the year are lost in the filter of time. To those of you who worked long and hard hours; to those of you who stood by ready to help if you were needed; to those of you who could laugh when we discovered a picture was missing and had to do a page again; to those of you who did your jobs well; to those of you on the faculty who were so considerate; to Mr. McKinzie for his encouragement; to Mr. Hinely for his spontaneous visits; to Supt. Roy E. Rollins for his interest and guidance in the field of education, my sincere thanks. To each and every one of you it has been a most fruitful year! But, to you, Mrs. Grygo, teacher and colleague, who stayed with us teaching and guiding, I can only say thank you from the depth of my heart for each and every moment we shared. Your friendship that I have known this year will be cherished in the years to come. To each and all, “Farewell” for now, and God be with you ’til we meet again. ggp §iggi i . • jr. : • JM - '4 :- . - - • . — ■“. • • % -• • r - r • r 4 s fl - v f,'« - ■ • • v. •■? . .• •-. ‘ . _r- - - ■ TT + -—_ r - W • S - .•- -v w .- . .• . - -. - • - - -• - _____.- V .’•w . .•. • . - • ,'■• - • • . .'? . - t... .a , .-•? . .- • • • .:. - ' wr
