Front Row: Fred Samuelson, Don Schumacher, Bryan Smith, Richard Peterson, Gail Johnson, Richard Silverherg, and Dean Beck. The 1056 football season started out with great success by the Genoa Orioles. Under the leadership of Coach Marshall Joyce and Assistant Coach l.arry Fuerst the Orange and Black scampered to a 7-0 victory over Polk. The game was filled with frequent fumbles due to first game jitters. The team played very fine ball in the first half and cut Dwayne Bright, the speedy halfback loose for a long run to score the only touchdown of the game. Genoa came back on the field in the second half but they seemed to have lost all their fire on offense but held Polk to a standstill in the middle of the field for the remainder of the game. ln the second game of the season Genoa was trounced by Fullerton 47-7. The Warriors had the Genoa boys bettered in speed and experience. The home town boys gave the Warriors a good game in the first half but again they looked as if they gave up in the last half. Fullerton went on to win for our first defeat. Larry lllcNeff made the touchdown, with Richard Silverberg kicking the extra point. On October 5 we traveled to Newman Grove to absorb the second loss in a row by a score of 40-13 with Bryan Smith making 12 points and Silverberg kicking the extra point. The Genoa boys played a good game all the way and gave Smith plenty of help in scoring. On October 12 we were overrun by Silver Creek 37-13 for the first time in four years. This was a big set back to the team, but Silver Creek just had too much speed in Prodroza and Kiliarl for GCY10a'S inexperienced ball club. Smith made all 13 points of this game on short jaunts through the line. On October 19 we again played away from home. We journeyed to Osceola only to lose 21-6 with Smith just making it over for the touchdown. The first half was very thrilling, but it started to drizzel a little and that seemed to put the fire out for Genoa. This was the fourth loss in a row for the Genoa boys. On October 23 we played a rated team in St. Paul. During this game no one played up to his standards and let St. Paul romp 40-0. The whole team was tired of getting beat so bad, but what could they do against a team that had twice as much experience as they had? -13..

v . l f.i- On November 2 the Genoa team was thinking more of football for they gave Stromsburg a hard hitting game that they won't forget for some time, but still they gave us a whipping 18-6. Again Smith hit the middle of the line for a twelve yard gain and a touchdown. The last game of the season was played on the home town field. This was the second game that Genoa played heads up ball, but they were not able to get by Glark's strong defense and lost the seventh straight ball game of the year. This gave a total of one win and seven losses. The score of this game was 18-0 in favor of Clarks. Seven seniors played their last football game for their high school career, and all seven played a very good game. The seven seniors are Bryan Smith, Gail Johnson, Don Schumacher, Richard Silverberg, Fred Samuelson, Dean Beck, and Richard Peterson.
