This years girlsâ soccer team showed extreme determi- nation and effort. They broke their year losing streak by beating Broad Run 2-1. Due to the large number of Freshmen on the team, they are looking forward to a strong future. The girls came in third place in district this year, placing above Broad Run by a win of 4-1. The effort and determination has grown each year, and a championship team is inevitable. I played on this yearâs J.V. It is an individual sport like track, swimming, cross-country, and so on. Wrestling requires moves. endur- ance. and strength. It also demands good sportsmanship and determination. Wrestling practices are so essential to winning that missing two days could result in the loss of a match. A common wrestling practice involves various exercises. Stretching, muscle-building, and endurance exercises average about 30-45 minutes. This is fol- lowed by weight-lifting, running, and then wrestling. This year's wrestling team had 3 seniors. 9 juniors. 2 sophomores. 2 freshmen, and 6 eighth-graders. The 1977-78 wrestling sea- son was the successful building of next yearâs North Western District Title. Juniors (119) Marcel Willner and (132) Greg Weir both took the N.W.D. title at their respective weight classes. Advancing to regionals (Harrisonburg). Weir received 4th and Willner 5th. Weir advanced to state, which was held in Pembroke. Va. Grant Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Modern Music Masters is an International Music Honor Society which recognizes outstanding school musicians. Students who are selected for this honor must be active participants in school music programs, and maintain high scholastic standing as well as superior grades in music. They exemplify citizenship and musi- cianship. which enhances the Music Department and George Mason High School in the community. L to R. J. Gram. C. Bowling. L. Engle. Mr. Howell. Forensics The Forensics club gives students a chance to practice any form of public speaking that interests them. To begin with there is a review of the areas of competition encountered in the District. Regional, and State meets. The students then choose their favorite form of competi- tion and concentrate on that division in order to become proficient for competition. There are four main areas: poetry reading, prose reading, original oratory, and extemporanous speaking. Spelling is also considered a forensics activity and students who are interested may pick up word lists that have been used in former meets. I. to R, Itt Row: D. Anderson. S. Behr. D. Crowley. A. Through- out the week, with the Pie-eating contest, the Mr. Sexy Legs contest and the indoor pep rally (that wasn't dampened by the rain). Mason was building up for some- thing big. On the field, the Mustangs kept every- one on the edge of his scat by beating Broad Run and breaking several records. The Mustangs broke a 19 game losing streak and won their first Home- coming game in 5 years. That evening, after the exciting climax of the game, many couples got out on the floor and danced the night away. 67 SCC LEADERSHIP RETREA T Junior girls find iheir own piece of ihe rock. The S.C.C.âs retreat to Camp Shiloh served a multitude of purposes. Along with the annual instruction on parliamentary procedure, there were informal discussions about how people communicate with each other, as well as games geared to problem solving. But the trip wasn't all work and no play. During the day there were many facilities available, from vol- leyball to hiking. At night, a campfire was always burning, and an abundance of marshmallows would be on hand, or a group of rowdies could always find someoneâs cabin to âdeco- rateâ with toilet paper. 68 Mrs. McThingâ CAST Mr . The top of what? Our school? No way, there is still so much more to learn. On top of ourselves? Well, some of us will be: knowing where we re going, what we're going to do and most important, who we are. For us, the climb will be easier. It isn 't necessary' to have your climb planned out step by step. Of course, it would help, but things change, boulders fall, rocks slip, you break a leg. You just need to have an idea of which direction you are heading, and for all of us it should be UP! Sure you might get tired, the path may seem too steep, but to go down now would mean each step was wasted, each sight must be seen over. Why not just stop awhile, take a rest, see how far you have climbed and be proud of what you have accomplished. Then begin again, but dont turn back . . . When you are in complete peace of m ind with yourself and things around you, when your dreams seem more real than ever before, when you feel content, not only with what you have received but for what you have given, then you will ha ve reached the top.
