VOLUME LI FALL EDITION NEWBERG, OR 97132 GEORGE FOX COLLEGE • 1 THANKS r— ELIZABETH CAREY MINAS Mention the name Elizabeth Carey Minas to a GFC student and the first thing he or she probably thinks of is the academic scholarships given in her name. However, the dedication and commitment Elizabeth Carey Minas shows for George Fox College is far more valuable than the $30,000 given each year to deserving students. Every weekday since 1971, this 76 year old lady has voluntarily worked in Shambaugh Library giving a half- day of her valuable service. Minas was a professional librarian for 37 years, but today she selflessly contributes her talents with exem- plary loyalty to the Col- lege. Her association with GFC is not limited to the last 14 years, however. She attended the school from 1927-29, and her father served as Presi- dent from 1947-50. For the willingness to serve and loyalty to the college for over 50 years, L ' Ami would like to ex- tend a special thanks to Elizabeth Carey Minas. 12 • SPECIAL THANKS TIM TSOHANTARIDIS Tim Tsohantaridis, or Mr. T , as the soccer team affectionate- ly calls him, has become a living inspiration for GFC. His vivid stories from his childhood seem to challenge each listener to evaluate what living for Christ means. But more importantly, Tim Tsohantaridis has become a vital part of our campus. Filling the place of Ron Crecelius was a tremendous task, but Tim did not look at it that way. For him it meant another way to serve Christ. And that is exactly what Tim has done. Thanks, Mr. T for serving God here at Fox! RON CRECELIUS Ron Crecelius had been a chaplin for 18 years before he moved in to the title of Chaplain Emeritus in 1985. He now devotes his time to speaking and ministering through- out the West. He graduated from Fox with two degrees, earned a masters from both Western Evangelical Semi- nary and Pasadena College. The students who knew him as their chaplain - loved him. The stu- dents who now know him as Chap- lain Emeritus - love him. The L ' ami staff tip their hats to Ron Crecelius and his endeavors here at George Fox College. May he have many more years of good counsel, ministry, and Joy at Fox. God loves you, Ron, have a good day. We saw a celebration of hope for the country following the overthro of President- for-live, Jean Claude Duvalier, hope for a leader con- cerned about meeting the needs of the proletariat and not merely amassing her his personal wealth. We saw the Christian Church in Haiti caring for the needs of the whole person. We worked on a reforesta- tion project with the Haitian Christian Development Fund. This kind of Christian community development with the teaching that Jesus is the One who can meet every human need, embodies the real hope for Haiti. The talented cast brought to life the magic of the Fairie Kingdom in a colorful forest setting, as well as portraying the pomp of royalty in the courts of Athens. It was a magical trip for all, and as Di- rector Darlene Graves prom- ised, a great remedy for those midwinter blues. « . DREAM ' SCREWTAPE In ' Screwtape we ridiculed the materialistic philosophy declared in the name of realism. We must continually create and live out the alternative provided by Satan. ' s En- emy, who ' leaves us to carry out from the will alone, duties which have lofct all relish. ' He wants us to learn to walk, and must therefore take away His hand. ' Since He is pleased as long as we keep trying, we must redouble our efforts to break through the gloom of Satan ' s kingdom. This means breaking Sa- tan ' s rules and extending love to a young colleague, our political en- emy, a nagging mother, or an un- ruly son. Love is the antidote for the Pit of alienation which is the result of our selfishness. If ' Screw- tape ' did anything, I hope it em- powered people and showed that our love, our prayers, our work can make a difference. We are joined together in the Light before which all devils must retreat. — Tim Peters 1. ' s first music theatre production of the year was Oklahoma by Rodgers and Hammerstein . Jennie Spada, a ju- nior, portrayed the role of Aunt Eller, Raelyn Godfrey, a freshman, was Laurey Williams, and Darla Tuning, a sopho- more, played Ado Annie Carnes. Mark Duhrkoop, a sophomore, played Andrew Carnes, Annie ' s father, Tim Oppen- lander, a sophomore, was Ali Hakim, the peddler man, and Dave Unis, a fresh- man, played the mean and nasty Jud Fry. Will Parker, the cowboy, was played by freshman Jon Bilderback and Curly, was Laurey ' s sweetheart, was played by freshman Drake Toombs. The cast also included about thirty chorus members. As usual, the sets, which were de- signed by Tim Oppenlander, turned out beautifully. They also provided several late-night construction sessions for the cast. Of the four performances, of the show, closing night provided the most fun for the cast. Many unexpected things occurred, a rubber chicken and feathers falling from the ceiling of Bauman Audi- torium and the Elixir of Egypt ' s great increase in size being only two of the jokes. Oklahoma was a fun show for ev- eryone, and overall, it was one of the best done in recent years. 1. Will {Jon Bilderback) and Ado Annie (Darla Tuning) decide they must give their relationship All ' er Nuthin! 2. Jud (Dave Unis) is tired of being single in his Lonely Room. 3. The group was founded ten years ago and has since developed a variety of vignettes to fit every occasion. This year ' s troupe consists of eight very talented actors and musicians. In keeping with Inter-mis- sion ' s theme, Provoking thought, promot- ing talk, Inter-mission is a definite learn- ing experience. They have had the opportu- nity to share their faith and talent through- out the Northwest as well as traveling to Hawaii the past two years. INTERMISSION • 65 MADRIGAL DINNER George Fox College ' s fifth an- nual Madrigal Dinner - Ye Olde Royal Feaste - took place on the nights of Dec. 5-7, 1985. A Christmas celebration in the merrie olde English tradition transformed the Heacock Com- mons into a scene from the Elizabethan age. The two-hour program opened with a procession of singers and included a royal toast from the wassail and the carrying in of a boar ' s head. The evening consisted of: music played by professionals on their own Renaissance instruments, brass fanfares, antics by a court jester (and the page), magic by a court wizard, dancing, lighth- earted madrigal singing, a hand- bell chorus, and inspirational medieval and Renaissance Christmas carols. The Madrigal Dinner was put on by the G.F.C. Chorale and Chamber Singers. Dr. John Bowman was the musical direc- tor and Robin Carmichael (who played Queen Elizabeth) worked with the dancers and gave all of the stage drama direction. 1. Queen Elizabeth and members of the court sing some traditional carols. 2. During final rehearsal LaVonna prac- tices her manners while Tim Oppen- lander is ' jest ' not in the mood. 3. Lords and ladies of the court dance for the queen. 4. The page (Jon Bilderback) and the jester entertain the court with a few antics. 5. Dress rehearsal - last chance to get it right! 6. This group, known on campus at ASCGFC, or Angry Student Communists of GFC, demanded a ransom of 1,000 cans of food for the needy to be placed on the chapel stage. Fortunately for the President, who had reportedly been tortured in the ASCGFC of- fices, the food was provided by faculty and students. Other practical jokes this year included the decoration of several offices, including (from left) The Crescent office, the L ' Ami office (including a yearbook design on the floor), and Tom Head ' s office. BRUIN CHEERLEADERS CFORCF FOX 81 This year ' s volleyball season was a rollercoaster year with the uphill fight and downhill slide. Though this years team was inexperienced, being 50% freshman, they put forth a valiant effort to match the success of last year. The team members were frustrated at times, but were devoted to each other and the team was held together. The fun times, like riding home in the van from the Southern Oregon State Tournament, made it a good year. We stopped at Rice Hill twice. Between ice-cream and a hard season, we learned the meaning of commitment in our lives for more than volleyball. Mary Erbele 82 • VOLLEYBALL 1. But don ' t let the record fool you, with a little luck and a few breaks, the Bruins could ' ve easily been 1-0-6. In all but 2 of the 11 losses, the young team was ahead or tied with their opponents at halftime. But inexperience proved to be the Bruin ' s own worst enemy as they gave up 9 losses, 2 in overtime, in the final 45 minutes. The youngest team in the league, G.F.C. had 7 freshmen starters, and only 5 returning players from last year ' s squad. A knee injury about mid- way through the season to sophomore goalkeeper, Jim Quatier, thrust Jr., Steve Cammack, into a po- sition that he ' d never played. Thanks to some coaching from Quatier, and a lot of hard work, Cammack was named the NCCAA District all- Tournament goalie, as well as the squad ' s Most Improved Player award. Also named to the all- Tournament 1st team were freshmen Andy La- Veine, and Steve Benson. Receiving Honorable Mention honors were 3 Freshmen: Tim Hyatt, Rich Renner, and Dan Seale, who was also chosen by the team as the Best Defensive Player. Paul Beck, an all-tournament coach was named the Most Valu- able Player and the Best Offensive Player for the Bruins. The next few years look promising for George Fox Soccer. With the addition of new head coach Tim Tsohantaridis, and the return of 16 out of 17 of this years squad, the Bruins should be a top con- tender in the next few years. 1. Bruin Soccer Team. Twenty new school records were also set. The team averaged 83.6 point a game, and topped the 100 point level five times. In district competition, GFC was 18-7 reaching the semifinals before bowing 76-67 to Oregon Tech. In the NCCAA playoffs GFC ' s season ended with a 65-61 loss at Western Baptist; going into the game GFC was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NCCAA. The majority of this year ' s awards went to Kenny Stone, a 6-6 junior forward. Stone was named an NAIA All American, being selected to the third team. He was the Number One player for All- Northwest small college team. Stone also received the NAIA District 2 Player of the Year Award, one that usually goes to a senior. For the second straight year, he was named NCCAA regional MVP and Ail- American. Stone was also named GFC ' s MVP. GFC has a good 1986-87 season to look forward to; five of this year ' s starters are returning. A flying leap by Les Harrison gains two points for the Bruins. 86 • BASKETBALL WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL t Wilma Dupee Stacie Chandler Traci Young Tammy Lewis Susie Davis Diane Walter Craig Taylor Kristy Boatman Marianne Funderhide LaShawna Elston Laura Hendricks Jodi Lander Suzi Attridge Jennifer Bearse By ending with a 14-13 season record and gaining a NAIA District 2 playoff berth, GFC Lady Bruin Basketball Coach Craig Taylor says he accom- plished his 1985-86 goals. The season was a success in Taylor ' s eyes; George Fox was one of only five teams in the district with winning seasons. The key part of the season, according to Taylor, was an ex- cursion to Southern Oregon. The team matured a lot and learned what it was like to win on the road, especially when under pressure. The Lady Bruins beat Oregon Tech and SOSC to earn a district play- off spot. No individual awards were given this year. Tay- lor feels they are anti-productive; he prefers to em- phasize team work. However, there were two post- season awards given. Susie Davis and Tammy Lew- is were named to the district ' s Honorable Mention All-District team. Taylor considered this year as one of learning for the best, most talented group of freshmen he ' s ever had. These newcomers will hopefully be able to replace graduating starters Diane Walter and Laura Hendricks. Susie Davis shoots the ball as her teamma tes await a rebound. 88 • BASKETBALL 1. At the NAIA District 2 championships the Bruins finished fifth, not quite what Coach Al- len had hoped for. I ' m really positive about the year, Allen said. We competed well and stayed right in there. Jerred Gildehaus was the team ' s strongest indi- vidual this year. He won the District championship and went to Tennessee to finish 27th in the nation- als. Gildehaus missed All-American designation by just five seconds. Jerred also received the MVP award from GFC. This year ' s Most Inspirational Award was shared by Gildehaus and Dwight Larabee. The Most Im- proved Award went to freshman Larry LaFleur, of whom coach Allen said was promising for the fu- ture. Running is a good workout for Dan Price. 90 • CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY • 91 SENIOR EDITORS PAGES . . . This year has not been the proverbial piece of cake that any of us had hoped for.
