TRI-M Modern Music Master: VOT Vocational Office Training Our hard-won senior status has brought much of the glory we anticipated in those waiting years. Our float at Marshall ' s first Homecoming, the dances we organized, our co-sponsorship of the Powder Puff football game are concrete evidence of strong class spirit. An unusually large number of our group have made outstanding records in both the academic and athletic fields. This year has brought to us a new awareness of our past, our present and how they affect our future. 16 MARY SUSAN ABEGGLEN Sue SCA Rep I; Bernardine, props 3; “Diary of Anne Frank, props 4; GAA I, 2, 3; Pep Club 2, 3; AFS 4; Latin Club 2; Girls ' Chorus Sec. Hertzler Marshall, this year, could never have attained such success without the experienced advice and ef¬ forts of our principal, Mr. Elam K. Hertzler. Under¬ taking the challenge to continually strive for the development of the minds of the student body, he has strengthened the high standards and repu¬ tation of our school. Heading the administrative staff is Mr. T. Page Johnson, Assistant Principal for Administration. Mr. Johnson not only handles his administrative obliga¬ tions, but he also delivers informative lectures and gives meaningful direction to everyday school prob¬ lems. Filling the equally important position of the As¬ sistant Principal for Instruction, Mr. Clinton DeBusk guides the school ' s academic life and the faculty ' s teaching methods. In .addition to fulfilling various administrative responsibilities, he is responsible for keeping apace with the latest instructional tech¬ niques and directing student organizations. Aiding the two assistant principals is Col. Charles Baker, the Administrative Assistant. Performing a wide variety of duties, he is mainly responsible for attendance and the distribution of books. Completing the administrative team is Mr. Harold L. Hackney, the Director of Guidance. Ne w to Marshall this year, he is well qualified to handle the demands of the. Guidance Department. Mr. Hackney often gives students helpful advice on present problems and future expectations. 186 MR. T. PAGE JOHNSON MR. CLINTON DeBUSK COL. CHARLES R. BAKER MR. HAROLD HACKNEY 187 MR. TLUSTY indulges in his love of gardening as he feeds the carnivorous plants in his terrarium. IN QUIET moments, Mr. Harris reviews the records of the students assigned to him. Public Speaking, Journalism, and Creative Writing In the third year of operation, Marshall has ex¬ panded its curriculum to include new ideas in edu¬ cation. Courses are designed to provide training for the entire student body based upon present needs and future plans. Through the World Civiliza¬ tion and American Civilization courses, students have an opportunity to make parallel studies in his¬ tory, literature, philosophy and fine art. The mathematics courses offered this year em¬ body many of the new theories and techniques of modern learning in this field. Science moves for¬ ward changing and adjusting its content to meet the needs of the students enrolled. The English department has embarked upon a pro¬ gram of emphasis on writing and has held confer¬ ences with other departments to help standardize checking procedure. Marshall has one of the most inclusive vocational programs in this area, including a special course in vocational electronics for post-graduates. The busi¬ ness department makes a concerted effort to equip its students for their role in the working world. In physical education, young men and women experience the joys and rigors of physical training and development. Creative drive and esthetic enjoyment are not neglected here at Marshall, but are nurtured, and encouraged through music, drama and art. For the first time Senior Art has been scheduled. Then there is Home Economics where young ladies experiment with materials and ideas, both in the kitchen and sewing room. In the foreign language department, audio equip¬ ment proves to be an invaluable aid to both teach¬ ers and young linguists. Because each year brings new responsibilities, curriculum adjustments are made to cope with changing conditions. Marshall strives to meet this goal. 188 I LOUISE A.
