Stromsburg and Clarks provided little opposition for the Genoa five as they fell before them by scores of 68-43 and 66-4l. Genoa rolled over St. Edward- for the 3rd straight time this season. Genoa was crowned Goldenrod Conference champs as they swept past Polk 66-42. Druce llasch played a good all-around game, scoring 12 points and gathering 25 re- bounds. liichard Dannelly played the best all-around game of his career by ripping the nets for 22 points while leading Genoa to a 98-54 victory over Cedar Rapids. Gene Whitlow and llruee llasch also scored in double figures by picking up 20 and lf! points respectively. Genoa finished one of the first unbeaten seasons in history by knocking off Newman Grove 75--62. Dave l'ilm and Dean Deck did a good job in reserve rolls for regulars lost via the foul route. Gene Whitlow and liichard Dannelly also played good all-around games. Genoa entered the district tournament at Clarkson and on the first night swept past Platt Center 77-20. llruce lla:-:ch scored 715 points which is one of the highest scoring performances by an individual Oriole. On the second night of play, Genoa moved past Cedar Rapids 65-52 for their 17th consecutive victory of the season. Genoa came home with the runner up trophy, the 3rd night they bowed to Clarkson 62-57 in the district finals. All-stater, llob Moore, proved to be too much for the Orioles by dropping in 29 points. Clever llill Shanahan and lanky llruce llasch led the attack for Genoa. Genoa's first team finished the season with a 17-l record. The secondteam compiled a R-fl record. The lettermen this year were Bill Shanahan, Druce llasch, Gene Whitlow, llichard Donnelly, llonnie lfricson, l.eroy Morris, llryan Smith, David lflm, Dean Deck, and Gail ,lohnson. Student Nlanager this year was liichard Anderson who did a very good job of shining the balls and taking care of the uniforms. Richard Dannelly and Gene Whitlow were elected honorary season captains of the l056 Oriole basketball team. ln the final Class C standings, Genoa was ranked as the number four team. Druce llasch re- ceived honorable mention on the all-state roster. Coach-Mr. Brovm, Gail Johnson, Ronnie Ericson, Gene Whitlow, Bruce Hasch, Bryan Smith, and Student Manager-Richard Anderson. BASKETBALL The Genoa Orioles enjoyed a very successful basketball season winning 17 of 18 games under the fine leadership of Coach Marvin Brown and Assistant Coach Larry Fuerst. Their only loss was to Clarkson, a high flying club from Eastern Nebraska. The Orioles finished first in the M. B. N. and Goldenrod Conferences, bringing the first M.B.N. crown to Genoa since 1946. Genoa opened the campaign with a 44--36 win over Albion. Bruce Hasch led the scoring with 12 points. A hustling reserve team came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the Albion reserves 30-28 with Duane Bright scoring 8 points. The Genoa Oroiles ended a long victory drought over Fullerton by whipping the Warriors 63-61 in their second game. Bill Shanahan pumped in 25 points to lead the victory. Bruce Hasch played a good defensivegarne and gathered 14 points. Genoa had little trouble downing Silver Greek 69-44 for their third win. Bruce Hasch scored 26 points as well as gathering 29 rebounds. Genoa reserves were nipped by'Silver Creek reserves by the score of 41-4-O. The St. Edward Beavers fell before the Orioles by a score of 64-38. Bruce llasch again led Genoa in the scoring department with 22 points. Genoa took home the first place trophy in the M. B. N. tournament held at Albion. Genoa had little trouble the first two nights sweeping past St. Edward and Newman Grove by scores of 64-19 and 69-45. Genoa met Fullerton in the finals and came out with a 50-45 victory. All hands turned in good performances, with Gene Whitlow leading the scor- ing with 12 points. Genoa squeaked passed Osceola 55-53 for its eighth consecutive win. Ronnie Ericson's jump shot from the free throw line won the game for the Orioles. Bill Shanahan was the leading point producer gathering 18 points. Genoa came through with an important conference victory by slamming St. Paul 77-55. Gene Whitlow and Richard Dannelly led the Oriole attack.
