FOOTBALL The 1955 football season was enjoyed with relative success by the Genoa Orioles. lln- der the leadership of Coach Marvin Brown and Assistant Coach liarry Fuerst the Orioles finished in second place in the Goldenrod Conference, behind Osceola. Genoa opened the season with a 13-6 victory over St. Paul. The game was marked with frequent fumbles due to first game jitters. The team performed with uncertainty from time to time. The score was knotted 6-6 at the end of the first half. Bruce llasch and Bill Shanahan scored touchdowns with Gene Whitlow adding an extra point on a short pass. Jerome Swanson played an out- standing game at guard for which he received the coveted star of the week award. For their second game the Orioles journeyed to Polk to do battle with the Bulldogs. ln the third game of the season, Genoa, minus the services of Quarterback Hasch, was dropped by Fullerton 27-6. The Warrior squad had good depth and speed, and was led by Clyde Haskins, a great performer, who later madethe Omaha World-Herald Class B All-State team. Bill Shanahan and Dana Dannelly played an outstanding game defensively with Bill receiving the Star of the Week award. Genoa caged the Newman Grove Bluejays 25-6 at Genoa. At halftime the score read 6-0 in favor of Genoa. The Orioles came to life though, in the second half, and scored '19 points. Bruce Hasch'scored three times, Bryan Smith once, plus an extra point. Bruce Hasch led the Orioles offensive attack. Ronnie Ericson sparked the defensive platoon. Hon- nie was awarded the Star of the week plaque for his inspiring play. The Orioles blasted Silver Creek 40-O to raise their conference standing to 4 wins and no losses. The scoring was as follows: Shanahan - three touchdowns, Hasch - one touch- down, Baue - one touchdown, and Smith - one touchdown. The team as a whole was out- standing defensively, with the entire squad seeing action. Coach Brown instructed Shanahan to attempt the points after touchdowns by kicking. Bill did and connected with four. At the end of their sixth game, the Orioles found themselves on the short end of a 39-19 score. Osceola had a good team with an excess of speed led by .Ian Grossnicklauswho com- manded the game with consistent broken-field running. Genoa didn't have the speed to cope with Osceola's backs. Bill Shanahan scored two touchdowns ani Bryan Smith one. The defeat knocked Genoa out of contention for the Goldenrod Conference Championship. Seeking revenge for the setback suffered to Osceola, the Orioles skinned the St. Edward Beavers 44--13. Bill Shanahan scored twenty points, Bruce Hasch eighteen points, and Bryan Smith six points. The team played a fine game, with the entire squad seeing action. Genoa got sweet revenge for last year's 13-12 loss to Stromsburg, by whipping The Vikings 35-6. Genoa got first blood when Hasch returneaa punt 76 yards for the game's first touchdown. Bill Shanahan added four touchdowns and five extra points to bring his seasons total to 115 points. Gene Whitlow played his best game of the season, and Richard Dannelly was outstanding at defensive tackle. Eleven seniors, Bill Shanahan, Gene Whitlow, Bruce Hasch, Richard Dannelly, Bob Chil- ders, Leon Noble, Gary Baue, Leroy Morris, Dana-Dannelly, Jerome Swanson, and Ronnie Ericson played their last football game for Genoa High, and overran Clarks 20-0. On the game's first play from scrimmage, Gary Baue ran 67 yards for Genoa's first touchdown. One of the highlights of the game was Richard Dannelly's line plunging at fullback. Bill Shanahan added 14 points to bring his seasons total to 129 points, third highest in the State of Nebraska. The team should be congratulated for their fine work during the season and their loyal ser- vice to the school and the coaches. -20. l
