I was talking and reminiscing with my friend, the Iaguar, the other day and we started talking about your two years under his paw, Remember the eighth grade? My, you were scared when you first entered the halls of F.C.H.S. Everything was new-changing classes, teachers, sports, activities, and all those huge seniors, but it was all wonderful when you got used to it. Mrs. Snodgrass helped get you settled and then you were put to work fremember Mr. Ledbetterfs apples in science class?j You beat Fairfax in football. Dick Fruland was high man on the magazine sales totem pole . . . you really bought the stadium that year. That was a great year, you didn't think you'd ever be freshmen, but . . . You were big freshmen and the only difference be- tween this year and last was that you had rougher classes and a football stadium. You gave the May dance and really did it up brown. You began to recognize the seniors -Don Glover and Alice Knight and the Sportsmen fFred Landess and Bob Mclntyrej. You felt you really belonged, so you went to see every football game. Remember HDear Ruth? . . . a scream! You had Miss McBee or Mr. Snod- grass for algebra . , . the qnonset hut for study hall and Miss Roberts. VVasn't Tenny sweet as Alice fin VVonder' landj? Yes, I guess you were sort of sorry to leave there, but new adventure called . . . And it was really new! You were sophomores-a big change-and I, THE MUSTANG, claimed your loyalty. Your school was an old house with lots of rooms fand lots of windowsj. You recognized only a few of the faculty- Mr. Snodgrass, Miss Carnpbell-and you had a new prin- cipal, Mrs. Edwards. Mr. Rockwell, and others made their appearance. Thompson House-and you got away with murder! ! There weren't very many of you but you man- aged to take Mr. Miller's biology classes apart. Buttons Yarbrough was president of the class and you gave the Glitter Cafe Dance-the first dance in my history. Re- member the tea dances and the snow days? You played touch football and adopted me as your mascot-you even named your yearbook after me! Our first undefeated sea- son-weren't those peprallys fun? You had Miss Owens for Latin and English fremember V irgil's birthday party?j Howard Iohnson's was close-you really ran that place! Basketball was wonderful fremember the buses to the games and the one that broke down?j. Remember the parties and at least one slumber party a week? You started a newspaper, and put on some one-act plays fremember Shakespeare's Ladies and lim Arnold alias the Vxfhitc Phantom?j. Superlatives for the whole school and your class was well represented. Barbara Lee was Sweetheart. The magazine sale was a huge success fit put out the yearbookj. VV e played baseball and had a swell track team, the girls played softball. You did just about everything that any other school in the area had done in many more years than one! Mr. Crain exemplified the spirit that you had that year and you've kept it. Our band was new- Dr. Scholl did an amazing job. Everything was new and fun . . . You just couldnft wait to be . . . Iuniors! A new school! GM was a reality! Mr. Little became your new administrative head . . . Mrs. Quani, Miss Coleman, and Miss March were added to your faculty, as was Mr. DePasquale. You really had to work that year, Page 3 8 but you still had fun, The school was dedicated with a fitting ceremony and the dedication dance was even more fun. You played tackle football and made me really proud. The band marched at home games, played at the F.C.H.S. field, and started its campaign for uniforms. Nancy Allen was football queen, and were you proud to have a queen from your class! Ilallowe'cn was scary as usual, but the big dance held at school was wonderful-the Recreation Dc- partment of the City footed the bill. The Shipwreck Dance was another scream-remember all those funny looking fish? Basketball season and we collected our first trophies -District and Regional champs. Miss Phelps took us to Gettysburg to see the battlefield-some of us saw more of each other than the battlefield. You gave radio plays and f'Our Town was presented in the spring. You started the Palette-another first! Remember the field-clearing Ceveryone worked to get a football field for you to play on with Mr. Yarbrough as the guiding lightl, and the PTA Hobby Show? And thc day you got your class rings? That was a mad day! Barbara Zimmer was Sweetheart and the May Queen was Nancy Altfather. Remember the Chinese auctions? Mr. Meneely and Miss Cockrill spon- sored you. You put on the Christmas Dance and the Prom-oh, yes, the Prom! The blue and silver trees were really unique fremembcr the broken loveseat?j, that false ceiling sure was tough-Peg Payne was queen. Remember Carol Newinan's party before and l7in's after? Rare! The SCA elections, Bob VVilson was elected prexy and every other office except one ended in your hands. Then, Grad- uation! All your senior friends were alumni, and you were . . . Seniors! Gee, a senior and you felt just as you did when you were juniors fmaybe that's because you didnft have any privileges except 'Lto go to schoolnj. You had a terrific football season-a perfect one for a senior year. Miss Zukunft arrived and took over the paper, Mr. Scanga, Dr. Davis and Mr. Sniegoski came to the science labs. Mr. Harmon, who arrived full of ideas, and Mrs. Locko- wandt, who came to the Home Ee. Department, were elected your class sponsors. Tenny laekson was Ilome- coming Queen. Remember the Newcomers' Dance spon- sored by the SCA? Christmas and the usual array of parties and the big dance, a huge success. A new wing of classrooms was added and the partitions removed from the gym about that time. fRemembcr invitations and measuring for caps and gowns?Q Then tryouts for HThe Hasty Heart. You put on the Sweetheart Dance with Betty Cline as Sweetheart. Basketball went the same way as football-perfect-so did baseball and track. The Cafe Dance was delightful and de-lighted! The Prom and sur- rounding festivities were just as was to be expected. And then-graduation-alumni I ! ! ! ! Now, I, the fkfustang, will have ff-, r fM?2 . 5f'rsf'rfr'f' to let go of you. Gee, 1t7S been ,BQ 'SQ xc., L ,- i wonderful. I hate to see you go. My 4 , only consolation is that there will be Q more just as f'neat to take your place. Now, don't ever forget mc QI don't think you will- we'vc shared too X many experiencesj and I won't forget you. Good luck always to a class worthy of the name HGeorge Mason fand mine toolj. YARBROUCH The MUS'l'iXNG Staff Wishes to join in a Well-deserved tribute extended to an out- standing citizen of Falls Church at the first game ever played on the Ceorge Mason Ath- letic Field. Before the kickott in the Hern- don game, Oct. 3, l953, Bob VVilson, Presi- dent of the Student Body, on behalf of the Falls Church School Board, the faculty and students of Ceorge Mason Iunior-Senior High School, presented a plaque to Mr. Iolm C. Yarbrough in recognition of the services that he and other citizens of Falls Church had given to Ceorge Mason Iunior-Senior High School. The existence of the Ceorge Mason Field on that day was due primarily to Mr. Yarbrouglfs leadership in the difficult taslc of clearing away the forest which had stood there l5 months before. The plaque read: HPresented to john C , Yarbrough whose vision and months of toil contributed so much to providing a home field for the George lllason teams, and whose efforts will benefit the whole commu- nityf' Presented by The Falls Church School Board, faculty and students. Cctober 3, 1953. Page 40 SPGRTS A flash of red and white at the dressing room door. Up jump the Cheerleaders as Chaos breaks loose from the Crowded stands. Another game is underway. How often during this past year have we felt that sudden burst of enthusiasm upon eatehing the first glimpse of our Mustang team as it runs on the Held? Yes, sports play an important part around George Mason. Girls and boys of all grades engage in the ae- tivities. Those not on the playing Held lend vital sup- port from the stands, led by three squads of snappy eheerleaders. There is always a large platoon of parents and friends present at all games, eheering and supplying transportation wherever neeessary. Remember those long hours of football praetiee way back in August? The boys tried to beat the sun, hurrying to praetiee before its heat drove them off. Goaehes Grain and Layer had them working like Crazy during those early autumn months. They had to run the eobwebs out of sleepy minds and bodies to be in Utip-top shape for the Coming engagements. And that training paid off in Hne style. The boys tore through Distriet G, taking the Group Ill title with only a single loss against 9 wins. The Mustangs opened the season with vietories over Aldie and Leesburg, then Celebrated the dedieation of their new Held in grand style, swamp- iiig Herndon 45-7. Lineoln fell next, but Osbourn proved to be too tough for the Mustangs to eraek. The Page 41 SPCDRTS team sprang back, though, to win five straight: XVarren- ton, Nlarshall, Oecoquan, VVakefield, and finally, on Homecoming Day, a 46-O victory over King C-eorge. Several Mustangs were chosen for All-Star teams by various newspapers. These were: Iohn Taskcr, Iohn Yarbrough, Buddy Taskcr, Ray Rollins, Bob VVilson, and Ray Peterson. Coach Crain also received an award. He was pre- sented with the Universal Sports Corporations Coach- of-the-Year trophy at the Championship banquet in December. Other trophy winners were: Dave Harrison, Most lmproved Lineman, Terp Palmer, Most lmproved Back, lohn Yarbrough, Outstanding Lineman, and, lohn Tasker, Most Valuable Player. The football season saw the formation of a Iunior Varsity football team. Under the direction of Coaches Rockwell and Scanga, the Little 'Mustangs won one, lost three, and tied one. Geddes, Blowers and Czcchf anski were outstanding and show promise for next yearls Varsity. Remember how eagerly we prepared for basketball season? The boys had a title to protect and we were going to back them all the way. Coach Crain's squad had a lot of familiar faces on it. Seven of last yearls champs had returned-taller, faster, more experienccdg they looked mighty good. Coach must have felt good, too, when he found a good, strong bench. The team was red hot. Coach Crain's squad rolled to victory in their first eight contests until Cvar-Field upset them by four points. Undannted, they downed six of their next seven opponents, losing only to Coolidge High of VVashington. Mustang hopes for a repeat championship were shattered in the first round of the District G Tourna- ment by a Hredfup Leesburg team set to avenge their tournament loss to C1lVl last year. The hflustangs were again defeated by Car-Field in the consolation game of the tourney. The Wfasliiiigtoii Post honored the Mustangs by rating them l5th in the VVashington area. lt selected Iohn Tasker as one of its Players-of-the-VVeek and placed him on its All-Suburban Virginia first team. Bill Berger, Ralph Havens, and David Smith received Hon- orable Mention. Page 42 SPGRTS Not to be outdone by the boys, the girls' basket- ball team came through with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. They broke even in two games with league- leading Nokesville and also with VVarrenton, while de- feating Occoquan twice. They beat their rivals from Herndon twice in exciting games, and then dropped their Hnal game to Herndon. Indy Fruland finished the season with an average of Z6 points per game and set a school record, scoring 39 points at VVarrenton. As a result of their fine record, the girls won a place in the District Tournament also. In the first game, the tall Lovettesville team got the rebounds and went on to win. The following day, the Fillies swamped Nokesville to wind up in the third place. Indy Fruland was placed on the All-District team. The junior Varsity basketball team under Coach Rockwell ran hot and cold. They won three of their first four games and then dropped three in a row. Then they got hot and went on to three final victories end- ing the season with a 6-4 record. Hot prospects for next years Varsity are Capper and Peterson. Modine falls into the A'Most Improvement category. Perhaps the most promising team this year was Coach Ballengec's seventh and eighth grade basketball squad which ripped through eight games without a loss. In bright red uniforms, cheered on by six spirited cheer- leaders and many spectators, the team displayed line control and ability. Iim Ricketts and Tony Hodges ap- pear to be outstanding prospects for next year's Iayvce. VVith the basketball season over, George Mason boys prepared for a fast year in track, under Coach Scanga, hoping to equal last year's undefeated record. VV ith Bob lleeter, Mike Hodges, Ralph Havens, Ray Peterson and Bill Ieffrey coming back, the Hying Mus- tangs looked good. A IV team was formed to give the many freshman runners a chance to try their wings. VVarmer weather brought out the baseball bug and boys and girls alike prepared to better the previous sea- sonls record under the fine leadership of Coaches Bal- lengee and Cockrill. Having lost little from graduation last year, and with many new players, both teams had the benefit of experience. VVe've had some wonderful times, haven't we? I say Hwef' because I'm with you on everything. A fcw days ago, when I'd stayed late after school, I started thinking of all the things we'd done. As I walked down the hall, the place just didn't seem the same with everyone gone. The only sounds I heard were the voices of the faculty as they echoed through the empty halls. Floyd was there, pushing his faithful broom, and Frances was busy with her Vkfindex Spray, getting GM cleaned up for another busy day. Somehow I got to thinking of that day last fall when I entered GM to begin another year. As I looked through the doors to the gym, I couldnlt see the stage. There were big partitions blocking my view, and people were all around mc. One little girl walked by me, and I could see that she was trying to hold back tears. No one could blame her, because everywhere she looked there were big people who could hardly understand her position-a very con- fused member of the incoming seventh grade. XVe were never as proud of our school as we were the day they dedicated our football field. There were so many reasons to be proud. Our own fathers had been out there with shovels, axes, picks, rakes, and their bare hands and had cleared the field. Mr. Yarbrough worked over- time, laying sod to get it ready for the dedication. And our band, decked out in their new red and white uniforms, made every one of us beam as they marched around the Held. Remember the Hallowe'en Dance? The S C A and the Recreation Department provided a wonderful time for all the little kids in Falls Church, as well as the high school students, and a safe Halloween was enjoyed by all. As usual, George Mason carrie through with a big success in the magazine drive. As a result, GM fans can sit on comfortable bleachers during their coming football seasons. Homecoming brought a great weekend. GMHS boasted the title of District G Champs, and the dance was the most to say the least. I'll bet Tenny jackson was the first queen in history to be crowned twice--once at the game, and again at the dance, but who could de- serve it more? Then the girls got football fever, and a big laugh was had by all. The Georgettes and the Masonettes, boasting lines almost as heavy as the boys-had a rock-cm sock-em game that would make many boys wince. One of the Uneatestl' times of every year is just be- fore Christmas, and this year was no exception. Classes were broken up, mysterious bells were heard and steadies were so sweet to one another. The Junior Dramatics Club was in a tizzy about their 'fChristmas Eve Letter, and financial groans were heard everywhere. The Christmas Dance launched us on ten exciting days, with dances and parties almost every night, and then we awoke bright and early on january fourth to return to our 'fhoinefl But strangely enough we were glad. On our return we found that a touch of color had been added to the pastel walls of George Mason: our football team! VVhat other school can you name whose football moms would buy the team bright red sweaters to display their sons, award letters? Page S2 idlfory Exams -what confusion. Snow closed school for four days-four very welcome days for those who needed to study-but Poplar Drive was so great for sledding! Inst look at the gym! There had been a basketball game played there a few nights before, but on the night of the Sweetheart Dance it looked like a ballroom, and the crowning of the Sweetheart of George Mason High left Betty Cline in the memories of all who attended. And then came the basketball tournaments. For these games, all George Mason nearly went 'fberserkn trying to get rides. As usual, the turnout really displayed the school spirit of our fans. Remember sitting on the floor at Manassas? Remember all those cute little hearts running around the halls and on peoples lapels? Then you remember t'The Hasty Heart put on by the Senior Dramatics Club. 'ACharley,s Aunt, put on by the junior Dramatics Club helped to give the junior High quite a bit of recog- nition. This play, following HThe Hasty Heart, sure helped the business at Howard Iohnson's. Imagine-high school activities five nights in a row, followed by a jaunt to Howard's where almost everyone ends up eventually. March 19th brought more activities from the junior High. The Eighth Grade Dance was held on that night. The following night found GM in a state of pandemonium --The Pandemonium Ball, and everyone let himself go! XVhy is it that everyone seems to enjoy a minstrcl show so much? I guess 'cause it's crazy entertainment for everyone, a welcome change from everyday life. But this year it was held in a more organized manner than before, due to the direction of Mr. De and an able junior Class. Springtime brought so many activities, it seemed im- possible for us to attend all of them, yet many of us made an honest effort. There was the Sophomore Class filled Garter Cafe Dance, and almost before we knew it, Prom time rolled around. This was what the Seniors had been waiting for thc whole year. But exciting as it may seem, they would rather have been just starting, I know. After this would come Graduation, Baccalaureate, and then it would be all over. So, with great expectations, we entered the doors of thc new school and went straight into the gym. Everywhere there were white dresses. A faint odor of white roses filled the room, which you could never guess to be the gym. YVe never noticed all the crepe paper which covered the ceil- ing, or the band which played that marvelous music. Vile knew that everything was perfect-that it was the kind of Prom weld always dreamed of. All too soon the band played 'fGoodnight Sweetheart and we found that this big evening on which thc juniors had slaved for the past two years was over, and at this moment we realized it was worth every cent, every streamer, and every hourls work. Yes, it sure would be great to relive this year. I'd like to attend all the dances wc had, see all the games, take part in all the wonderful times we had in our clubs and with our friends. But this year is over, and we must bring it to an end. Next year will be even more wonderful!
