Competition between members of the Chess Club was so fierce that it was one of the few organizations which met thrice a week. To take the prized “number one” spot, a member had to not only have the most total points, but also withstand the many challenges of other club members. Competition was not limited to club play, however, as many matches were scheduled against other high schools. Mar¬ shall’s players were undefeated through January, successfully trouncing Bishop Denis O ' Connell High School twice. In the Fifth An¬ nual Washington Baltimore Area Scholastic Chess Championship, our five-man representative team placed seventh out of the nearly twenty-five teams which entered. The Fischer - Spassky World Championship match is believed to have sparked area interest in chess. Many enthused new members joined the club, increasing the total number of participants to about forty-five, making it one of the larg¬ est organizations at Marshall.
