Every once in a while, elves hang crepe paper and tinfoil all over the gym, and everybody comes to see it. The basketball nets are swung up and hidden. The tile walls and iron railings are ignored. the familiar incongruity of high heels and metal chair legs on the varnished floor white shirts and formals What are the teachers doing here? Everyone and his car is polished, and everything is very different in the dark. You spend your first two years being underfoot and in the ninth grade you decide you're grown up a time for pretending
