His friendliness went much deeper than that. He was always willing to take time from his b usy schedule to discuss with us problems or future plans, all of which proved he was genuinely interested in each of us. Mr. Cox made our year at George Mason more pleasant and profitable with his guidance and leadership. Although Dr. Edwards sometimes had the very unpleasant duty of disciplin- ing us whenever we needed it, we came to appreciate her as a practical psychologist who made us recognize our errors and determine to correct them. leacliers MARGUERITE D. Several senior teachers took advantage of the Old Vic ' s tour at the National Theater and the school ' s recordings of MACBETH and HAMLET. It was quite a season for Shakespeare. Grammar, composition and spelling held their own as usual. Publications were brought under the direction of the English Department and scheduled on class time. Although creative genius cannot always be summoned on schedule, staffs of MUSTANG, TEMPO and LASSO tried to get their work accomplished between 2 and 3 p. m. each afternoon, TOP LEFT: A sophomore student ' s eye-view of Coriolanus at Catliolic University. The latest approach to foreign language teaching as developed by lingiial scientists was used by Mrs. Costa and Mr. Phillips in their classes this year. All the Spanish students were introduced to the audio-lingual” or oral-aural method, which concentrates on spoken words and continual repetition. No textbooks or any form of written symbols were allowed in the classrooms. Much use was made of the language laboratory installed at George Mason in 1960. Using a trial textbook prepared by the School of Mathematics Study Group of Yale University, Mrs. Wheeler in her seventh grade new math class placed emphasis on how and why instead of memorized rules. The seventh graders found their special course challenging. We don ' t just sit down and add up; now we learn the reasons. It ' s fun. The Math Department is also formulating a course for the accelerated juniors to take next year; they have already worked through Algebra I, II, III, Trig, and Solid Geom- etry. Their new challenge will probably be Calculus and Analytic Geometry. The Science Department used much current research material to supplement the science text ' s presentation. Individual student research was encoiiraged and full use was made of the local sci- entists as guest speakers and the near-by points of scientific interest for field trips. Modern dance, posture and body mechanics, and speed-a-way {a combination of field hockey and soccer) were highlights of the Department ' s program. A more intensive driver-training course for ninth graders was also added. The Industrial Arts Department expanded on the seventh and eighth level to include units in leather working and elec- tricity.
