Success came to the reserves six times after the holidays. The season was over, but the air never had a chance to clear before tournament time. Genoa edged Central City 51-44 in the first game, only to fall before a seemingly unbeatable Loup City five, 75- 50. The lettermen this year were Hasch, Whitlow, Shanahan, Smith, Doe, Major, Dan- nelly, and Ericson. Coach Brown and his assistant coach Harold Sohrweid, along with students and fans, can be proud of the 1954-1955 Orioles' basketball teams, the Goldenrod Co- Champions of 1955. W We Basketball 32 , Fil BACK ROW: Donn Major, Gene Whitlow, Coach Marvin Brown, Bruce Hasch, Ronnie Ericson, Richard Dannelly. FRONT ROW: Bryan Smith, Mike Peterson, Gale Christensen, Bill Shanahan, Phil Doe, Le- roy Morris. The Orioles' 1954- 1955 basketball season was very successful. The varsity had an 11-5 won and lost record, with the reserve team turning in a good 8-4 won and lost record. The season began with a three point loss to Albion on the home court. The reser- ves showed promise in winning their game 40-38. St. Edward became the first victim by six points. The next game, a big one, was dropped to Fullerton in a suspenseful last quarter 65-70. The Orioles rolled over Silver Creek with a 91- 44 blasting. This concluded the 54 part of the season with a2- 2balance for the varsity. After Christ- mas the M-B-N tnumament saw Genoa finish in second place. After a bye in the first round the Orioles dumped a previously victorious Albion quintet 55-53. In the championship game they fell by five points to a hustlirg Fullerton aggregation. They then traveled to Osceola and returned with a solid Goldenrod Conference win by a 79-59 margin. Lady Luck played against the Orioles in a 60 -61 overtime decision to St. Paul. This freak ball game cost the Orioles a clear- cut Goldenrod Championshipg a bitter reminder of the Stromsburg football fiasco. Revenge came sweet in a 46-43 victory over Stromsburg. The rest of the season proved to be a list of unworthy foes as the Orioles swept by Clarks, St. Edward, Polk, Cedar Rapids, and Newman Grove. -23-
