Text from Pages 1 - 86 of the 1985 volume:

Jesus Christ, a familagkcho in our ears. A perma- nent personality on our campus. He is alive and very much a part of our heritage. Christ is seen in the obvious facets of day to day living such as Chap- el, activities, and leadership. More importantly Christ sparkles in the smile of Ron Crecelius or Glenn McNeil ' s positive personality and excite- ment for the Lord. Christ is the heartbeat of this campus. He works for the good of the many through the individual. He uses us as his soundingboard for the conviction of ourselves and others. A different attribute of this year has been a steady renewal. People were impressed with our personal- ities at the beginning of the year. Were the impres- sions lasting ones? The theme Christ Alive was chosen to exem- plify every area of this college, and every area of our lives. God ' s desire for us is to lean on his under- standing and love one another. Christ lives, because of his love for us. This theme should be seen in our lives as well. One of the most admired fea- tures on the campus is the faculty and staff. People are proud of a president who works for the stu- dents in his actions and decisions. The teachers who work here are committed to Christ. Many have given up worldly gain and opened themselves up to the students needs. Chris is alive in GFC faculty and staff. Administration ft HOOVER ADMINISTRATION My desire is that every student would experience the personal love and reality of Christ in their lives, both here and in their lives after Fox. And that each student would take the risk of getting off the highway of life to enter the back roads in peoples lives. I would like the students to know that I have a deep love and admi- ration for them. I believe in them. I ' d like to thank them for letting me be a part of their lives. Deb Lacey 8 It was really interesting to me to see the sincere commitment and concern that the teachers have for the students. I knew it as a student, but to see the teachers in fervent prayer for the students gave me a look at our teachers behind the scenes. Not only the teachers, but the Business Manager, the President, the Dean of Students and all of the Administration really do care about our students. My ministry is to point students towards an en- vironment where they can be nurtured in the Lord through friendships, academics and spiritu- al learning. Movies, clubs, student government, concerts, or plays are offered weekly. One of the most outstanding quali- ties of these is the presence of Christ. Christ oriented programs such as Celebration, Chapel, fellowship cycle, discipleship, or summer missionary programs provide growth opportuni- ties. Not only through Christ, but through each other. FRESHMEN ORIENTATION The Freshman class and Transfer stu- dents started their new school year off by moving on campus a few days before the returning students came back. Sunday, Sep- tember 30, was a busy day for these new students as they moved into their dorms, met roommates for the first time, and got acquainted with the campus. The next few days were filled with class scheduling, mu- sic auditions, placement tests, the Presi- dent ' s Reception and Dinner, and the ASCGFC party. The class of 1988 came on campus with real excitement and a lot of class spirit. Their enthusiasm and love for God has shown through, as they eagerly trusted God for a good year at GFC. BROMCOONIRY VICTORIES AT FOX CTORIES: Dean Judson, Allen Hilton, Marcie Sanders, and Sharon Gilmore were the champi- ons in the 1984 College Bowl. Craig Littlefield and Sharon Gilmore received their gallon pins in the blood drive held at GFC on November 1. Arin Mares was found to have a severe muscle deterioration disease. Doctors said she could possibly lose her life or be in a wheel chair for the rest of her life. A special faith healing service was held for her at her church. When she returned to her doctor, all evidence of the disease had vanished. 1 John 5:4 NIV ASSOCIATED STUDENT COMl Allen Hilton, the ASCGFC student body president, has set goals that he ' d like to see accomplished this year. He ' d like to see students get more involved in making academic decisions. That ' s why the student academic committee has been formed. Allen would like to raise social awareness among George Fox stu- dents. To help accomplish this goal Anthony Campolo was brought in for a chapel service at the beginning of fall term. Another goal he has is to raise in- terest in student government. This goal, however, will not be realized until spring elections are held. One goal, which is a continuing goal every year, is to increase communication between students and faculty. The last very important goal that Allen has is to have Kool-Aide in every drinking fountain. Crescent Darkroom HOME EC. CLUB The Home Ec. club is not just a club for Home Ec. ma- jors, anyone can join. They want to make students aware that home economics is not just cooking and sewing. There are many career op- tions with a Home Ec. major. The Home Ec. club provides care packages to students twice a term which both gives students a nice treat and raises money for the club. They have fashion shows twice a year and each spring the club goes to the Oregon Home Ec. Association con- vention. EDUCATION CLUB The Education Club ' s main goal is to keep in contact with all education Majors, telling them about educa- tion in Oregon State as well as in our school. The club holds seminars once a month, and anyone is welcome to come. Home Economics Club: Leslie Bayha, Lucinda Classen, Angie Dunn, Loree Edens, Cindy Kline, and Sharon Schulz. Encourage- ment comes in the form of monthly meetings, which have guest speakers lec- turing on topics varying from math and physics to biology. Another purpose of Sigma Zeta is to recognise the acheive- ment of high scholarship among those fitted for membership in the society. The most dramatic way this is done is in sending a senior to present his or her research project to the national meeting which is in April. While being active in academics, Sigma Zeta is also involved with fund raising, outings, and most im- portantly, setting up an atmosphere where students of science can get togeth- er and have a fun time. Sigma Zeta was founded in 1925, George Fox College ' s Beta chapter was founded in 1978. Our chapter has the distinction of being the only Sigma Zeta club on the west coast. This in addition to location, administrative, and image changes, this is the story of our radio station KFOX. Under the careful direction of 6 year veteran to Contemporary Christian music, Program Director, Terry Dawson, the radio station underwent the most dramatic changes in its 10 year history. During the 1984-85 school year, FM89 established itself as a driving force in student commu- nication, as well as a student ministry organization on campus. The administrative staff included Ron West, General Business Manager. Supporting staff included Lorri Rittierodt, Administrative Assistant, Kyle Fen- ton, Operations Manager, and Dan Hyatt, Programing Intern, and Program Director for the 85-86 School year, Terry Dawson also served as Designer and Com- mercial Radio consultant for the station. A prime example would be the volleyball and cross country teams. Both went to na- tionals for the Christian Confer- ence. Not only do the Teams here have victory on the score board, but vic- tory for Christ. Many use their high visibility to witness for Christ. The coaches lead with the idea of serving God. Christ is victo- rious and alive in GFC sports. GFC had a soccer program once be- fore, but it was discontinued. If the win-loss record is all that is considered, it would be said we did not have a winning season. The win-loss record is not what deter- mines success. As a team, we set three goals: 1) To be a witness for God. 2) To have a unified team, and become close friends. 3) To be com- mitted 100% to the soccer team, to be the best team we can be. With these as our criterions, we were successful. Because we did not win as much as we would liked to have won, it was easy at times to become discouraged. Coach Berry and other members of the team did a good job of not allowing any one to stay de- pressed. This was a growing year for us, we learned a lot about soccer and how to glorify God through athlet- ics. The student body can look for- ward to a stronger team next year. They both made the student body proud of their efforts. For the first time we had a womens team, Marcia and Kay were our only teammembers, but they started a new tradition, Womens Cross Country at George Fox College. 44 Men ' s Cross Country Coach Rich Allen Kevin Ball Scott Ball Jerred Gidehaus Jeff Guzman Tom Heaton Dwight Larabee Mark Protzman Ron Roley Women ' s Cross Country Coach Rich Allen Kay Mattson Marcia Snow Cross Country INTRAMURALS Intramurals, whether basket- ball, football or powder puff were enjoyed by many this year. This year the different sports are becoming more popular and ex- citing to watch. Students were able to, through all the rivalries, go head to head almost like enemies. Then after the game they were able to go laugh and joke about their insignificant squabbles. Intramurals 4 The students here are of an ex- ceptional caliber. Most are witty and intelligent, and all are extreme- ly outgoing. The first thing a visi- tor notices are smiling faces and homey hellos . The dorm exper- ience cultivates bonds in the men and women. Active lobbies provide for commuters to enter into the same types of relationships. Best of all, Christ is Alive in the individ- ual. Someone is always there to grant a smile, lift a needy head, and hold a hand. Thank you Christ for living in our hearts and taking our burdens. The reason I say this is we have been given basically one more chance at a yearbook without making the school pay off a deficit. Going back a few years to 1935 the L ' Ami was started to be a book to retain memories of your college years. The first L ' Ami for Georg e Fox College, or at that time Pacific College, was an outgrowth of freshman inspiration, and was the first yearbook ever published in the Quaker School. The name L ' Ami was chosen in a contest in 1935 that the yearbook staff had with the stu- dents. L ' Ami is a French word that means, The Friend. The yearbook has gone through many Tri- als and Tribulations in the last 50 years. Deficits in the last ten years even caused the school to close down production for one year (1983-84). The L ' Ami is back now, and hope- fully to stay. I personally would like to Thank you for your support and patience. The ' 84- ' 85 yearbook staff hopes that this is one of the biggest memories of GFC you carry with you in the future. Editing a Yearbook? A year ago just thinking about Terry Dawson ' s suggestion made me laugh. I then took the proposal to pray ' r and I was Called to do this. When production started, I was my normal unorganized self, but I knew at that time I had to organize myself and get the job done. I ' m fin- ished with the book now, and in looking back on what I ' ve done; and done only with the help of an excellent pair of Asst. Editors, David and Kasey, and a marvelous staff of ten very helpful people, I can really say I enjoyed being editor. I would also like to thank you, the students, for helping me through this year by putting up with my one week ' s notice on all important pictures. My pray ' r for you is that Christ Stays Alive on our campus and in you, so that because of our witness others learn about God, and take Him as their own. I would like to close with a statement that has meant alot to me this year: I can do all things through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 In Christ ' s Love, Ralph J. Sprout Editor I remember the day Ralph, Kasey, and I sat in the office choosing the theme. We spent more time laugh- ing and joking than doing business. I remember Shawna Chandler coming over from her office won- dering what we were doing. In that meeting we finally decided on our theme of Christ Alive. We were so excited! We did the first deadline and it was a snap. I thought to myself, this is going to be easy! I remember the second deadline, that fell during midterms, fall term. I remember how hard it was printing all the pictures, trying to help the staff, and keeping up with all my homework. I remember the words I QUIT! I so desparately wanted to quit, several times, but I made a year commitment. A lot of times were really difficult, but someday I will remember and say I hope God got you Ralph Sprout! No, I ' m only joking! Seriously though I am glad I have been an editor, even in the hard times. This book will be a great memory of Fox for me of people, fun times, dorm life, and how Christ works on our campus. I have one last thing to say, it is from the Bible: Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing. I Thessalonians 5:11 Let this book bring you great memories of your times at Fox and every time you look at this book- REMEMBER ME! In His Love, David Bruce Kinsella The day is done, and the darkness Falls from the wings of Night, As a feather is wafted downward From an eagle in his flight. I see the lights of the village Gleam through the rain and the mist, And a feeling of sadness comes O ' er Me that my soul cannot resist: A feeling of sadness and longing, that is not akin to pain, And resembles sorrow only As the mist resembles the rain. Come, read to me some poem, Some simple and heartfelt lay, That shall soothe this restless feeling And banish the thoughts of day. Not from the grand old masters. Not from the bards sublime, Who distant footsteps echo Through the corridors of Time. For, like strains of marital music, Their mighty thoughts suggest Life ' s endless toil and endeavor; And tonight I long for rest. Read from some humble poet, Whose songs gushed from his heart, As showers from the clouds of summer, Or tears from the eyelids start; Who, through long days of labor, And nights devoid of ease, Still heard in his soul the music Of wonderful melodies. Such songs have power to quiet The restless pulse of care, And come like the benediction That follows after prayer. Then read from the treasured volume The poem of thy choice. And lend to the rhyme of the poet The beauty of thy voice. And the night shall be filled with music, And the cares, that infest the day, Shall fold thek tents, like the Arabs, and as silently steal away. -Longfellow . . ■ . then make my joy complete by being lik love, being one in spirit and pur inded, having the same I — The purpose of this book had not been only to reviv e memories but to stir in us the fact that Christ had a large part of our lives here. He is the one who set this campus apart. Like a team that works together well and wins, so do the students and George Fox College. Christ is our manager and he gave us the best playbook there ever was. The most amazing thing is that no matter what walk of life someone comes from, he has already been recruited and wears the team uniform. Christ is the one part of this campus that we all share in common and we are able to fellowship with strangers who may or may not know Him. Christ Alive was chosen for this very reason. No matter what aspect of this college one looks at, the one common goal they share is a striving to serve Christ in their actions. Corinthians speaks emphatically about being united in spirit, love, and peace. Our goal was to show you the difference one person can make. Christ is alive and using this community for His desires. Christ rises in all of us each day. Praise God that He is alive and shedding His grace on our lives.
